It’s actually Pimax Month. The banner has been up for a week and Pimax day was on the 16th.
Well, you can check out from hotel Pimax any time you like, but…
The must be writing them off.
See what they do for the backers next month.
At this point it looks like the developed a cheaper alternative to all the headsets to distribute to the kickstarter campaign. Now they are baiting us to buy big. Sure hope they can sweeten the pot. They can tempt us with wonderful graphics but it will take more then that if they want to sell thousands of more headsets. These are enthusiasts headsets and we are the enthusiasts community!
I know them rather well.
Sell sell sell!
Already sold your stocks? Isn’t that how Martha Steward got into trouble?
Their misfortune happened long ago actually.
Shhhhhhhhh… …yes
Well to be fair. This does look legit on tech/panel availability at the time. But it is possible other 4k lcd panels might have been available for projectors. As one user pointed out Diagonal pixel pattern is used often in Projectors.
Though interestingly was the 4k oled 5-5.5" panel demoed in 2015 by a chinese firm. But other than 732ppi & targeting VR no sku appeared since. The company is still making displays but no 4k oled sku. Guessing too many production stability issues to make any volume.
If you read you would know your partner (7insvison) is releasing eye trackers that fit vive, vive pro and cosmos for $150 retail. Also pimax has decided to give nothing to backers who do not want to spend $200 on what was supposed to be free eye tracking. This is not a good look. I’m sure if you backed and did not work for pimax you’d be pissed too.
From what I understand the eye tracking is no longer free for the backers. This is disappointing, but that is how business is sometimes. I’m sure eye tracking cost more than they expected or something. I’m not too worried about it because like nobody is going to make useful applications for it anyways. I am concerned however about the other aspects of the kickstarter campaign. Are the backers still going to receive other useful promised items such as the audio strap, and cooling unit. Also, during the campaign there was a list of order-able items like extra foams, straps, 10 meter cables, and hand tracking modules. I shelled out like 300 extra dollars for a bunch of these add-ons. Is Pimax going to honor those promises. I understand if a “free” addon was too expensive to give away to backers after the fact. Are they going honor to “paid” add-ons? I am going to be very upset with this company if they backtrack promises further.
They screwed this kickstarter up big time by making the 5k+ and the 8k to close in performance. Now the 8k+ is announced less than a year later. From what I understand, that should have been the 8k from the beginning, as it addresses the 8ks problems, and that we 8k backers got shafted with an unfinished product. It was simple in the beginning there were three headsets the 5k the 8k and the 8kx. Now there is the 5k, 5k+, 8k, 8k+, and 8kx not counting BE’s. The 5k backers were upgraded to the 5k+ which was nice, but as this 8k+ must have been in development, it would have been nice to offer a delayed shipment and allow 8k backers to upgrade to the 8k+. I’m sure this is singing to the choir, but I’ve just about had it with Pimax.
Don’t blame the 5K+, all it did was make 8K users realize how lackluster their headset was. It would have been the same headset with or without the appearance of the 5K+. The 5K+ was a bonus to all 5K backers, and all 8K backers had the option to switch, there is literally nothing to complain about there. The 8K+ wasn’t developed yet at the time and there’s no way backers would accept another year wait to get it.
The eye tracking is no longer free, but it’s going to be a much better eye tracking than we would have got for free. They could probably still give us a free version, but it would be crap and no one would use it, which is what I expect everyone would have gotten if Pimax was just interested in fulfilling a checklist of Kickstarter promises.
I think everyone agrees with you that Pimax could not provide good eye tracking for free which is a bummer, but reasonable. Pimax as a company does not seem very efficient. This is what I am referring to when saying Pimax needs to keep their promises as these are paid add-ons.
Also about the 8k+. Pimax had other options; its not so black and white. There were many posts when the 5k+ was announced about a desire to wait for an 8k+ or for information about an 8k+ plan. The what if game can be played all day, but i would suggest that at the time a lot of people would have waited for a 8k+ (I know I would have). The correct action at the time would have been to offer the opportunity to wait. Nobody is blaming the 5k+ for anything, it was a nice thing for them to do. They should have offered 8k backers the same option to upgrade to an 8k+ with a wait, or switch to the 5k+, and not offer the 8k model at all, like how the 5k model was not offered at all. As you say yourself the 8k model is lack luster, and should never have been shipped. It was not so clear at the time which was a better headset, because there was a lot of debate and various youtube videos saying x is better for this and y is better for that. The 8k was slated originally to be the superior hmd that cost a little more, and the 8k+ seems to accomplish this. It’s just how it is.
Yes their is room to complain. The 5k got better panels and now the 8kx got better panels. Those who stuck with the “flagship” 8k have gotten nothing but shafted. And the options given were down grade and take $100 coupon at retail pricing not KS (so losing money) or stick with the 8k and wait for the upgrade plan they kept talking about. As to the 8k+ they should have never developed less than a year after shipping all the KS pledges.
So any 8K backers wanted to wait a year+ back then? Cause I never heard anyone saying they’d wait. 8KX backers are pretty much stuck waiting.
There were plenty of topics on this back then because the 5k+ and the 8k were so close in performance. Many 8k backers expressed that they would wait for a better HMD ~ 8k+ were as many wanted it right away. Mixed bag. The issue is that the option to wait wasn’t presented. I’m sure many backers would have waited if pimax announced the 8k+ was coming.
I know I would have. But they just started throwing them out the door. So quickly that some people wanting to switch didn’t know if pimax had, cables were untested, and dead pixels got through and of course the wonderful cracking issue which is still apparently a thing.
It wasn’t pointless. It got us the 8K nearly 1 year sooner.
Was it exactly what was promised? No. But it’s still a good headset and (seriously) better than I was expecting from a Kickstarter and a small company in China.
Yeah they should have offered the option to wait for better panels with upscaler. It was possible because it was in development back then. VoodooDe 8k+ prototype is 4 months old and i got my 8k about 5 month ago.
