RTX 30 Series Discussion - Part 1

These benchmarks are exactly consistent with the RTX 3090 performing 1.5-1.6x better than an RTX 2080 Ti.

At this point, I think it is very safe to say the RTX 3090 is not twice as good as the RTX 2080 Ti.

(10496/8704)×(84/63)=1.61
(10496/8704)×(97/79)=1.48

I fear you missed his joke…

Easy, he’s on the way proposing to his gamer girlfriend.

Nah, anyone trying that would get whacked.

I totally did…

Don’t you mean RTX 3080?

No. I meant exactly what I wrote - 3090. I took the relative performance of the RTX 3080 vs RTX 2080 Ti, and multiplied that by the core count of the RTX 3090 vs RTX 3080, since the boost clocks are nearly the same.

I think it is very notable that these results are falling rather predictably well within the 1.6x suggested by core count and clock speed.

Most importantly, this is very strong evidence so far that all the NVIDIA stuff about ‘doubling cores and such’ is 100% marketing hype that should absolutely be ignored.

The same disregard should be given to all future NVIDIA marketing hype, since they had more to hype about this time around - doubling FP32, RTX, DLSS, tensor FLOPs, etc - than they are likely to ever again.

On the plus side, at least the lack of improvement in pixel fill rate does not seem to be a problem at 4k desktop resolutions. We need Pimax VR benchmarks at very high supersampling to know for sure though.

I don’t think you can rely on CUDA core count to estimate speed. The 3090 has 384bit memory bandwidth (935gb/s) whereas 3080 is 320bit (760gb/s). The 3090 has 20% faster memory.

But has only a little bit more power per watt performance as an 2080ti :joy: maybe 20-25% the real plus is the more on VRAM for this price.

A 350 watt oc 2080ti are nearly the same then a 350w 30xx and the 3080 is not really oc friendly…
Really a BIG Upgrade for every panic seller.

… You’re probably right but who knows at this point?

Some of the cards with three 8 pin connectors look interesting for overclocking but it will be a hot affair .

In addition to the popular OC reports, I had read that the 3080’s GPU could only be overclocked by two digits until it became unstable. more than +4% power was not possible.

Information on the 3090 would be interesting.
At the moment I’m still leaning towards the 420 watt power mod of the RTX Titan.

Shunt mod ?..

Jepp, but first I will see more raw power infos.
I can bought a trex from a friend for 1200eu, but not the next months.
Corvid comes back and I work in the event Industrie.
Really stupid, if you make a job in the club, but nobody can dance.

Not actually admitting to anything, but some people’s wives might have mistaken the amount paid for the 8KX as having been in Australian, not US dollars. Ahem.

What I don’t understand is why did Nvidia make us wait 17 days from announcement for the first release of the RTX 30 series, and why didn’t they decide to release both 3080 and 3090 on the same day? Why do we have to wait another week?

This would have the opposite affect if you paid in Yen
