Jup… ROG Strix OC Edition.
Smaller pixels will allow the distortion correction to potentially be more fine-grained, and precise, improving both the small-scale distortion overall, chromatic abberration compensation, and depth perception at a greater range.
They should however have zero impact on the large-scale distortions, which are what people usually complain about, and the improvements mentioned above are only if the screens receive the full rendered 2160p resolution from piserver (even if the game frames have been undersampled, the barrel distortion will still benefit from the improved screen resolution, if it renders to it), leaving the 8k+ not benefitting from any of that, over the 8k/5k - only the 8kX does.
As for blockiness… Seems to me that the dot pitch difference between the 8k and 5k+ is infinitessimal. The blocks may be somewhat different in appearance (not size), and one may find either more or less pleasant to the eye than the other, but in terms of effective resolution, the two headset models should be almost identical. :7
The 5k+ are more visible to me in terms of size. The 8k appears to be approximately a 1/3 smaller. The Pixel size is still smaller than the 5k+. But might also be an effect of the 8k having better Color temp.
I seriously believe that is a bit of an optical illusion, which would work something like this:
So you see this bright green subpixel, and then the next green subpixel over; Half a step to the right, and half a step down, but you only register either of these two cardinal direction distances, instead of the actual centre-to-centre distance to the closest neighbouring green subpixel, which runs diagonally, subconsciously giving the checkerboard-y layout the “benefit” of an actual full-RGB orthogonal matrix one, as if there had actually been a green subpixel in both of those half-step slots directly to the right and directly down, and therefore overestimating the resolution by the square root of two. (EDIT: …in which case, turning either device 45°, should make it appear much closer to the other.)
I could also be mistaken on the exact layout, but the above makes some degree of logical sense.
Well as I am not Clark Kent I only see Pixels directly opposed to seeing a jumbled mess of 3 colored sub pixels.
By res the 8k still has smaller pixels just not filled as nicely as an RGB stripe or Rainbow.
I have been wondering that, too.
One guess could be that the presumed tracking module could be a Windows Mixed Reality device, which would make it possible to use WMR controllers.
Another that the tracking cameras could also do bare hand tracking á la Oculus Quest – Oculus are not the only ones that have been working on that by any means - the HoloLens and most other AR glasses have had it in some capacity for ages… :7
Looks like the Artisan headset isn’t that secret anymore:

How can it be “140FOV VR PC headsets Dual 2560x1440p RGB LCD” (title) and “Resolution: 2 x 1600x1440” at the same time…?
Oh and SDE is “almost no”, so “yes”?
So @Pimel and me were right about the price.
I guess that the title is just a copy-paste typo (not uncommon on aliexpress), read the spec further below. Now what I found interesting is that shipping (to Czechia) is only 45€, and apparently you can also buy replacement facepad for the old models for 18€ only (and free shipping) and even a Comfort Kit for 45€ (and free shipping).
EDIT: the tracking specified there is SteamVR LHs though, so it is not clear if the spec. is up to date.
If I ever was in market for such things, I would probably order from aliexpress rather than from Pimax as with aliexpress you got a buyer’s protection as well, and if the seller does not ship the goods in certain time you can request a refund.
Perhaps it’s like the 5K+ and 8K, the visible pixels are less than the panel res (to allow for IPD adjustment).
Yes well about the SDE, I will be the only one judge.
But the price! If it is the right one…it is a good one !
The specs are quite similar to the 5K+. I wonder where they cut corners. Perhaps the screen isn’t as good? Of course it could be the same hardware as the 5K+, but with an artificial limit in the drivers, firmware, or PiTool.
At a guess? Smaller Panels as 1600×1440 is not a 16:9 aspect ratio so smaller viewport than 5k+ & 8k. Hence cap of 140 Horizintal FoV.
Yes, as @Heliosurge said, it might be smallers panels and also smaller lenses.
Ah, then you think the “2560x1440” in the title is a typo. That could certainly be the reason it’s cheaper.
Here it shows 2x 1600x1440
Fun thing here, 8k+ almost no sde and 8kX no sde…But they are the same panels ^^
True but likely a misprint. But either way they’d need/want to physically mask unused screen area to avoid DK grey blacks that a soft mask would likely leave.
Where do you got that picture from?
