Damn looks like ill be getting the 2080Ti . I was really hoping to skip this gen of gpus to to teach nvidia a lesson on overpricing. but…
Good post but someone already posted a thread on it.
I will leave it as often these get buried. But good to see tech results with a more standardized test methodology.
Good review although I find the conclusion to be somewhat…odd. The reviewer concludes that he doesn’t find it to be better than the Vive Pro despite offering the “best visuals he’s ever seen in VR”. He mentions it not having an adjustable head strap and integrated headphones as a reason for this conclusion. I just can’t help but feel that he avoided putting it above the Vive Pro because of “reasons”. I would assume that he knows the adjustable head strap and integrated headphones are coming but I don’t think it would have changed his conclusion either way.
You have to consider the retail release vs our kickstarter model. As backers were getting a lot of goodies like Audio Headmount. If the headset is released how Kevin & Oscar received it as a basic sku it is worth mentioning this as a “con”.
Since Sony lead the way with a humanized Head mount this improvement becomes expected in gen2 along with included removeable audio. If pimax had been able to neet their original release date these reviews would be more positive in areas like that.
But in recent months othee companies have broaden what folks are looking for; in the same wat folks are now looking for modularity in headsets as well.
Yeah, when put in comparison with the YouTubers his review is some kind of a heavy outlier. He had some hard work to write it down, even the benchmarks look a little odd. We will see in a few weeks if Mr. Carbotte is someone worth reading, it wasn’t yet for me, I doubt it’s gonna change, his approach to review headsets is kind a dumb, writing about several lacks in premium segment and irrelevant wide FoV without actually showing us pictures about what he tries to describe, note that video is kind a more common today to proof a point of you really have one…
Keep in mind Oscar mentioned there is a bug that in the fps tool that the youtubers have used in reporting fps. Fcat is a known respected tool. Where as the other one is new.
@Pumcy I read your review on TH and was a bit surprised by low numbers even for RTX 2080 (which should roughly equal GTX 1080 Ti as far as I understood from cards benchmarks). Do you think that your CPU/RAM might be a bottleneck?
Second question, in the charts you show “Delivered FPS” and “Unconstrained FPS”, what is the difference, or in other words, what is “constraining” the delivered FPS?
Finally, do you plan to share more details about the FCAT files, e.g. how much time the rendering of the scene takes, how long it takes to do pre-lens warp, etc.?
Have the link for that?
About unconstrained FPS: my guess is that they remove the cap at 90 FPS. Not sure how they do this while running the headset, as the drivers shouldn’t allow it. What they should do instead is show the frame times.
Yes though according to oscar’s review it might be spmething in pimax’s framework.
Here is the articke
Oh I agree completely that it is fair to list it as a con. I just don’t agree that it should be weighted enough above the actual headset’s visual abilities to warrant declaring it a lesser headset than the Vive Pro. It is just a single person’s opinion though so no big deal, I just found it to be a very odd one.
It as they say though it adds contrast. I didn’t interpet it as being lesser than bthe Vive pro if I have the passage your refering right.
Like the Vive Pro it feels more like vr 1.5 vs 2.0.
I think if they had bern able to release much earlier in 2018 it would have had a stronger v2.0 feel. But with the Vive Pro & StarVR & pimax themselves the bar has been raised in what folks will expect inna full v2.0 offerings.
Yeah I was referring to that line in combination with the below quote:
It’s going to take more than a couple of high-resolution panels slapped into an ultra-wide headset to knock the HTC Vive Pro off the top of our Best VR Headsets list.
Whether they think of it as 1.5 or 2.0 doesn’t matter to me either way. It is the notion that they wouldn’t rank it over the Vive Pro which feels strange to me. I get that it takes more power to drive it, but I would think that the greater immersion, which is what VR is all about, would be worth that trade off when trying to name something the Best VR Headset.
Keep in mind Kevin is not the author of the Best headsets.
See below
While i cant say i disagree with the end rating because its out of 5 . 7/10 may be better
he doesnt comment on pimaxes greates strength the expandabiility
Yeah, I really don’t understand why the framerate would be so far below the unconstrained framerate. Typically, the unconstrained framerate is the framerate that the GPU could render if it wasn’t constrained by the refresh rate. If the unconstrained framerate is so much higher than the refresh rate on some of those titles, it doesn’t make sense that the actual framerate would be so much below refresh rate.
Edit: After looking at it again, I think what’s happening is it’s going into reprojection when the framerate dips below 90, so the average framerate is pulled down because of spending time at 45 fps instead of 90. I think the reviewer needs to be more clear that this is what’s happening, because he says things like “We achieved a 55.73 fps average with the fancy new card, which still falls far short of the desired 90 fps”, but in reality, it could only be a few frames short of the required 90 and is going to 45. It looks like we’re going to have to do a lot of tweaking with the steamvr and pimax SS values, but based on the unconstrained framerate, it doesn’t look like we’re far away from the full 90 with a powerful enough card.
I think this must be an error. Yesterday it showed 3/5 indeed, which seems more in line with the review itself.
EDIT ah it already shows 3/5 again
I still see 3/5, where are you guys seeing 3/10?
Ah, it’s the UK link that shows 3/10: https://www.tomshardware.co.uk/pimax-5k-m2-headset-vr,review-34565.html
That seems to be an error.
not that sueprising considering mrtv saidhe felt 1080ti was barely cutting it
