Twack3rs Varjo VR-3 impressions

Hello there, its indeed what i read on discord…(and on some flightsim forum)

Dont get me wrong i still want to try the device…

But in the beginning it was al wow…

But now i read,i:miss the field off view, the distortion is bad,its heavy, and the performance is not that great…

But i still i hope i can try it someday to see it for myself and see if indeed there a big framedips ingame vs my other headsets then maybe i shouldnt buy it.

But i also know that the varjo vr3 wasnt meant for gaming so i need to keep that in mind.

It’s not out of the question the bandwidth issue could be mitigated somewhat with foveated transport.

Anyway: We should have had optical ports directly on the graphics cards by now, IMHO. :9

I just read upon discord, EVERYBODY disagrees with you there and say it’s weird you posted that ‘conclusion’ here since it has not much to do with what’s being said on discord, where people actually really like the VR3. You actually seem to have managed to piss off the whole VR3 discord because your comment is really far from the truth.

I think it comes down to this though: I’d be HIGHLY surprised if you wanted to go back to another headset after having tried the VR3. It’s just a (much) better headset than anything out there. Maybe you’d feel you’d HAVE to go back if you can’t miss the money. I mean the real question in my opinion wouldn’t be if you’d want to go back to another headset (you won’t). But the question is, is it worth the hefty price tag. And that answer is really highly individual and can’t be answered by anyone but you.

You know I respect you a lot @john2910 but your comment here really has NOTHING to do with what’s being said on discord, not sure why you felt the need to post such comment here. And I strongly disagree with Sebastian’s VR3 review being ‘hype’. The VR3 delivers. And no, it’s still not perfect, there are still downsides. But regardless, it’s quite a step up from everything else out there.

I think perhaps those on discord might be being on edge needlessly. John maybe just reading what might be a minority there. But are people John feels might be similar to himself in terms of VR. He did also mention a flightsim forum.

Those whom are happy with there purchase shouldn’t be upset due to those whom might not be as happy.

People have different preferences and sensitivities to VR.

But there’s no such minority. Not even one person on the Varjo discord who doubts or regrets his VR3 purchase.

Don’t know about that forum. But just saying, his reference to discord is based on nothing but his imagination. Really not sure why he posts such comments here.

That’s really beside the point here. The point is that not even 1 person on Discord regrets or doubts his purchase. What people do say is that it’s not the holy grail, there are still downsides. It will take several years (and several GPU models) before we’ll hit the holy grail of VR anyway. But even with its downsides, it’s just much better than anything else out there at the moment and EVERYBODY on discord who owns a VR3 seems to agree. Hence that’s why people found John’s comment about ‘the hype is already ending’ so weird.

I read it as performance sucks on current gpu top hardware. And it could be way better if Varjo would support steamvr more. You said why go to 8kx before its above everything else, it has sharper image, but image quality not top priority for everybody and overall vr usage experience is, its why i stick to index with its outdated res even having vp2/8KX/g2 coz it delivers best overall experiance personally for me and despite VR3s crisp res and clearest clarity spot im 89% sure it will be inferior for me personally coz i wont be able to use it long, will have headaches due to distortion and atm performance will be low until they manage it properly with steamvr, which isnt their priority. Money not issue for me as having 25 hmds and 2 8kx is quite expensive hobby, but paying 4k+ for raw, not optimized heavy hmd with distortions for only crisp picture is above me. I believe its good for training, presentations and for ppl who race for every pixel, but overall score hmd wont be bigger than index (for me).
If they fix weight and utilize foveated rendering or at least only center sharp mode with good bending and performance will be 8kx level or better then it would be different story. But i afraid prosumers wont be their focus in foreseen future.

i also have dizzy issues with g2 i didnt notice it until i found elite dangerous works well in it, and i got motion sick in 4-5 hrs (I have 5years vr legs) I think it maybe linked with their micro stutters on head turns as g2 tracking is poor implemented. I have no motion sickness with index, 8kx (actually i have a bit but it doesnt disturb and its linked more with optics buts its bearable, weight of 8kx is more problematic). Nowadays motion sick in vr is rare case for me but g2 by some reason does it.

Thanks for the reply…yea that may be it exactly. Im running two 2.0 base stations and the tracking is soooo much better.

if you get sick in vr fast and like fps and roomscale, i would suggest byuing index as backup hmd and buy counter weight for it https://www.studioformcreative.com/product-page/index-200-gram-7oz-curved-counter-weight (this one is mandatory) + optionally buy apache strap for it https://www.studioformcreative.com/product-page/index-apache-strap + optionally face interface Valve Index Interface & Foam Replacement Basic Set default is fine but i highly recommend this one for improved comfort

its very cheap and as you have base stations and probably knuckles hmd will be only 500 bucks.

You will be pissed by resolution at first by its miles better than og vive and all old hmd including vp1

but its most motion sickness friendly hmd and with above kits you wont find anything more comfortable than index, so its best for fast paced games and long sessions.

You still can use varjo for sims, but myself i play sims in it as well.

Week ago my friend that always lacks resolution in vr sold his vp2 and kept index due to comfort, performance and lower god rays, but GR are stronger in index than in g2 though clarity spot is edge to edge, biggest vertical and 106 horizontal real fov. By current date its best overall cheap package on market with exceptional performance and 144hz display, this hmd doesnt reppel new comers from vr when they first time trying it. Q2 is also exceptional hmd but it sucks in pcvr.

Ginger chews off Amazon aren’t even 20 bucks and I’ve seen many people report they help quite a bit with motion sickness and nasua. A fan, either in your room pointed at you during play or on your neck, has also helped some people I know quite a bit on overcoming motion sickness. Could try those before springing for a much more expensive solution.

I must say this podcast from tonight i realy liked from mrtv…They talked about the varjo vr3 again. And they were talking about the things i stated here…
They talked about the distortion, comfort, and a small part about the performance in lone echo.

And no…this it not an attack on the varjo vr3,because it seems to have a amazing clarity…But these other things we must not forget because off the price they are asking for the varjo vr3.

So lets hope we get someday a vr headset that we can call VR2.0…But varjo has a a chance to be called Vr 2.0 if they work on their headsets…

I don’t think anybody forgot about the downsides. It’s heavy, it has more distortion than I’ve seen in any other headsets and the performance is maybe a bit lower than some other headsets. But the point is that you said it sounded like ‘the hype is already ending’. First of all I don’t think it’s a ‘hype’. It’s just the best out there at the moment. Maybe not even for everybody and I’m sure someone will end up selling his at some point. But the clarity, the (almost) total lack of mura and SDE, the 3d effect (which is better than in other headsets), the total lack of eye strain, the almost edge to edge sweetspot, the comfort (except the weight of course and still need to use the studioform creative strap!) just make this the best out there in my opinion. And I’ve only seen happy people in discord, eventhough we all know there are downsides.

Thx for the response @Djonko

You know i respect you also alot, and we have almost the same impressions when we get a new vr headset.
We both like vr alot and want the best and are very critical.

Maybe i over reacted when saying the hype is already ending… (sorry for that)
Maybe its because i wanted the varjo vr3 to be the holy grail wich it isnt…yet

Correct, it’s definitely not the holy grail. It’s again a good step in the right direction but we still have a way to go!

I have the studio form creative head strap & counter weight kits for both the G2 and VP3.

Djonko how do you have the creative form strap setup on the vr3? I did it the way the ine vr dude showed on his channel but i find that interferes with the front pressure pad and warping adjustment dials

Yea I was thinking about selling my G2 and going with the index or vp2 for the second rig…or even a quest 2.

Yeah it’s also just over those dials in my case, but I adjust them before putting the headset on.

BTW what headphones do you use? I bought the Sony WH-1000XM4 because I figured sound quality would be my number one concern, but actually I now kinda regret it, since this headset is also actually quite heavy, adding to the weight of the VR3. I don’t like earbuds, so will probably now research into some good quality but lightweight over the ear solution

So I weighted my stuff: My VR3 + studioform creative strap comes in at 1050 gram. My pimax 8kx + Vive DAS is around 880 gram, as is my VP2, so that’s actually not even that far apart. However that damn Sony headphone adds another 250 gram and that was probably just a bad idea.

I don’t like earbuds but going to try some now and see if I like that better for gaming. Cause honestly the VR3 + a 250 gram headphone is just about uncomfortably heavy.

If I feel brave enough I actually might try to remove the upper VR3 strap, as I don’t even use that for support anymore (I use the studioform strap). As the VR3 strap actually is quite heavy (the headset alone is only 558 gram), I wonder how much weight difference that would make.

I just ordered a quest 2 lol…see if I like that better than the G2 for backup headset…apparently there is a 120hz mode now and also beefed up wireless bandwidth too…

I dont like earbuds either…Sennheiser is my favorite headset brand…I own like 6 different pairs lol

Uggg…looks like these are 285g…hmmmm maybe ill just do earbuds lol
