Etherium mining is feasible with these cards ( rtx 3080 )
2 years pay back at $0.1 per watt
1 year pay back at $0.05 per watt power
If you have cheap electricity ( solar /wind etc ) mining is coming back .
Just rough guide
so these could soon be overpriced imo
Interesting! Should increase the value of 2080 TI cards a little again.
The way how these values are reached differs between the two cards though - the 2080 runs at much higher clock speeds while the 3080 reaches the similar effect with more compute units.
So perhaps the situation is a little like with Intel vs AMD where Intel is still competitive for games, because games don’t scale too well for higher core counts? So the situation might change for newer games(?)
And we don’t know yet how the 3080 overclocks. (First overclocking results on videocardz indicate that it is almost at it’s limit within the 320W power limit, no power mod was done though. Whether power modding a card to consume extreme amounts of power is economic is another reason for debate…)
The cooler might also be worth something, don’t know whether usual 2080 TI coolers are fit for 320W or more.
But sounds interesting nonetheless, cards having to be optimized to scale well with higher power usage (as told be the NVidia marketing guy for the 3080) might be not so relevant as they might wish in that case…
This time round the Founders Edition with it’s super cooler could well be as fast as many third party models can get , and if adding more power is not really feasible the differential will be the amount of memory on the cards 3080 super / ti
All down to overclockability
Right, so even if the FE cards are pre-binned then that only puts them on a level playing field with high end vendor cards for years now. And even if the cooler is something a bit special, that still puts it behind high end vendor offerings. Triple fan card > dual fan card > single fan stock cooler. This has been true for years and shows no sign of stopping.
Maybe we should post some benchmarks from OpenVR Benchmark with various cards
suggest that we do it for 5k+ at 90 fps , normal fov, hidden mask on (pitool 264 . nvid 452.06 ) I’m getting 40.4 fps 2080ti overclocked
( EVGA 2080ti black , water cooled with modified bios to get 124% power limit (cheapest 2080ti out there ))
interested to see what the difference is for vr using various high end graphics cards especially the 3080 FE / 3090 FE
The vendor 3080’s available on 17th will not be as fast as the 3080 FE’s that these guy’s will be reviewing ,
the vendor cards will be limited to 350w thermal limit against 370w FE cards
Getting hold of an 3080 FE @ £650 will be near impossible
Wait for the next batch of vendor cards with higher power , will cost more than £650 though
