What Pimax news from CES?

Thrill on Twitter : “The 35PPD lens on Chrystal was awesome. I could see this being my next headset if software is good.”

High praise indeed, but yeh he also has some issues.

I’ve put my name forward for the Crystal testing too. Bet it’ll be quite popular application wise. The post on here says they want 15 people but iirc the google form it links to says 30 people.

without evaluation, just some reading material

It originally said 30 people before, so I’m guessing the more recent announcement is accurate. Maybe the other 15 would be testers in China? Would make sense.

So if they are only now starting a “testing group” then the whole shipping right after ces statement was a flat out lie…

Same over here,we had almost every vr headset so a good comparison for what can be fixed so we could inform them… i want them too succeed with the crystal and the 12k.

Good for both of you…

Tbf, they said the testing group would be people included in the first batch of shipments. So I don’t think it was a lie but the date has definitely been pushed back.

So their idea is to ship and THEN ask those folks to test?

Sounds like the small group of volunteer unpaid testers having the ear of the developers might want to keep mum about their position, or they could find themselves inundated with reports from the user base at large, serving as unpaid QA managers as well…

I’m ok with the beta testing idea. Pimax mentioned this some time ago, and I do find it odd that it’s running concurrently with the first actual shipments. However, it may be more about tweaking firmware and software than completing hardware. Regardless, it’s a far better idea than letting every buyer in the first year be unwitting and unwilling beta testers. I’d prefer to see the testing earlier and on a larger scale, but this is actually a step in the right direction.

The right direction would have been after CES 2022 and before several launch date misses.

This is not a new idea for Pimax. They asked backers here to submit who they felt would be good beta testers for the org KS and the assembled group included several YT VR influencers The resulting unwillingness to greenllght the project led to a delay and a much better hmd that could be retailed. and an eventual job for the most thorough tester I have seen -Sweviver.

I would also like to test the crystal. Even as an owner of a low end system.

You’re not wrong Dogbite, but since this is where we are now, and since I want Pimax to bring a completed HMD to market, the beta is still a step in the right direction.
Belated, yes. But also vital, imho.

That’s really good news about the tracking.

Yes, why are you surprised? /s

Forget the whole launch crap Pimax are repeating, the real product is still moths away from launching. Standalone, which is a main, and may I add quite expensive feature of the Crystal, has not been demoed even once, let alone been shown to work well & reliable. The weird stereo convergence/overlap issue was seen by Thrill too, as I also experienced it during my demo at MRTV‘s place. Probably won‘t be corrected, as I had a similar issue with the Vision series too and it persisted on those too.

Further specs to be verified:
DFR capability of the eye-tracking (so far only auto IPD confirmed)
MR face plate & capabilities
Wireless
Controller battery usage (so far only general suitability for gaming confirmed by Brad Lynch)

These are some important yet still not demonstrated and thus probably not yet satisfactorily implemented features which justify the enormous price tag (don‘t forget that the different face plates are to be paid on top of the Crystal‘s known price!).

By the way, Brad Lynch tried the Crystal again, now with Lighthouse tracking, and seems to like the package a bit more now - and to all of you who criticized him for his earlier comments, he just measured it to the benchmark of a final product because Pimax presented it as such to the world, and I said at the time that I felt that his comments were pretty spot on if you looked past his pubic hair & replaceable lenses rant. Cas & Chary also seemed to habe liked the Crystal. So Pimax seem to be making progress here; if they‘d just stop pretending that the product is about to ship and call it what it is: a development well on its way but not there yet, with the latest prototypes/pre-production units being sent to beta tester in a month or two, meaning you can hope for the product to be released in Q2/3 if everything goes according to plan.

i read on discord it was “nearly 5 hours” and “4hours 44 minutes”, i think this was from Kevin so it needs corroboration. No-one who has recently commented on the controllers has complained about the battery life afaik.

Correction edit : Kevin said 5 hours, another discord user who was at CES said 4 hours 44 minutes so it looks like this is probably accurate.

I wonder if Cas saw the 12k and that’s what she is referring to? Or maybe the MR faceplate? I really hope it’s not another new headset lol.

That’s what I thought. Wait until all the Crystal stuff is out the way then drop the 12k prototype at the end.

Pimax really need to be clear on the 12k. If it’s over 6 months away they really need to say it. Instead of making people believe it’s close to the Crystal.

Pimax still lacks direction.
