Part of my appeal toward the free eyetracking was that it would no longer be niche. Pimax giving about 5000 out would then incentive the devs to actually make games that use it. Now as far as I’m concerned all it will be useful for is tech demos. I fully see them selling so few development of the foveated rendering and it ancillaries stop.
I would say that this 8K Kickstarter was about 50% successful. (given the flaws in the form of distortions and not the highest resolution of 8K)
Because for a VR headset, it is, first of all, resolution + FOV.
Well, let it be 60% successful, because resolution is not worse than conventional headsets
But this is far from the quality of the 4K panels that were promised.
therefore, if not replacing our 8K with 8K + or replacing panels, then a 40% discount on new headsets should be provided at least approximately …
Yes, resolution plays a huge role in the quality of the VR headset, and there’s nothing to be done.
If in 8K there would initially be 4K RGB panels, then I would say that the goal is 90% successful (minus 10% for distortion for me) In general I would be more than satisfied.
If by replace you mean I do it hell no. The only way the plan is viable is if it involves sending back to them and they replace it. Just because one person was willing to risk it and was successful doesn’t mean that the rest of us will be.
Yes, that would be better if qualified specialists replaced it.
There are always risks.
This is to say that if the 8K and 8K + are all the same, except for the panels, then it will be easiest to replace the panels
That is, you got a ready-made headset, but with the wrong panels.
When the right panels appeared, you just replaced them and everything is in order.
Of course, the best thing for backers would be to replace the headset, without any unnecessary delays.
But something I do not notice the desire of Pimax to replace them (presently)
They have not mentioned the total backer discount they are going to offer. In theory they could basically be doing this. We will have to wait and see. Lets hope they pleasantly surprise us (even though it dont appear tha way). I believe their practices and product quality will cost them in the long run. Its wearing on my decisions for sure but would like to see them stick around.
It would have been cool from the start if it was a completely modular design. Not limited to any version at all. Allowing us to upgrade at will, out of pocket of course.
By the way, it was modularity that was implied from the very beginning of the 8K series.
The number of modules initially enthralled me. like the promised high resolution coupled with wide FOV.
A VR headset that you can always upgrade to a higher level.
And then OSVR HDK comes to mind, which had tremendous support.
But did not get much distribution. Valve and Oculus turned out to be more serious opponents.
OSVR was uncomfortable as hell. Way more then Pimax. It was my first look at pc vr.
You lost me - and my calculator - completely. As far as I am aware, Pimax said that you’d be able to select the Index controllers instead of the Sword controllers and pay the price difference. That difference would appear to be 149$ (Sword backer price 150$, Index retail price 299$ on their website last time I looked). No idea what you calculated… but unsurprisingly the result was to prove nasty intent of Pimax…
[my bad, appears to have been 200$; I don‘t remember the additional cost for the Index to have been said to be 179$ though]
So you are seriously complaining that Valve is producing them and not Pimax ? Oh right, we wanted Pimax build quality and all we get is sh*tty Valve quality !!!
Jesus… talk about trying to find negatives
With all annoyance on the delays and communication policy, I really cannot understand this kind of attitude. This KS wasn’t a 4-years old kid’s birthday party, this is real life. Others have real issues too, and their actions are not solely driven by the desire to make us happy.
your pricing may be slightly off but I dont know for sure. Im not paying close attention to it because I never backed it. Most off this is all water under the bridge for me. But they do keep making it interesting at least.
Most of us have had more time in this forum then in the headset.
Just the added perks of the campaign. I’ve got my entertainment factor out of pimax for sure!
Indeed. Though I honestly do believe had these panels been available last year prior to Berlin Backer meet we would have been offered the 8k+ as the logistics wouldn’t be affected. One key problem I see is the Headsets already sold (8k) with wanting an exchange/trade in.
But a panel upgrade partnership with local qualified firms(pimax cert) could be an idea for a panel upgrade option.
As said before the front panel in a revised model should be user replaceable in design as this could add another layer to the modular design for upgradability. Much like the HTC Cosmos is making steamvr tracking plate an add on option instead of a permnament enslaving to it. It would also allow user to purchase a replacement if user neglience damage etc…
Not a program but a possibility. Even as another user mentioned he’d consider to buy oled rgb panel for his 5k+ to try an upgrade if panels became available(not necessarily from pimax).
Difficult to put a % on success. Remember it was backers whom ultimately green lit the release based on results of seeing & trialing the headsets at the Berlin Backer meet. It’s more other items & stretch goals that have more knocked it down.
Yes the eyetracking was the most unrealistic stretch goal. They never believed they could reach it.
Thats why it was the last one. If they made a 5 million dollar stretch goal the project may have passed that. Don’t know what it would have been? It seams they should have made eyetracking a 6 million dollar stretch goal. Thats all.
The sword was not even announced when the kickstarter was around. they were just called controllers and 2 of them cost $200 +$10 shipping. Pimax has now said that on top of that ($210) you need to pay $179 to switch to index. Index controllers are $279 (US). So we are talking $389 total to switch to the index!
I believed what Pimax said is your will need to pay the price differences + “SMALL FEE”. That small fee was $100 for backer who pledge full package. So instead of $79 price differences, it come out to be $179 differences. This is for both LS and controller. I do not know how much Pimax want if you only order controller and wish to upgrade to index.
No it wouldn’t, shipping a few thousand units is nothing. Development costs far more than the return from that many units for anything beyond a small tech demo.
Unless we see low level nvidia support so devs basically get it free, or vive sales in 10s of thousands, preferably 100k plus you are not going to see much.
Otherwise it is just more special-case unused code to test, maintain and edge cases that need to be managed.
