Always stay away from Kickstarter. I only backed this because I knew other companies were too lazy to make high FOV.
Yes not promise something you can reasonably give. In the Kickstarter campaign eye tracking was added just to increase campaign founding.
Itâs not because that we expect something that we will necessarily accept itâŚ
I, meanwhile, pledged to two kickstarters just in the span of the past week.
You just need to realise the realities and ficklenesses of things, and make a judgement on the creators. Pimax, I definitely backed as a high-risk one, and only after much internal debating back and forth â I would say they have in all exceeded my expectations, but their degree of honesty and forthrightness to this day leaves a lot to be desired.
Agreed, this was a 50/50 Kickstarter, didnât take the complet kit not realistic for the pleadge delivery date. Didnât take the hand tracking because it was linked to an unreliable third party. But yes overall a positive pledge
@oysta1109 Thatâs the best option. Faux 4k projectors are 90% as good for 1/4 the price. Come check out my setup for ideas if you want bro Also managed to smuggle in a Valve index! Flick me a txt anytime
cheers bro
I moved house so Iâm no longer at my old manâs place. Still waiting for my plasma tv to die but it just kept going lol, so either it dies or a good deal comes up then Iâm looking into a laser projector. Will ask you for advice when that happens.
Ok so are you going to buy the 8kx when it gets released now that you have index?
I respectfully disagree. It would be an upgrade from any of the currently-shipping Pimax HMDs. True, the SDE would be noticeable, much like the 8K. While that SDE bothers me, if the OLED panel is smaller, a PenTile OLED 8KX would have somewhat less SDE. Plus, it would have native res, so the image would be better. And its refresh rate is 90 Hz, if you run it at the 2K res.
So, for those that prefer OLED, the 8KX would probably be the best HMD, at least for awhile (and ignoring any business-oriented HMDs).
I believe sweviver and Kevin are good PR people. They just need to be allowed to speek out more. Its unfortunate they are placed in the position they are. We need not shoot the messengers in this case for what they say and how often they do. I believe they have done their part in all this well. I hope they continue to stay with pimax as they may be our only real voice to Robin Weng and other pimax executives. Hopefully they continue to pressure Pimax executives that their deployment methods and prices are not fully exceptable to community members and work towards smoothing things out. Overall Pimax has exceeded my expectations of the campaign by delivering anything but do feel now they are operating more like every other corporation and are focused mostly on profit. Maybe that is the pressure of the other investors. But those investors should know that the backers were first. We must also know that without them this project may not have been nearly as successful. We may have never saw anything without them. If Iâm left with paying for eyetracking and comfort kit (that is clearly part of the headstrap in KS photos) then its my choice to decline it or not. It stinks that they are using this as a marketing scheme in hopes of profits. I do believe they would have better luck satisfying the kickstarter terms as stated and having a community that is raving good things of them and their products. By creating hostility and bitterness will cost them profits in the long run. They could have the potential to accumulate all my future VR dollars but could easily erase all of them. Not saying anything done thus far is a complete deal breaker for me. Just feel that there is valid arguments being made and mistakes are easily made. Would like to see Pimax succeed but they should play this game for the long haul and not just try to grab a quick buck now that it looks like they may be on to something. They have our interest peaked but not our hearts won. Be good to your community deliver the best products you can at the most reasonable price and continue success in their visions. The backers shouldnât strike out at each other over their options and thoughts everyone will have their own feelings towards each scenario. If you feel strongly about it and compelled to say something just state your point. But we can all be wrong!
P.S. I think the comfort kit looks like trash. Hope it works better then it looks. Looks like a heat deflector back to the face and head. Maybe they should third party with neuralink with that design. Sweviver actually gave a fine example of its potential in the cooling fan slide.
Hereâs the TL;DR for the wall of text aboveâŚ^
Btw - the photo you link at the bottom, Martin and I got a good laugh creating it. The pic of the fellow hit by a water hose depicting a âsweatyâ person was an inside joke that made it all the way to the presentation.
The comfort kit itself is quite a neat deal as the small angle change and distance have a dramatically positive effect for some people. The added area of foam on the forehead definitely makes it where you can wear the headset much longer, especially when combined with the new mas.
On the different offerings the programs have to fit within the capital resources that are available. Itâs easy to say just offer more discounts and take a big loss on an item or the headsets etc. but within a small company you have to very carefully calibrate each item. Each program must be multiplied by over 5,000 people. I imagine it would be easy for Facebook or HTC to spend $4M in 1 month on a single item to enhance their customers experience (but they donât even try btw) but that sort of thing is not in the realm of possibility for us. When an item costs more than planned that is a huge deal for us.
For instance after a lot of testing when we found out that the stretch goal of one eye tracker (just 1 eye) needed engineering mods for wide fov and canted displays and also dramatically benefited using tracking from a second eye tracker (with the same mods). The added requirements changed the resource requirement over 6 fold. The fact we had to include 2 eye trackers instead of 1 and change the design of both caused that program to come within the thinnest hair of being cancelled. The design change for the wide fov and canted displays was a huge deal because had the ancillary effect we didnât benefit from the volumes our partner planned to produce and therefore our volumes became one-offâs. This combined to escalate the costs well beyond impossible territory so the program that is offered continues the offering and gives us a chance to drive down the cost via volumes, negotiation etc.
I found that graphic highly entertaining @PimaxUSA, good job guys. I invited you to participate in the topic I just started about the discounts and while i appreciate what you just said about them and agree for the most part,
Iâd like to know your comment on whats pimaxâs plan to address the most glaring issues identified in the headsets which may be caused by design flaws which may prevent the usefulness of the eyetracker and prevent people who have experienced eyestrain issues before from buying fhe newer headsets or the eyetracker. Until pimax does something to address eyestrain as well the public perception will not be great on places like Reddit.
This is what you should have included right at the start of the presentation when you got to the eye tracker, not you and martin giggling like children and just saying âwell we said free but its $200, so, yeah, there it isâ
it not to says that if the 8K-X is a success that Pimax could by involved with a manufacture to do a full OLED 5inch RGB panel.
There are RGB OLEDS that are great, but they tend to have greater Mura then LCDs, merely due to the physical nature of the displays, so even if the SDE is mitigated by smaller panel size you can get a fine linen like texture, even on insanely high resolutions like 8K.
I love OLED for their response times, color gamut, and for pure black level, but LCDs are getting better all the time, and due to their square pixel structure, they pack in better (seemingly.)
Its why the early OLED HMDs like Sonyâs HMDâs the HMZ T Series used LCOS to brute force the insanely high ppi needed. With time OLED will ve better, but at the high FOV, angular resolution is very important if you want a lower cost, so LCD is a good compromise.
So, for example, PSVR mitigates its OLEDâs shortcomings with a lens doublet design.
Carmack just said at OC6 that even the rift S LCD is capable of 90hz but that the device would lose its FCC certification if they upped the refresh rate.
LCD is good for cost savings, and you could stack two LCDs, one a VA panel, and the other, an IPS, which could allow for thousands of local dimming zones
Comfort kit itself is a good idea but not very well though out, humans sweat from the forehead and that big chunk of foam is going to get in the way, especially if you intend to fit the fan module on top, just make a big hole in the plastic and the foam, at least it would lets some air in.
Wondering the same thingâŚ
chevrons in the foam should do it
Gel pads with a high heat transfer coefficient in place of foam⌠Integrated piping for liquid cooling⌠:9
can anyone clarify the 8k+ is indeed getting an upgraded input system and not just screens
and is the 8kx still using 2 x cable?
