Yeah its a bit of a hard one.
We kind of have something inbetween.
Tbh i expected $10 or less headphones on a standard strap as our stretch goal.
Im not too bothered, but i understand some might be as its projected instead of on ear.
They might turn out to be better than cheap on ear ones.
It would be nice to hear some user reviews though.
If they turn out worse than vive das, i would be disappointed
Yes Kevin should have been able to clarify this right away as a language barrier or not. He is an intelligent U.S. english speaking individual that was hired specifically for that reason.
Not making a comment on my personal opinion on the discount/trade-in, but it seems that the thread is a bit off track and people are arguing on the semantics of words.
It seems there are two main groups. The one that is looking at the wording of the offer and saying “yes, you are getting a $100 discount and some amount of trade-in credit for streach goals”.
Another is looking past the wording to how it feels and saying “I feel my strech goals are worth more that the discount and credit so it doesn’t feel like I am getting a discount and it feels like just a trade-in. It also feels like Pimax was being deceptive in promising a discount.” But they don’t say “I don’t feel like this I got a discount” and say “There is no discount it is a trade-in”.
This confused the 1st group that said “There is a $100 discount and a trade-in” and now we are arguing about the definitions of the word “discount”.
It seems like the main discussion points of this thread is:
“I feel like my streach goals are worth more than Pimax is giving me even with the $100 backer ‘discount’”
“I feel like it is wrong for Pimax to call this a backer ‘discount’ when there is no way to get the $100 backer ‘discount’ without giving up streach goals”
“I feel like the discount/trade-in for backers is not as good of a deal as the current owner discount”
Edit: And also the opposite of all of these such as “I feel that the current discount/trade-in is and acceptable deal”
Hmm if you are thinking of the $100 downgrade credit. That is not a discount, it’s credit for the $100 extra we payed for 5k+.
All 8kx have a “special $100 discount” this is in addition to the “$50 opt-out bonus” all plans have. The 8k -> 5k+ plans have an additional “coupon” according to the original slides.
So if you look at the words alone, Pimax is saying the streach goals are worth $50 (now $150). There is also a special backer discount of $100 on the 8kx specifically. Though there is no plan that lets you keep the streach goals and get the $100 discount. So it is would also be correct to say that it is a trade-in worth $250 but also equally correct to say it is a trade in worth $150 and a discount worth $100.
See below:
Yeah I think I’ll pass this time since I don’t like the way how backers are treated differently from the current owners. And where is my $100 and 3 pieces of software, thought it was said at Pday1 “we’re already working on it, it’s a huge task” still AFAIK nobody has received anything.
I believe no one is going to receive anything until Pimax sends a questionnaire to every backer and gets the confirmation that they can ship. Right now, we are all considered to be in the “decision” period and Pimax cannot ship anything because what if the particular backer changed his mind (but did not have any means to communicate it to Pimax)?
I expect Pimax will drag/ignore/downplay the shipping as long as possible, all the messages they gave so far point to that.
You’re talking about our old friend, survival-munky.
Yes, there is a difficult situation now.
Still, the problem lies a little deeper, in my opinion.
The very first stumbling block is the wrong panels in the OG 8K.
If there were real 4K RGB panels in 8K, and not PenTile, then now there would be no special talk about discounts.
We would calmly use our 8K, and the transition to 8KX would not really bother us, that’s for sure (just look at the difference between 8K + and 8KX).
I repeatedly raised this question and asked for a replacement / upgrade to 8K +.
But Pimax didn’t do this (when other companies recall unfinished products and modify them for free or replace, including even cars). Well, that is their right.
Instead, they set a different precedent by offering a sense of discount instead of a real discount. And this is stumbling block number 2.
This causing another wave of negativity, but already much more, because everyone knows how to count (as opposed to understanding how OG 8K panels match real 4K RGB panels).
So here we need to look deeper, the problems started earlier.
In the current situation, for a positive outcome, I see two ways for Pimax:
-
The first way (less expensive for Pimax). Keep stretched goals for backers taking into account current discounts, or extra increase the discount by $ 100-200 with loss of goals.
-
The second way promises higher costs (for Pimax), because in my understanding, it consists in replacing / upgrading 8K and 5K + (for which switched from 8K) to 8K +
(Pimax will not do this.)
Unfortunately, I do not see other options for a positive outcome, so that the decision is fair and that the backers are satisfied
However, in the absence of further changes, it is already possible to work with current plans if you can forget about stretched goals and want to free yourself from all further expectations.
Yes, this is less profitable, because goals are profitable achievements.
But if the company does not make additional concessions, then there are two options:
-
Do not change anything, wait for the goal, stations and controllers, use an outdated headset before any discounts of 8K + / 8KX. I think it will be possible to get 8K + at the next sale for $ 850-900 (8KX for $ 1100-1150).
-
Use update plans for backers, get among the first the new headset (what is already an advantage), free yourself from expectations. Investments on 8K + here will amount to $ 800 in plan D with loss of goals, 8KX for $ 950.
In the case of 8KX, it looks good enough to use now (because the discount on it is higher).
And in the case of 8K +, you can wait for sales.
In general, here you speculate with your stretched goals and time.
Personally, in my opinion, getting a new headset among the first is an additional advantage for backers (after all, we could be in the general queue, because now it’s not Kickstarter).
Really simple offer a Plan with discount that doesn’t involve backers giving up things. Straight up $100 to $150.
$150 and possibility to use the $100 I’m in.
@Heliosurge, but do you agree that if there were 4K RGB panels originally in 8K, then we shouldn’t worry about upgrading now?
And everything would be wonderful in general.
Possibly. Tbh happy with the 8k overall(sure rgb or rainbow rgb panel would have been better). But if they had honored what they said would be tempted by the 8kX as this is 100x better than the prototype planned released.
Now sure many on the opposite likely wouldn’t be in a hurry to buy if it had the original planned panels of the 8k.
This just seems ‘pimax’ reputation is not going to be a good one anytime soon with their U Turns on their honor.
Well, in any case, I believe that if 8K had real 4K RGB panels, then we would quietly continue to use it now, despite the 8KX release (because there would be really little difference between them, pictures from SweViver prove it).
For me, the biggest disappointment was the 8K’s displays.
And now there would be nothing of this, no worries with discounts, furious backers, etc.
Because 8K with 4K RGB panels would make everyone happy, I’m more than sure.
And I consider this mess with discounts an indirect consequence of the lack of RGB panels in 8K.
Now, with the simultaneous release of 8K + and 8KX, it is worth updating to 8KX because of the small difference in price for backers.
Well Voodoodx with the sample said not worth upgrading to 8k+ with the rgb. Even if his was a 4 month old sample.
Backer price without moving you KS credits for unshipped items no deal at all.
Now come up with a plan to opt out of 3 pieces of Content for $50 & be good.
Yes, but nevertheless VooDoo was impressed by the clarity of the panels, as it seemed to me (it was just that there was a bad auto-translation, and I did not understand much).
Then remember the comparisons SweViver “Pimax 8K+ vs HP Reverb”.
The 8K + looks like HP, or even slightly better it in terms of clarity and SDE.
Remember the 8K + MRTV review? He was very impressed.
What else can you dream of when a headset with a wide FOV reaches the sharpness level of the HP Reverb and, possibly, even surpasses it? (Well, except that it remains to completely remove the distortion).
I think you underestimate the advantages of RGB over PenTile a little if you think that it makes little sense to replace 8K with at least 8K +. (because 8K is at a lower level due to its PenTile panels)
It’s just that 8K from the very beginning should have been with 4K RGB panels…
Yes but as many users & SweViver pointed out. It is only good for a vague idea. Comparing SDE to a point sure.
But really need a firm with Professional equipment to get proper repeatable pics. Like Eurogamer, Doc Ok, Etc…
SweViver & others that do Vid/Pics TTL do well for their limited equipment. But can’t see anyone at their level purchasing the vr robot head to test headsets. Though would greatly reduce time required to try & get good repeatable condition shots.
MRTV often gives a nice review on first impression(unless really bad). His later reviews he gets more in depth.
No I don’t underestimate Pentile(Samsung™) like vs RGB. And also was disappointed that these panels in that regard were not equal to P4k with the Rainbow RGB. Of which like the pixel pattern better than standard rgb grid layout.
Remember the 5k+ is RGB and I have both. The 8k for me was better over the stacked blocks. Now if the 8k has been able to be made with RGB panels at the time yes it would have been 10x better than the 5k+ vs maybe the 5x better.
One user pointed out the Diagonal panel type used in the 8k is often found in projectors.
The 8k would have been RGB if these newer panels were available. Tested first confirmed the Pentile like arrangement. & Engadget created the first article claiming pimax was going full RGB(which was true for 5k+) from an unamed pimax source. Then various pimax personnel muddied this as well.
Still seems to be a miss as 5kXR see the rgb.
I saw the “it’s a huge task” on the steam codes comment and thought I would throw in some real world facts to that. My wife did data entry for a job 20 years ago and I just checked with her. She was tested several times at 18,000 keystrokes per hour. So if Steam codes are 25 characters long times 6000 backers times 3 pieces of software = 450,000 characters divided by 18,000 equals …
25 hours and the job is done.
Yes maybe faster than trying to automate it.
But memorizing that many steam codes & your 25hours would be long day. This doesn’t take into or maybe does email address changes. So maybe add +5hrs?
There is no memorizing in that Helio. Just straightforward sitting with a list of 6000 different steam codes for game 1, 6000 different steam codes for game 2 and again for game 3.
Backer 1, tab to next cell, enter number, tab to next cell, enter number, tab to next cell, enter number, tab to backer 2, rinse and repeat.
Agreed on potential address changes. Plus breaks and lunch, 8 hour days, 3 1/2 - 4 days.
That’s all assuming Steam doesn’t supply the codes in a spreadsheet to start with which makes it a 10 minute job.
