If there was anything special about the headset, besides surprise low price, they would have mentioned it I believe.

Yes I miss read it , I thought it was was the 8k+ shipping date .
Well true but If it’s better than my 5K+, which it should be without a doubt, then I will be very happy because currently the 5K+ is my favorite headset out of all of the ones I own! I have also been speaking to Martin directly and BTW I have known him since before his days here with Pimax… I trust him to be a reliable source of information regarding this headset as he is actively testing it and when he tells me it is the best on the market I tend to believe him! Either way, I will have one on my head for multiple days at CES and that will be here in the blink of an eye so not much longer now! []-)

I think the FOV of the Artisan is the same as the 5k+ @ 120hz iun the largest FOV setting. But because the headset is designed around that FOV with different displays it might be a better experience.
This headset will only have a chance if it costs 349 $ or less.
Without audio, without comfortable headstrap, without the excellent quality of the Index, this VR will only have a chance if it is cheap!

I do agree that the sudden “launch” of Artisan is confusing. Not my idea and nothing I was aware of. It was planned, by all of us, for a launch during CES with one demo unit in one of our 5 stations of the booth. Im still figuring out why this got changed.
However, Travis @Flinnt, you do not seem to understand much about what Pimax has (or has not) accomplished during the “last 2 years”. There are 3 VR headset models (8K, 5K+, 5KXR) that launched since a year ago. Now, 3 more are coming (8KX, 8K+ and Artisan). Yeah the 8KX got delayed, but I can hint you that the delay will be much shorter than announced (more info coming before CES).
Now, regarding “the things that have been available forever”
- The hand tracking is a product from Leap Motion/Ultrahaptics which is now called UltraLeap. The delay was not on our side, and we could not affect it. Things are moving forward very fast now, and we wont wait much longer.
- The basestations are made by Valve. We are not allowed to make our own. It took us forever to get a deal, and the permission to sell them as a third-party. Same for the controllers.

There are foldable/bendable 4K OLED panels as well. Maybe even 8K. That doesnt mean we can automatically put them into a Pimax.

There are fundamental specs, yet not revealed, which separates this unit from Index. And nobody has told you anything about the audio.

Strange that nobody ask why it’s call Artisan? normally it’s reserve to products in the applied art technology and Design . Would it by some kind of ‘large’ FOV reverb with OLED panels and inside tracking used for art design / CAD…

Are the panels moving inside Index when adjusting an IPD? I believe Pimax must account for some margin for an IPD adjustment and cannot utilize the panel full horizontal resolution.
I guess by “inside-out tracking” you mean just 3DOF gyro+accelerometer tracking? I doubt Pimax would be capable of 6DOF camera tracking (Oculus style), besides there are no cameras visible on the ad.
On the side note: Lighthouse tracking is also “inside-out” - technically. The only “outside-in” tracking is the Oculus “Constellation” tracking (though now, only for the controllers, the headset is already inside-out too) .

That would just be standard 3dof, so I guess it means something more. Maybe the hand tracking module can be made to do in-out tracking or there’s a new clip-on module for all headsets to use? That would be neat.
When you think about it is it really a big upgrade? Can you honestly see the difference right away? I don’t see any sde on my 5k and no distortion. Why buy the 8kx when I’m happy with my 5k plus. Can you honestly say it night and day between the 2? I doubt it
If you don’t see any sde, then it is out of focus, the SDE is clearly there and easily seen.
