STAR WARS: Squadrons Discussion

Hi! Have any of you tried to reduce the screen resolution on the mirror image? I’ve read on Reddit that one person did this and got better results. It doesn’t affect vr resolution, but free up some resources apparently. I’m at work and can’t test it.

I am still waiting to buy it.
After all I read the single player campaign is really pretty short and a bit “chaotic” cause of switching between the factions every mission…
And though I used to be a great X-Wing Alliance pilot in former times, I fear I’ll be only cannon fodder in multiplayer with all those pro’s.
Last but not least I read also that HOTAS support might be a bit buggy, some people on Steam mentioned playing with a gamepad would be superior - which is an absolute No-Go for me, regardless of VR.

I’ll wait for the first sale and then give it a try for a couple of hours via Steam and the possibility for refund in case of.

Just a bit disappointed because of the short single player campaign, anyway… I was hoping for some good old story-driven campaign lasting for 20-30 hours or so. But it seems those times are over … :sob:

Concerning the need for Parallel Projection:

Anyone already tried this:

??

It generally works with all PP-titles - as long as they don’t need any starting parameters to be transmitted.
Could be worth a try :slightly_smiling_face:

VR - Star Wars Squadrons - Great Game - Review - YouTube noobifier would agree.

gotta say with my 8kx a day away now the last thin I wanted to hear is that the index feels better than a 4k 170 fov head set.

maybe i should preorder the G2 just in case right?

EDIT: I will wait until i get the 8kx to find out.

Also Damn I love noobifiers setup

devs barely care about VR as it is, I dont have high hopes they would care about Pimax.

This is what I was thinking.

I tried this but Steam is being started every time. Tried the .exe and launcher.exe

Never done this trick before, am i doing something wrong? Got Oculus Home installed

Edit: Now i get the steam api error…

I tried, it doesn’t work

Got back and seen there’s a patch. Unfortunately this seems to introduce a major now issue, it breaks Smart Smoothing. Anyone else had this?

  1. Pre-patch I didn’t encounter this, but now instead of a fixed 37/38 with SS on, the game routinely (sometimes mid-game) starts hitting about 42-43 and stutters significantly, suggesting SS is no longer working. Loss of smoothness feels horrible and ruins accuracy. It can happen in SP or MP, story or battle mode. I didn’t see it in Practice mode. Sometimes it happens at the beginning of the mode, and sometimes it starts happening later on.

@Alex.liu I appreciate this seems to be caused by a game update, but I don’t know how it can override SS? Is there anything Pimax can have a look at? Is there more information I can provide for you?

  1. A lot of the SVR crashes to desktop when choosing certain modes (eg Training Fleet Battle / Dogfight) are still there, but can be worked around by setting Volumetric Quality to Low. This seems to be a known issue in both VR and non-VR, and that solved it for me. There is both a VR and non-VR setting for it.

I didnt bother because of the ghosting… Just use medium VR graphics settings, Pitool 1.0, and steamVR SS around 50%, with PP on, and it should work fine if you have a 2080Ti. I’m getting 75fps flat on the 8k x

go here and about the 8:23 mark of the video to see what it can look like on a Pimax 8Kx… although this guy calls it a Primax.

Hmmm OK thx I’ve got medium / low / couple of ultra settings on 2080 Ti, and it manages 35-40 without SS on…

Ah but I do have SS on 100% I think. That will be it

Anyway I’m curious about the new PT Smart Smoothing failure. I’ve not seen that before.

Thats a screen grab, not thru the lens video. This guy has no clue

If you notice, PP On or Off, the Resolution in SteamVR Settings changes. So when you turn PP ON, the resolution increases to some crazy high numbers for 100% SteamVR SS… That’s why I lowered it to about 50%, and i’m getting about 3000+ x 3000+ (cant remember the exact resolution but it was 3k x 3k+ for sure.

Game in general needs serious optimization and patchwork.

On my quest with link there is SEVERE lag after 10 minutes (butter smooth beforehand), seeing huge black boxes on turning my head… yet im getting 72fps on the dot. This is with both steamVR and native oculus via origin.

Similarly on the pimax, occasionally after a few missions my FPS just TANKS from full refresh rate to like 30 fps or lower. I’m far from the only one, people with rift S, index, vive all experiencing this. Total shame because the game is so much fun to play.

Completely broken for displays above 60hz. Right now the best setting with the pimax is 120hz with smart smoothing because that’s basically 60hz.

I captured video of another game using steamVR’s show VR mirror. In my case it looked good, but not quite as good as through the headset.
I thought that’s what this guy was doing.
Ah well. I’ve been wrong before and will be again.

Performance is stellar. What build is he playing?

I still can’t even get the game to run. I"ve tried launching from its icon and then enabling steam and PItools.
I’ve tried launching it from Pimax Experience
I can get to a screen that asks me to hit the space bar to confirm shifting to vr, but neither the space bar nor the mouse are able to make the ‘button’ depress and the game eventually turns into a SteamVR failure.
Argh. I even got a stupid EA membership just to get me past that first screen.
What the heck is going wrong? I think i’ll put this game back on the metaphorical shelf until it gets a bit less buggy. I don’t want to play in on the flat screen.
