Some controller Compatibility issues with Index controller (Some Info)

Okay, I can not reproduce any of this in oculus games. I have tried BeatSaber, Vader Immortal and Asgards Wrath for now without any glitches. Anyone?

Might be an idea to compare with @Skyrimer he has a different issue with Asgard crashing

Hmm, I’m using 258 on a 5K+ with Index controllers and v2 stations, but I haven’t experienced any issues with the controllers at all, everything tracks perfectly even over extended gameplay sessions. Very odd.

I found it most obvious in HL:Alyx after a while of play. Try carrying a bucket full of nades in your left hand and watch how often they get tossed!

But for those seeing this problem, when it’s happening at its worse if you immediately go back to Steam Home, does it still happen there?

Yes indeed it does continue if I quit to SteamVRHome at that time

Remove or cover reflective surfaces in your play area

Objects such as windows, mirrors, televisions, and monitor screens can interfere with tracking. If you are losing tracking or motion controllers occasionally float away in VR, try covering or removing reflective surfaces in your play area.

Rerun Room Setup

Performing a fresh room setup can help clear up any issues caused by changes to the environment or Base Station positioning.

Performance issues can mimic tracking issues

Spikes in performance quality and “lagging” behavior are usually caused by computer configurations that don’t meet our recommended requirements or aren’t functioning optimally. Local issues like these are tough to troubleshoot, so we recommend checking with a local computer specialist to find out how to best improve your computer’s performance.

To check for spikes in performance, run SteamVR and navigate to Settings > Video > Advanced Frame Timing . For detailed information on how to use this feature, check out this developer article.

You should really read this whole post before coming in here with amateur hour *hit.

So I tried 249 and I had unbearably bad performance. Do we have to downgrade firmware too when we downgrade PiTool? I’ve never downgraded. BUT, I installed the latest (the Half Life special edition one) and I was able to play Rick and Morty for about an hour without the tracking issue. I’m not concluding it’s fixed yet, but my fingers are crossed. I’ll play more over the weekend and report back.

Issues with index (controllers)

interesting about the clip on the side, But my index also has a clip at the back that appears to take the stress out of the side clip.

I haven’t put too many hours in, but I haven’t had the issues since I downgraded to 249 and then upgraded to the latest. I’ve played maybe 2-3 hours of Rick and Morty without this happening once.

Really? :see_no_evil: Anyway. I’ve tried 249 and the later ones with the same issue. Might try again to see

I plan to play a longer session of Pavlov or something maybe tonight. I’ve been hooked on Valorant

Issue still happening, even after changing USB ports and disconnecting literally all other USB devices (saw PimaxUSA suggest this on Reddit)

UPDATE: the problem has NOT completely disappeared for me, even with two Steam Controller dongles with flashed firmware. It has been somewhat reduced.

I’m not sure if keeping both of them in the front panel of my case somehow makes it worse, I will experiment more tonight.

What’s the most reliable way to detect it? I’ve seen someone use the logs of… something - where can I find those?

EDIT: where can I find the serial number? The label on my headset is now almost illegible.

I think the headset box has it as well. Pitool might have it displayed somewhere.

The fact that the problem persists even with the Steam Controller dongles makes me wonder on where the bottleneck may be. Does this mean that the dongles themselves have not enough bandwidth? Or is the USB bandwidth that is being stressed?

Would this problem manifest with dongles on an original Vive/Index?

the dongles have a very short range and most people that use them will hang them off usb extension cables so that may be whats happening here

Technically, you could attach the dongle to the headset (by using USB-C/USB-A cable), but this will not help offloading the USB from the headset to the pc (if it ever was a problem).
