You mean @park was a v5 tester. Seb, sweviver, thomas, pumcy etc… Were m1 Testers whom only received m1 to pre released “final production” sample from Berlin meetup (last model with Proximity sensor) before backer units shipped out.
I get that engineers need useful feedback, and I also know these guys were M1 testers, (Ive been on the forum this whole time,) but they are also youtubers.
Thomas’ HMD had a bad panel, did you guys check it before shipping?
Also, if engineers need feedback shouldn’t said feedback be based on a new sample so that the advice given doesn’t cause your team to take steps backwards?
If the scaler in the 8K+ is capable, you should have the engineers test 3200x1800 at 72-75hz as the hardware seems capable.
Boy this topic sure got derailed.
So…how 'bout that XTAL?
Anyone got a spare 5000 Euroes?
xtal is still the best vr headset now i see the video impressions of the rev2 version
It’s a 2,17 inches glass substrate OLED panel , so @ 2,228 ppi it should count around 4834 horizontal pixels.
Now that Pimax has showcased better products, I bet we can expect some improved Xtal version anytime soon
maybe they knew, if it was just internal for getting feedback opinion, if you work in development and hand over a unit to some tester next door you might say, to him to ignore the defective panel, check out the sde and color and tell me how you like it. no need to fix that defective panel for this, the unit will be thrown into the bin after this
depends on what you want to know, if his task would have been to check on latency problems and tell his opinion about the scaled up image and sde
if the electronics or sensors are already “final” and the panel will not change in regard of sde, resolution, pixel layout and only gets some tweaking
would need good communication bat seeing this example here tells us clearly that there is a lack of communication and then your arguments about misleading results are dead center
if they use the old setup/board of the 8k and just replacing the panels it will spare dev resources and costs
maybe also a marketing decisions, when it gets to close to the 8kx in visuals the 8kx will be much harder to sell, 8k+ needs to keep a distance to the 8kx and 1440p to 2160p might do the trick (especially when the 8kx can everything the 8k+ does)
i guess its a mixed back decision, the old 8k cant be sold anymore with these out of date panels, the new panels of the 8kx are at hand …
maybe similar to the situation they had with the 5k+ last year, keep it shut in the lab or do a new product because it looks to good the just keep it locked away
i dont think they are driven by that, they have business customers 1st and they have different demands, like best clarity and lowest distortion AND i guess best color reproduction (so they waited for anx7538/7539 and new 4k OLED panels)
there is also AR and 1st step would be external cam’s on the xtal but long term looks different
i think they are researchers/dev guy’s not business man’s at heart
the “gamers” edition might be just a smaller side project they would like to source out to a different company
i guess they just want to reel in money to keep on R&D, business customers are harder to get but as these are only fewer numbers its easier to handle for a smaller company (i’m sure pimax likes the theme park customers - thats what the RE was for)
Sure, but that is because I don’t spend on things like XTAL…
@Sjef here a recent impression from the xtal
I hope XTAL will once again be present at VRdays in November. Pimax will be there with at least 8K+ I assume so it will be a good 1-to-1 comparison there. Because as I see it now, Pimax is nearly better and for 1/3 the price. Though XTAL lenses are still far beyond Pimax.
Yeah for a $6000 price tag I’d want better panels. In fact, they had written me an email regarding my ‘order’ but I emailed them back with the question if they were going to offer higher resolution panels now Pimax is releasing their new hmds.
Also the weight of the hmd worries me somewhat
The XTAL looks like even more of a brick than the Pimax.
thats true, but i think it dont breaks that easy instead of the fragile pimax housing
Hey @john2910 just got a reply from vrengineers. They have plans for 4k panels but right now these are just plans. So that doesn’t sound like they’ll be available any time soon.
So all this doesn’t make it any easier to take a decision eh
SOON TM.
Honestly I’m like the least patient person out there it’s amazing that I’ve been waiting 2 years for the 8KX but now the 3 months feels like another 3 years.
Would be awesome if we could buy the lenses from vregineers and use them in the pimax 8k-X, like @VRGIMP27 suggested. But I’ve been thinking about it and it’s not going to be easy to do that, UNLESS pimax really goes open source. I’m sure they all use their own distortion algo’s specifically made for their lenses. It won’t be a matter of just editing some values this time (like with the gearVR Vive lens mod). You will need to use their algos.
thx for the information,i have also still hope acer comes with the star vr one…
Or you find a good optics student who can make you some custom lenses…
I think nobody has tried custom distortion profiles for pitool or at least I didn’t recognize…
