Quest 2 Discussion, will it beat the G2?

Yep. Just bought 2. And I hate FB.

BTW Quest 2 itself is really cheap but the accessories are quite expensive. But yeah with all that stuff price is still acceptible I think…

I watched the whole thing now. Their AR stuff is straight out of Black Mirror. This is some seriously scary dystopian stuff. I don’t even wanna ask how many laws this stuff violates…

No different than quest 1. The carrying case I own I can already tell will fit this HMD and controllers.

Oculus official cables, cases etc are really expensive but aftermarket solutions on amazon would put your total cost at no higher than 375 to have an excellent PC VR experience with a traveling case. The price cannot be beaten.

Facial recognition technology is already about to be deployed in many states around my country (USA) as early as elementary school. Deepfakes already exist, if you’re dedicated enough you can ruin someones life. AI can pretty easily tell what’s real and what isn’t already with that stuff. Yes it’s scary, and I can’t convince you to not worry about it. But at the end of the day, people said the same thing about smart phones a decade ago. Innovation is good

Facial recognition is just part of it. But the “live maps” feature was also scary. It is basically google street maps, but with object and face recognition and indexing, and also indoors. They even went as far as describing “neural clicking” for the AR glasses UI, which implies reading brain waves.

Sorry, but Facebook will not, under any circumstance, get to read my brain.

So you wont be first in line to get a neuralink installed I take it? :stuck_out_tongue:

I think reading brainwaves is one thing, writing to them is actually potentially horrifying. Not sure I’d want a virus on one of those, but it seems to be where things are headed with both Valve and Elon heavily researching it. Exciting possibilities with some scary implications.

Nope, no Neuralink for me as long as there is not a medical condition leaving me no choice.

Reading is scary enough, especially with data mining style inference techniques applied to that. Writing is a different thing, it is surprisingly easy in some instances (audio or visual cues it is being said) but surprisingly hard in others (sense of temperature, since it is connected to the immune system it seems). Moreso than Elon and his Neuralink, look up the Newells of Valve fame, both Gabe and his son are deep into that stuff and have spoken at length about it.

While the tech is fascinating, I simply don’t trust any manufacturer of such equipment whose business model is built around trading user data.

So it can work with an IPD of 58, 63, and 68 mm only - I guess my 72 mm make it clear I won’t be spending much on Quest 2.

My Quest 1 is the last (and the latest) headset which can work with my IPD, I probably should start thinking about changing my hobby.

yeah my IPD is 71 but I’m going to give it a try anyway. Picking it up from Amazon so it’ll be easy to return if I find that it won’t work for me. I suspect that it might anyway though because the Go headset had no IPD adjustment and I could use that fine. At this price I have to at least give it a try though.

So it sounds like the consensus is that Facebook went the original Pimax way with their cheap uncomfortable soft strap.

Worse. IPD adjustment seems to suck badly and all the weight savings they boasted about seem to be in the cheap strap. Once you put on the proper strap again, you end up with equal weight of the predecessor and also add at least 50 bucks to that 299 price tag they fool people with. Once you add the accessories to make this a proper setup, you are not that far off from a G2 anymore.

And also costs add up once you have to buy a bunch of Quest exclusive titles for the best native VR experience. I have a big library of Quest games that were not cross buy so it was quite a waste of money when I sold the Quest. Plus an $80 oculus link cable just to get a subpar wired PCVR experience?

64gb wont be enough for future AA or AAA Quest VR titles that use higher res textures, etc. So they’ll make double profit when you sell your 64gb for a 256gb version.

Facebook’s goal is for you to be so financially invested in their VR ecosystem that it’ll dissuade you from switching to new competitors.

I’m supposed to be getting both headsets soon so might be a great comparison vid?

i get it now. 4k single panel 3840x2160 / 2 1920x2160 per eye
Quest 2 1834x2160 per eye.

so its a 4k panel but to allow for IPD adjustment the are only utilizing 95% of the horizontal.

I’m down I ordered it from amazon .(well played Zuck, this to me beat the ps5 event, finding out Spiderman is on ps4 just saved me having to get a ps5 on launch day, though i may still order to scalp )

Strange thing on oculus site they were selling the the Elite Strap with built in battery and Case for 209 and they were out of stock.

But on amazon like 12 hrs later they are selling the same thing for

also something sketchy, on oculus site the fine print said link doesn’t work with Elite Strap with battery. I assume they mean you cannot plug the link cable to the back.

only thing that sucks about that is it would really be nice if while playing rift games with it the cable could attach to the back of the neck instead of dangling from the side.

Kind of a missed opportunity.

Also they should have included OG rift style headphones with the Elite Strap that would have been incredible.

oh well hopefully vr ears updates their design to be in white and clip on like this

Cas thinks the Quest 2’s LCD has more realistic colors than the Quest.(source)

wow , you really reached back for that example…it might have been more effective to pick a less ancient example

“It reminds me of the first time i bought a color tv, lots of hype but most channels were still in black and white”

one thing’s for sure, the resale value of the OG Quest might actually go up because its the only wat to get those sweet, oled pixels now.

Now I have two collector’s items OG Rift & Quest.

They tried to read mine but couldn’t find anything. :joy:

every one of these sneaky bastards had it the whole time. Go back and watch the last two weeks of Freality and the all of the cues were there.

I thought it was weird when the Quest2 leaked that tyriel or VROasis didn’t do a video

the only guys that did probably didn’t have one.

these guys have been banned from Pimax @SweViver said so

mine is 70 but if you think about those 3 settings on average most people will be a few points off, but close enough maybe. If it doesn’t work out , that’s why i bought from Amazon.

i think they are hoping that the magic 299 price is worth making the strap an accessory, and that most people wont care.

Those that do will buy and gives them extra $. Think about it for the Q2 to be on the same level as Q1 you basically “need” the elite strap $299 is a farce.

well at least the battery powered one will counter balance, i’ve already cancelled my vr power order.

yeah, my Quest is already at 90-ish and doom 3 is coming
