I agree. I plan to wait for a 3080 20GB card, at a “reasonable” price. That means I probably won’t upgrade until spring of next year. That is, if I can stand to wait that long.
One good thing is that it looks like the availability will improve by October or so, which will hopefully counteract any scarcity due to coin-miners.
Wrong , you should rush out and get a 3080 now so when you realise that you want more memory and wish that you’d bought a 3090 they can present a bargain 3080ti with 20gb only £1100
That’s what I have done , picked up a water cooled 2080ti cheap and passed my 1080ti onto the kids for now , I’ll still try to get a 3080 but don’t rate my chances so will squeeze what i can out of this 2080ti , already flashed a rogue bios onto it , probably have to wait for the gpu dust to settle next spring before obtaining a 3080ti
yeah, for vr you don’t need the raytracing performance of the 30 series and dlss for vr is a ways ahead still. the 2080ti can push some pixels and it has more vram than the 3070 which will probably be hard to find for a while.
I suspect a lot of those who threw their cards on ebay will regret that they didn’t do it sooner so they could get more for it or that they did it at all when hey cant get a replacement for it. hopefully all us scarcity predictors are wrong.
I prefer to buy new equipment, but it sounds like you made a good choice.
Since I already have a 2080, getting a 2080 Ti doesn’t make a lot of sense. Neither does getting an nVidia FE 3090, but that’s what I’m really lusting for. Luckily, they won’t be readily available, so I won’t need to use my (miniscule) self control.
That’s true. But it looks like all future Nvidia series will be RTX based. Probably because raytracing is becoming cheaper and more efficient. As someone who plays both VR and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, I like the ray tracing effects. Definitely the VRAM and higher speed will greatly benefit VR.
I do not disagree, just saying that if you don’t need the raytraycing then the 2080ti is not a bad choice if you can get it for cheap, especially if the 30 series becomes really hard to find.
Yeah, 2080 Ti is still a fantastic card for VR. It can run most games smoothly. I remember when I first upgraded from 1080 Ti to 2080 Ti, I was able to play 144Hz in my Index on practically any Pavlov map whereas before I had reprojection. It’s amazing to think that 14 year olds with a 1070 can now go out and afford a 2080 Ti. It will revolutionize the quality of games
Just in case any of you guys haven’t seen the info posted by Moore’s Law is Dead (link provided above by neal_white_iii) you really need to go back and watch it - it’s really important info IMO. If Moore’s Law is Dead is anywhere near correct (and he usually is) Nvidia is attempting to cleverly screw us.
FE cards don’t makeup a big part of the marketshare, I am not too worried about what anomalies may exist with their pricing, performance, and availability. It’s the 3rd party vendors like EVGA and Asus, and whatever their price / performance / availability looks like that will set the tone for the launch.
Due to scarcity (artificial/manipulated or not), expect prices to be noticeably higher than the MRP (manufacturers recommended price), at least for the next month or 2.
People seem to keep forgetting that the higher the price, the less buyers there are. Nvidia made the prices reasonable for a reason. It’s basic market economics. There’s no conspiracy going on like Moore’s law is dead thinks.
