Twack3rs Varjo VR-3 impressions

Hehe, I am not sure if you are aware, but this is a Pimax forum :sunglasses:

I am glad to hear that you are pleased with the Varjo, and have the ability to use it

I understand their sentiment, and the angle of approach in the phrasing shouldn’t matter to me - it really shouldn’t - it’s one of those pointless semantic bugbears, but it still puts a cheese grater to my eyeballs every time people formulate things in such a way that they talk about: “the performance” of a (non-standalone) HMD.

My HMD does not perform; My computer does.

The HMD and the application comprise the scope of the work load that my computer may or may not have the work force to perform satisfactorily well at fulfilling.

Indeed of which ppl were misunderstanding that pointing out some pics were out of focus as meaning it is better than the vr3 for clarity. Of which ppl even said that for clarity the vr3 hands down wins.

Passions often obscure and influence our perceptions what we think were reading and make unneeded presumptions.

In fairness he did say friday and they did indeed deliver by giving @BGAStories a temp credential while they sort out his main subscript.

So opposed to the hoops you had to go through to get yours resolved. He appears to be having a decent xp with support.

Well this is to be expected though it is even lower than the Index. However from what I read each iteration they have improved the FoV in small steps. So likely as with the warping. There working on perfecting things in stages.

I imagine by the vr5 or vr6 they might have a much larger FoV.

Even VRgineers iirc were having some issues with the Aspherical lenses.

This was something mentioned in the Nvidia"s paper on cascaded displays is increased weight. Plus Aspherical lenses and custom electronics takes time before getting things miniaturized. One of the reasons the Xtal weighs so much.

But am sure once they have things more perfected they will work on weight reduction and better balance.

Very much to be expected. Many here were like that back when the pimax 4k was the only high res hmd out there. And that was with considerable flaws.

The VR3 is no doubt a keeper. Mike from VROasis iirc said similar things about the vr2 which he bought for an amazing steal of iirc $500?

Yes it was made to look like that was what was happening when comparing pros and cons of each feature set. Which often happens when comparing different fruit.

Well this comes back to the pros of using aspherical lenses and having low mura quality screens. Will drastically improve visual clarity.

The bionic displays being not supported fully is to be expected. Even the extremely high costs to run them with focusing that much res in a tiny spot. Much like I presume StarVR dual inputs is not widely supported either.

Anytime a company has a lone cool feature it is harder to gain widespread support for it. On the plus with OpenXR this is becoming easier to have broader support baked in.

@PimaxVR and @PimaxQuorra need to look after pimax employee actions. As for sanctioning insults I think everyone needs to work on keeping themselves more inline to avoid devolving to that point in the first place.

Well Hopefully said individual realized and removed his “like” that he may have made in haste or bad judgement. You know how sensitive ppl can be. :beers::smirk::+1::sparkles:

Indeed if he had kept his part toned down to begin with it may have helped things from getting spun up.

Though you shouldn’t make presumptioms based on the actions of 1 person.

Yes you made the wrong presumptions over observations on a discussion.

That is because you were not here during the early days of this forum. This forum has always been open to discussing all things VR. Never just 1 company’s product(s). It is nice that were more back to our roots as it was complimented at one time as having the most VR duscussions in 2016/2017.

I think most don’t even bother, because:

  1. The context display already is extremely good. If you sit a few meter from your TV, can you really see the difference between good 1080p content and 4k? Most of the times honestly the difference is not that big (unless you move closer). To me, it feels like that. There is a difference, but it’s really not that big. If I focus on it, sure I can see the difference. But in games, not sure I’d notice.
  2. The focus display is actually quite a small window, most of the times you won’t even look through it anyway. In the Varjo demos I actually had to force myself looking through it.
  3. There’s also a disadvantage of the focus display and that is that once it’s active, you see a slight ‘shimmer’. It’s like some slight hue. It’s not 100% perfectly blended. That’s how we figured out it’s not active all the time, because you’ll notice it once it is. I guess that’s why Varjo decided to automatically turn it off when the resolution you’ve selected isn’t high enough to really take advantage.

To me, personally, I would have wanted the headset without the focus display. Most likely it would have made the headset considerably lighter and cheaper.

To me the VR3 clearly shows us that we’re now reaching resolution that’s already ‘really good’ and one could ask, do we need to push that much higher? Most people with a 4k-ish phone won’t even run their phone at that resolution, because the difference isn’t that big anyway. I feel we’re getting at that point.
Also the VR3 clearly shows that other factors are much more important: good lenses and ESPECIALLY panels with (next to) no mura are much more important than the resolution itself at this point.

You don’t need to do anything drastic. Just keep yourself level without presumptions of what you read.

There are many topics here that you can read about headsets that are open and very civil.

Indeed there was some misunderstandings due to passion. That even lead to a debate of language which I am sure you agree was ridiculous.

It was going reasonably well til people chose to fill in the blanks by presuming what was between the lines. Or making presumptions that lacked experiences.

If you mean ‚ridiculous good fun‘, then yeah!

Kidding, it was maybe somewhat pedantic.

Agreed, we can only hope

vr hmd + ecosystem, sotware, drivers optimization, reprojection implementation form a system that performs, and pc doesnt matter, with stronger pc it will be better but onbsame pc with equal settings and resolutions it varies quite significant - examples G2 awful, vp2 medium, index, vp1 very good,8kx better than vp2 but not so ideal as index/vp1 but still quite good, quests poor on pcvr
I have 3090 oc24 strix 5950x, 64gb of 3600 14 14 14 34 mem and i cant normally play g2 but can 8kx, index with highercres and settings get stutter free smooth image, if vendor cant provide good quality software/firmware - you cant use it with any kind of pc coz soft is bad quality

Yes that’s true. Several headsets just use the SteamVR renderer, whereas companies like pimax wrote their own renderer which gives much more freedom. That’s the whole reason we even have a render setting in the pimax headsets. You can decide if you like 1.0 or 1.25 or whatever better. Other headsets simply can’t offer that because they’re just using the SteamVR renderer which doesn’t expose any quality settings.

And Pimax went further than that, they gave the users more options to find their perfect trade-off between quality elements and performance, like the FFR settings.

The software used to be Pimax weak point, now it’s actually probably the best out there. I MUCH prefer the Pimax software over the Varjo base, especially since PE! I hope they paid @SweViver well because he really propelled Pimax.

i have a feeling that the hype that sebastian from mrtv started about the varjo vr-3 is already ending…
People are already missing the field off view, and dont like the distortion and the performance in games is not that great…

Maybe i am wrong, but this is what i see and read on the forums.
I am still in doubt if i must get a varjo vr3,but i have a feeling i would regret it…

Where did you read that @john2910?

He‘s on the discord.

I don’t get the impression that @john2910 is reporting and most users already had their HMD when MRTV posted his review.

But what does it matter? I‘m happy with the device I have, realistically that’s all that counts.

I think-from what’ve read so far- that the Varjo3 Is really going to be great for some folks. There is no disputing it’s appeal in terms of resolution and image quality. It’s too rich for my budget, but I hope Varjo keeps developing their line. Maybe the next version will be more gamer/sim oriented and in my price range. I am quite excited about what the near future will bring us. I think the next logical step for VR has to be greater bandwidth to the HMD. Isn’t there a new DIsplay port coming? What could Varjo do with that? Or Pimax for that matter.

Yes, DP2.0 is apparently launching by the end of 2021 and was delayed by the pandemic.

But it will require GPUs providing that interface. No idea if Lovelace and RDNA3 offer DP2.0.

I believe, we may need one channel per display, so even DP2.0 may need to be “paired”. I also believe it will go the optics pathway regarding being cable bound.
it´s obvious, higher resolution and higher FoV will require much higher bandwidth. 5G may perhaps even not be able to provide bandwidth in time for wireless at good quality.
I would love to try out Varjo 3, my company is one of the investors there.
But still in my opinion, the FoV ist crucial for immersion, too. Therefore I will wait for further versions, which at least equal to PIMAX 8KX. As I wear glasses, a solution to cope with that is mandatory for me, too. Maybe one should consider, because of the price selling points, this should be addressed, too. Because one need to have a certain amount of bucks here, regarding consumer level.
No need to repeat what already said here. I would like to see someone compares the Aircar demo on Varjo and 8KX. Hope, Pimax develop the true “Ready Player One” Headset in time, before Apple rumors come true.
