Women and Virtual Reality

I wonder if facebook is working on attracting the social media fans, which are often women too?

Hi!! Yes I play Elite in VR … and a bunch of other stuff as well!

I actually sold my 4k though and am using a Rift until my 8k arrives

I really enjoy playing Skyrim, and I really enjoyed the Gallery games that are on Steam. I mostly like RPGs/Adventures though. VR has the potential to take these games to a whole new level

Yeah while Vive has the better tracking. For sde & such imho the rift cv1 is better. Vive reminds me of rift dk2 (too much like an 80s TV) lol

My wife enjoys VR though not nearly as much as me. After installing the beat saber mod for custom songs and the minecraft mod her interest in VR peaked. She also very much enjoyed Moss and Job Simulator. It would seem that she enjoys using more as a relaxing getaway rather than running and gunning/high speed car chases. I’ve recently started explaining the tech that makes it all work to her and that also helped with the interest.

Lately she has been playing The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. The exploration aspect is what gets her to play. I know for a fact if a VR exploration game with puzzles scattered around the world came out I’d never get to play. Lol

While it’s not a VR game, there’s a good chance she’d like ā€œLife is Strangeā€. The first episode is free on Steam. I found it to be a very emotionally moving game, quite unlike what I usually play. If it was ever released as a VR game, I’d buy it again.

We both sat down and played through the first episode of that and both walking dead games. Thanks for the suggestion though!

She might like Nature’s Trek

That looks pretty cool. I think I’ll add it to my game wish list.

Also non vr but try ā€žthe cat ladyā€œ it may look very strange and basic at first. Iā€˜m a adventure junkie since zack mc cracken on my c64 and larry 1 on atari st. The cat lady has one of the greatest stories most touching, best voice over and itā€˜s very dramatic. You get woman in with drama for sure. Itā€˜s just 2-5 bucks by an independent dev on steam or gamekeyfinder. If you give it a change you will see it is incredibly good. a friend actually had to persuade me at first because i was sceptical by the first look but the style is matching the story perfectly.

btw. if you consider playing the following walking dead episodes…don’t. The first two were decent but then it gets downhill big time.

The main reasons we don’t see many women here or on sites like home theater sites, computer component review sites, etc. is this: Big Five personality traits - Wikipedia

I played Life is Strange a couple of weeks ago, after having bought it a year ago or so.
Really different - and really great ! That is, if you occasionally care about anything else in games than killing & destroying.
It’s the kind of game I will still remember in 20 years.

Another one I am looking forward to play is Firewatch - and that even appears to have a VR mod created by some bloke (https://www.reddit.com/r/Firewatch/comments/7tuilz/firewatch_native_vr_working/)

@rconstantine There is nothing there that says women have, or have not certain qualities. What exactly are you trying to say with the wikipedia-link?

@Loribee Do you know of more female VR enthousiasts? And follow up. Do you think there is a pathway to make women more involved into VR? To make VR more interesting in such a way, they also feel attracted to participate in the world of VR?

I don’t, but I would say that there are a lot more women in technology in the area that I live and work, so would me more open to trying it out.

A lot of the experiences seem to be tailored around a more male subject matter (shooting/driving cars/flying) and to be honest, I would rather spend my time in VR doing other things. I think the same applies to gaming in general. I think it used to apply to technology in the past, but less so these days due to things like smartphones and fitness trackers and smartwatches

Thanks. Would interest go out to things like this: http://vrhealth.institute ?
(because you name smartphones, trackers and smartwatches)

I read this article a while ago and it raises some interesting potential reasons
Is the Oculus Rift sexist?. Basically, the theory is that women perceive depth primarily through the shading and lighting, and therefore need the graphics to be top notch in order to be impressed with VR, while men primarily perceive depth through parallax, which VR does just fine with right now. So maybe women will be more impressed with VR in the future when graphics get better? I think there are other reasons as well, though… my wife can have fun in VR with games like fruit ninja and beat saber, but most of the time she’d just rather be doing other things.
