(I’ve just merged the 2 topics)
The eye tracking module is coming from a third party vendor called 7invensun, which already has an eye tracking unit for the Vive. The idea that you can upgrade your headset later does not change my conclusion of the basic headset. When the accessories are available, I’ll evaluate them and possibly update my conclusion.
As a reviewer, I can’t rely on future promises to sway my opinion. I must rely solely on what’s available to me.
This is strangely worded in that it makes it sound like you scored more negatively because of the forum than you would have otherwise. There may be wisdom in rephrasing it.
All he says is that it’s just not as good as some people here make us believe. Nothing wrong with those words.
3/10?? LOOOOOOOOOL i dare someone to tell me it’s not a trash site or that they’re not being paid for this. 3/10 uno. When 3 (non bribed) testers say it’s the best headset right now and that they love it, you just know there’s something fishy going on here.
1- first off, how can “the best visual i’ve seen in vr” get a 3/10 rating? he didn’t even mention distortion or anything that ruined the experience OTHER than performance.
2-Speaking of performance, how is it pimax’s fault that their headsets require beefy as hell pcs? If you want high end vr with wide fov and high res, then get a top pc or get out.
3- Tom’s HARDWARE, a hardware reviewing company doesn’t have a 2080 ti because “it’s too expensive”…WHAT? This has to be a joke man, it has to be…Not to mention they were bribed by some company (honestly don’t remember the controversy exactly) but they made a review for the 20xx series saying “just buy it”. How can you even say that when YOU YOURSELF don’t buy it?
4-The headset is clunky/headstrap isn’t good enough. Yeah let’s just add this tiny tiny con and put it in there to downplay the headset. Even though pimax are making a superior psvr style audio strap. Clutching at straws. Absolute joke that i’m gonna just ignore. Even r/vive are bashing on this stupid ass review https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/9k9nux/pimax_5k_m2_preproduction_headset_eating_gpus_for/
“As a reviewer, I can’t rely on future promises to sway my opinion. I must rely solely on what’s available to me”
then why talk about varifocal and eye tracking in future headsets? just curious
As stated above multiple times, there is a problem on the UK website (which we weren’t aware of until this weekend). The real rating is 6/10, which shows up on the US website as 3/5
As for the M1, I’m not sure how much I can share because the M1 NDA is still in effect (likely forever), but suffice to say that I don’t have an M1 anymore and I haven’t for about two months. I did not get to experience some of the major advancements with software through the summer.
My M2 5K+ arrived four days after the embargo for reviews lifted. The website editors wanted the review up quick, so it was a somewhat rushed job, which meant less time for testing games - hence just 5 titles.
The card is still here though, and It’s not going back. I bought it.
“Wehn you look at his PiTool & SteamVR SS settings, you can see that these are what Sweviver warned to not use.”
in what way? I left PiTool at 1x. Lower settings negatively affect the image quality, which is kinda the point of this headset. Lowering the setting to .75x drops the image clarity below the quality of the Windows MR and Vive Pro headsets.
SteamVR automatically assesses your hardware and recommends a value. I used those values as a test, which it turns out didn’t even net the performance necessary to drive the display without reprojection. I’m of the opinion that you should always strive to avoid any form of reprojection. It should be there as a safety net in case you run into poor framerates occasionally.
The 100% SteamVR value was used to give an idea of how far of the mark the 2080 really is from driving the true experience that Pimax offers.
Keep in mind, I wasn’t even using the full FOV in those tests. Full FOV demands a hell of a lot more from the GPU.
no i understand that, and thats fine, but when he says ‘I wanted to temper expectations’ it makes it sound like he is marking lower to get peoples heads out of the clouds. if he said ’ i wanted to give a realistic assessment’ then i sounds like he is giving it an impartial final score.
Maybe im being pedantic i just dont want people to take him up wrong way.
Oke other testers think clearly different about it. We just will see in the near future. Hyped in this forum? Huh don’t you see how critical people are? even that one sometimes think overly critical and in great detail, there is nothing hyped here.
I lost a lot of respect for the, stating the obvious as a con, requires a high end pc? No shit… And why a 2080, that itself is expensive, really though why don’t they have a ti?
I’m also a backer, but I don’t let the fact that I bought it sway my opinion.
I purchased the headset so that I could review it. I have many VR headsets at my disposal, so I’m not coming at this from a perspective that I need it to live up to expectations.
Having early access to be one of the first reviewers was my primary reason for purchasing it.
That’s entirely possible.
I have asked TH for an updated test rig (this one is over 4 years old) but I have not gotten approval for new hardware.
I bought the 2080 with my own money because the 980Ti that I have for the test rig isn’t up to the task.
Sounds like your boss is an asshole
Hi Kevin,
I must say I am pretty surprised about 6/10. Especially when comparing the device to the Vive Pro which is according to your review the best VR headset on the market.
Yes, it does need a fast computer, but with my 1080ti I can run all the games I want to. And for me, comparing the 5K Plus directly with the Vive Pro, the advantages of the 5K Plus are just so obvious to me.
I had one of the most influential tech writers in Germany over to try the Pimax headsets. His name is Dennis Ziesecke. After 2 hours, I gave him the Vive Pro to try, and this was his reaction:
And that pretty much also reflects my sentiment when trying any of the current gen headsets now.
Yes, the Pimax headsets still have flaws, but the pros outweigh the cons by a large margin. Well, at least in my opinion. But I also understand that people have different perceptions and of course your opinion is just as valid as mine.
Just wanted to express my surprise. The upcoming MRTV written review will definitely score the devices higher than 6/10.
Sincerely, Sebastian
It does feel fragile. It absolutely won’t take a beating.
The plastic is thin and flexible. The fit and finish is poor (probably because it’s a pre-production unit, which I acknowledged).
Like without reading. Because you know, Pimax YEEEHAAAAAAWWWW FTW!
OUR Pimax.
Edit. I guess it’s hard to know if that was sarcasm or not
Give me a link & will though it seems many missed that the site was not accurate in rating.
So, what in your opinion makes the Pimax headset a second generation device?
Second gen should bring something new to the table. The Pimax headset doesn’t.
ultra-wide FOV isn’t new for VR. StarVR had a working 5K headset before the Vive hit the retail market. Yes, I realize the StarVR headset was never meant for the consumer market, but the technology existed years ago.
I’ve made my case multiple times. I’ve yet to see anyone properly justify the term “second-gen” in relation to the Pimax headset.
“You can’t compare a soon to be released headset with a future prototype, specially if Oculus himself says that if you want varifocal and eye tracking and wide fov and 4k per eye you are set to wait for 2022.”
sure you can. Oculus hasn’t said when it would release a device with varifocal displays. It could very well be next year that we see those devices surface.
Oculus said that a headset with all those features is likely a few years away, yes, but there’s no reason some of that stuff won’t be introduced with the next iteration.
4K per eye is ahead of its time. The performance tests back that up.
eye tracking tech is not where it needs to be for Oculus to buy in - what makes you think Pimax’s partner can do better than Tobii Tech can for Oculus?
Pimax has a lot to prove still. I’m not saying they won’t pull it off, but my review was based on the current state of things.
@reter29 he wants to give it a good beating
