Twack3rs Varjo VR-3 impressions

I would have thought so as well.

I’m not sure how grammatically correct his use of profanity was but it seemed to me that he was impressed.

I am confused now :confused::sweat_smile:

Just watched some pieces of the video. In general I think Sebastian overreacts. He was super excited about the G2, I then bought it and it ended up gathering dust, mostly though because the hardware was so buggy, but also because of the super small FoV. He was also super hyped about the VP2, I also bought it, really wanted to love it (again) but in the end, the glare is just too bad. I’m going to sell it for sure. And his reaction in this vid, hmm, I don’t really share it. The resolution is just incredible, that I agree. But for example the build qualtiy of the headstrap isn’t too good at all, the top mechanism broke quickly and it feels like the whole strap might actually break. It’s flimsy. No audio is a big downside. Distortion, Sebastian mentioned it briefly but to me it’s quite bad. The blacks are not overwhelmingly good for a OLED headset (the VP1 has better blacks). The whole headset feels quite heavy, causing some wobble due to inertia even though the weight is very well balanced. And the FoV is NOT up to Index at all for me, will still need to measure it but it feels more like VP2.

Don’t get me wrong, this thing will still be my default headset, just because the resolution is so frikking good (haha I get the swearing, I feel like that too when describing the resolution, it’s insane). But there surely are several downsides here that personally I hadn’t expected in this device. If I see sebastians’ reaction, he makes it sound like this is the headset we’ve all been dreaming about. To me it’s not. It’s a good step forward again to that dream headset but there’s still a way to go.

Can’t argue with any of that. In his recent public video linked below he asked how much people would be willing to pay for a consumer version. A lot seem happy to pay around Ā£2k and obviously no annual subscription. Their previous vr-2 headset was around Ā£6k I believe without subscription so the subscription just seems to be a new way for business sales to operate.
You and I both chose to pay far too much for what is not a consumer device yet.
Will be interesting to see how Varjo respond to Sebastian’s video as they explicitly told him not to promote it’s use for games.
Though I think Varjo are happy for a small minority of extreme enthusiasts to test their product in a gaming environment at our own expense. They know themselves that some changes will need to be made before it is ready for the wider gaming public.
In meantime, you and I along with a few others get a taste of the future. Have you joined the discord yet as Varjo are watching it and we can help shape the possible consumer launch.

After adding a top strap and counterweights to the headset, I was able to get it much more comfortable and in the distortion sweetspot. And I must say I’m really enjoying this headset now. The picture is so clear, even in Pavlov the resolution is very enjoyable. Finally a VR experience comparable to gaming on PC.

No more annoying glare or godrays, no more small sweetspot, no more fresnel lenses. It’s a pleasure and also the colors are actually very rich. It’s the whole package

This the perfect gaming headset sebatian from mrtv says,so its not…

That you still need to tweak the device at this price is for me a no go…
And the blacks are not completly oled black…

For this price i take a pimax 8kx or a vive pro 2 wireless with the yaw vr 2 motion simulator…

Yaw2 motion simulator should be great fun. Do you think Vive Pro 2 wireless is the route to go?
My only concern is that the wigig wireless is very cpu intensive and yaw2 is all about simulation games which are also CPU intensive.

I feel as though perfect physical comfort might always require a certain level of modding as physiognomy differs so greatly between individuals.

But agreed, it explicitly isn’t a gamer Headset so it cannot be the best game headset.

Once you have gotten so deep into the sim racing abyss that you cross into 5 digit setups, I personally wouldn’t want to have anything less for my optical experience.

I might get a Focus 3 for roomscale though, itā€˜s just a shame it doesn’t allow for lighthouse tracking.

Finally I also finished my review. Unfortunately the test was expensive. I hope my own VR3 is on its way soon, since I have to send the XR3 back tomorrow

i think this will be a great combo,or the quest wireless

yeah I added (almost?) the same strap, really makes it a much better advice, I agree there. But still, the distortion is substantially worse than the 8k-x for me. The 8k-X distortion is only at the edges of the lens but here I see it over the whole screen. It almost feels like they’re using a different distortion profile for the focus area. Which, if true, would indeed present extra difficulties fixing the distortion, but could probably be still be better optimized.

I certainly do agree there. The lenses are also insanely clear.

Actually, thinking about what I just said, I think it makes sense right, that they need to use a different algo, simply because the ppi differs. Obviously you can correct for that but maybe that’s not trivial to do? Either way I’m starting to get convinced that this is the main issue

Actually you can even see the distortion in sebastian’s video. If you look at his vid 2:33-2:39 and then look at the left (smaller) tower you clearly see the distortion, the whole image just isn’t geometrically stable. It’s not extremely bad of course but enough for my mind to tell me that ā€˜this is not real’, it just break immersion for me. The video actually shows pretty much what I see. Especially if you replay the video several times you will see it. It’s worse than 8k-x distortion and as you can clearly see, its not just at the edges of the lens. Also in HL:A at 8:43, left plants in the screen, same thing, it’s like some ā€˜wave’ is going through the image. I always notice this most when looking around. If you’re just looking ahead you might not even see it at all.

Sebastian made some videos for the 8kx showing the same. Not sure if he’s still planning to do that but since the effect on the VR3 obviously is much worse than the 8kx, it would not make him look very honest when he does spell it out for the 8kx but not even mentions it here.

This is something that maybe if there built in ET is capable to give ipd and pupil to lense depth that a dynamic distortion algo might be able to help solve. It is too bad pimax has yet to explore this as it was mentioned by Xunshu as an idea for the ET Dynamic Distortion correction.

But there ET might not be good enough(pimax) to meet the challenge.

They should have known better if they watched his channel. :beers::smirk::+1::sparkles:

So true :joy:…

Hmm very good notion! With eye tracking in theory they should be able to fix any distortion! They know the position of the iris relative to the lens so they can always dynamically correct for any lens distortion

From what I gather, improved distortion profiles is their current AAA priority.

Just go into the changelog of their sw from as recent as March 2021; the functionality they have added since is staggering.

Definitely miss nice good quality Changelogs. @PimaxQuorra please emphasize the importance to the team.
