In all fairness, while now to date with the existence of the VR-3 the 8KX might have lost some luster, still undeniably that the 8K X does provide quite a very good image quality. Its sharpness isn’t that far off of the Reverb G2 and the Vive Pro 2. The wider FOV provide aspects than no other headset beside the StarVR, Xtal (Not a gaming HMD) If your criteria is mainly resolution, then indeed the VR 3 is the clear front runner.
Having said that, I think the 8KX is a fantastic unit. I would personally re-design the chassis, quit terrible and outdated design at this point. However, functionality is great.
There is another aspect to Pimax to consider. From all existing VR headset manufacturers, they are the most hands on when it comes to interacting with customers. The Pitool software was indeed ‘trash’ at it’s infancy days, and so was their warping shaders profiles. But, with plenty feedback and active will to improve the headset, over time Pitools is the best case of a tunable VR product. Quite good I have to say. They still need to add a “Saturation” option though
I don’t see why something suddenly not being the #1 king in some aspect suddenly makes it ‘old gen’ tech and talking as if it’s now so dated. I’d much sooner consider something like the Index’s resolution and sharpness as truly starting to feel like an older generation, its sharpness and pixel density has been surpassed by several headsets at this point to varying degrees, even speaking only the consumer sphere, more than countable on one hand I think? Same on hFoV even outside Pimax. That’s over 2 years old by now. The 8k X is barely older than one and still feels very close to the G2 and VP2, it’s consumer level contemporaries on image clarity. The latter just came out the last couple months.
Im sorry for some of the things I said…and I am sorry for calling pimax coo a crackhead…as im sure hes sorry for sanctioning me a pissant
We are all enthusiasts and things can get heated when a preferred brand gets slighted. Its exciting to see things really starting to move forward tech wise both with HMDs and gaming monitors.
Anyway off to do some testing of the VR3 and I will give my impressions
Honestly for such high end, business oriented headset you would expect some better service. I mailed and messages them and only after twacker helped me out in discord, I got their attention. And now reading how bga has problems that should be easy to solve but seems to be taking again way too long… That certainly seems something they should improve
They are still working on the credential issues, something in their system they need the have the engineers work on and the engineers are based in Helsinki…so could be another day to sort out. I was angry…well more like super pissed I won’t lie, but given the amount of complexities they are dealing with across the board from hardware to software…I am understanding…thankfully they set me up with some temporary credentials to use while they fix things.
I had to put the index controllers to charge, so limited on what I can test at the moment.
I just flew an F15 around Guam for a bit in MSFS2020…AMAZING! And after the session my eyes feel great and I don’t have any nausea like I was getting from the HP Reverb G2! WOWOWOW.
The sweet spot is utterly fantastic…it feels like the entire fov is a sweet spot! …Detail is super crisp, super sharp…excellent resolution and we are not even using the oled panel…WOW. This thing is absolutely wonderful for flight sims, distant land geometry looks great, aircraft spotting is super sharp…I’m very impressed.
Negatives so far:
FOV is defiantly lesser than the pimax, but I never tested a pimax so cant tell you how dramatically less…it feels on par with my G2.
Image warping as others have said. The amount of image warp is a direct correlation to how well the headset sits on your face and what content your looking at. Its very noticeable on the flat menu selection screen on MSFS2020…in contrast the G2 has near perfect geometry…so that is one of the great drawbacks of aspheric lenses, but we already knew that.
Its heavier than the G2 and probably not the headset I would want to use for high frantic movement games. Ill have to do some more testing.
Ill test project cars 2 tomorrow and see how this looks for racers…and I will play some FPS and see how that goes as well.
Long story short, its a keeper and I can’t go back to the G2. I can already tell you that much.
@Heliosurge Is it just me, or is it odd that so much energy is being expended in this thread over which HMD is better, when we cant even use the Varjo’s main selling point?
The Varjo has a retina level display that cannot be used, and its got that subscription model. The thing could be Christ incarnated as a VR HMD, and it would still not be great, cause we cant use the foveated screen.
So we’re all good with Pimax C level employees agreeing with having forum members insulted, right?
Just asking because the post where I pointed out and documented this completely unacceptable behavior has been deleted by ‚staff‘.
Now who could that be?
@BGAStories glad you toned it down a little, no point in throwing about insults and emotional attitudes. But yes, this entire forum is run by Pimax themselves so make sure to move discussion elsewhere at some point.
Yea I was gettin pretty worked up on why this apparent gang of pimmaxers were so adamant but now that I know this entire forum is run by pimaxx it just feels weird.
I mean why even allow discussion of competitors products if your C level staff is going to attack us in this manner because God forbid we rave about a competitors product.
You’ve never used an 8kx. All your opinions are based on hearsay.
You seem to have owned a lot of headsets without using many of them.
Good luck with your Varjo. I’ll be interested to see how it works out for you.
The forum is funded by pimax and the OpenMR store, but maintained and moderated by volunteers such as helio, me and other people (forum leaders)
We try to be as unbiased as possible, atleast IDGAS which viewmaster is the best.
I’m ready to move on as well. I think I did confuse you with another poster In the matter of calling the Pimax trash.
And I apologize for calling you the ‘p’word.
I’ll look for your reaction to the Varjo3 with interest.
I do love my Pimax but I’m not a fanboi-which is another term I find a bit insulting as it implies a wilful disregard fro critical thought.
However, as you pointed out, VR is a passion, and sometimes that sparks strong reactions.
Anyhow, roll on with your Varjo. Glad you got the subscription issue worked out.
Thx for the short inpression.
Can you tell us about the performance.
Compared to the hp reverb g2 and pimax 8kx it seems to have a alot off drop frames ingame… so you get thise annoying stutters sometimes. Still on the fence to get a varjo vr3 but not if my games run worse…
Indeed… and real custom oled panels for inky blacks and not that washed out lcd blacks…
And for me personal a real high quality audio solution(mic and headphones)
I must say i think the resolution is enough now with the varjp vr3…But its lacking all those other things still
