Pimax ARTISAN Discussion (Entry Level Headset)

I think if artisan had aspherical lenses tailored to its 140 degrees, that would be too good to be true, and they would need to upgrade the lenses on the X too.

yeah but the fov on that deer woukd be incompatible. unless that version is specifically for deer-like fov.

great another new hmd to delay.

Well the only new product is the 8k+ so far.

The Pro, you say? Yes, HTC did say right away, when they announced it, that the screens in that were a bit smaller than those in the vanilla Vive, so the FOV (given the lenses infuriatingly remained the exact same irritating ones as in the old model) should indeed be a bit smaller. I doubt we’re talking 20° though, but since even getting 100 is really hard to begin with… :7

Striking off onto a side track, from that… Doc_Ok, just the other week, put together a new camera test rig, and calibrated it, and published an evaluation he made using it, of the PlaystationVR (which sounds really appealing next to the Vive). ( Field of View and Resolution of the PlayStation VR Headset | Doc-Ok.org )

That occurs to me to present an excellent renewed (the subject has been broached before) opportunity to send the guy a selection of Pimaxes for putting through their paces, if he’d be interested, and maybe get some educated feedback in return.

Fat chance, of course, but: @PimaxUSA ? :7

Artisan… Would it have inside-out tracking?

Well we know there are some in the West whom have been overzealous with release dates. Remember pitool 106 in February or new controller designs at GDC/GTC?

the difference is that they told us that they were development kits And they were on time.

if oculus pulled half the crap that pimax is doing now and i was still waiting for my original pledge 2 years after i’d be pissed. And VR would have died.

who knows maybe oculus would be pimax if Facebook hadn’t bought them. Come on Razer buy pimax already.

On a serious note though, i thought this was a poorly thought out Christmas ad for the 5k+. But then I saw this.

Im so shocked right now… ive already purchased the 8kx but this move …I’m seriously considering for the first time on refunding. I think my 5k+ is good enough…I should do what mike from VROasis suggested and cash my chips out while I still can.

what the hell? why here now? what it’s the secret message?

I get it. Its because pimax is spinning in circles.

omg that is so perfect. you could put that ad on any of their products at this point. maybe change their logo to a question mark as well.

The pimax employees in this thread can try and spin this however they want but the fact of the matter is announcing a second new headset when you have not delivered on ANY kickstarter awards or even have finished delivering the headsets does nothing but further drag pimax’s name through the mud. This reflects terribly on them. Pimax is a joke in the vr community throwing headsets out their door every couple of months.

Cant wait for the Artisan 8k and the Artisan 8kx announcement here in a couple of months.

Ummm… what is the point in this? pimax releases yet another HMD but stll not a complete solution. It surely can’t complete with anything by Oculus due to lack of tracking and controllers, and to make this work with Steam, you’re going to need to shell out for lighthouses and index controllers …

Two years on and I am still unable to use the 5k+ headset that I’ve paid for … and they keep releasing new product … #baffled

Now, my friend, without any offense intended, but THAT remains to be seen and the pudding served.

They have been chasing their own tail since day one replacing one model with the next they think (!) they can do better without even getting something trivial as the perscription frame, leave alone the MAS out of the door (which hugely affects UX on their current product line and thus market acceptance, btw.) or 3rd party products shipped.

I dare say from what I have been following ANY task they are taking on delays EVERYTHING they have in their pipeline. They stated even communicating with their user base in the indicated way would delay things so they rather preferred not to and focus on engineering instead. I cant see any kind of modern workflow management behind what’s happening and based on your own words they have even no control over their marketing. They surely start losing me and others as customers now.

Yeah another headset announcement ? How about finishing and shipping all current commitments before announcing another product . Now there will be even more confusion and as a result of that more support tickets from customers wanting to change . They keep announcing new products but nothing is shipping .

Maybe even a full new set of upgrade programs!

I hold it about equally likely that Pimax may have sourced some 1600p 8:9 screens (available in pairs, fed from an often included shared driver board), if not even the exact same ones as in the Valve Index, and turned the screens sideways, for 9:8 landscape orientation; And that they might simply have taken the 5k+ otherwise unaltered, and artificially limited the FOV in firmware.

Actually, the latter is probably more likely, and probably not in the least higher in BOM – especially if one assume that the former would likely either necessitate a modified mounting frame that moves the screens along with the lenses, when changing IPD, or the further cost saving measure of eliminating IPD adjustment altogether, like many other cheaper headsets.

Does someone really think that PIMAX without ARTISAN would get to Eye Tracking, Wireless Module, Controllers and anything else faster?

I don’t know the ARTISAN specs, but it seems to me something familiar, a subset of what they have already done, nothing to invent.

Creating something new is a whole other story, it doesn’t directly depend on the number of people employed, but on the solutions available. If you already have engineers on a project, they’ll be the ones that will do the job. Adding random people is useless as adding random developers to software development

just spitballing but my guess is that artisan is basically 8K-X’s and 8K+'s, maybe even old 8K components that did not make the cut for those higher tier devices, so they are running a little less than 1800p at 120hz at what I assume will be a discount.

I estimated that the older parts (bridge chips) could handle 1800p within their bandwidth for a long while. all in all, its a plus. Here is hoping the lenses are optimized for that resolution and FOV.

This could be the P4K 2.0 that we hypothesized about long ago, huh @Heliosurge? @SweViver?

I don’t know. But seems likely. As @mmorselli said no real new resources needed. And as @jojon said they may have had a deal on screens.

Now add in newer bridge chips. To re use old materials not used in current production makes good sense. Now with the smaller panels no need to artificially limit the FoV. Simple shrink the viewport. As most say Normal FoV has very little distortion. Now if priced low enough. Opens pimax to a more affordable crowd. And current wireless tech out there would support easy.

We don’t know when they are aiming for release. But we do know they were working on a p4k revision in there spare time during time after KS & b4 the KS.

Yes, I actually do, because their team is way too small to do all this in parallel. Let’s look at the MAS - no rocket science. Give me 3 people and 6 months and I’ll be in preroduction, make it 5 and a year and it’s there with flying colors. Now where are we 3 years after campaign start? Simply because they don’t have the human ressources.

Then, and thats the most imprtant point: carefully watch Sebastians video and follow SweVivers comments. Its almost save to predict this ones IS an entry level headset but - and as such it makes absolute sense - seem to come with inside out tracking presumably basic controllers (most likely something Nolo style) AND he hinted it not to come with the standard strap, so it just must be the full blown MAS unless they design another one, god forbid… So put some salt on my hat and I’ll eat it - the very team that should take care of the Sword controllers with maximum focus are on that, too. It’s also a different housing, so again, how many CAD designers to they employ, how many run production samples, design the molds etc… They have already announced the MAS to ship as evaluation sammples end of January, so a respin already taken as given. Sorry, this whole thing just screams delay all over.
