So this YouTuber cannot get headset above 75Hz with a 2080 Ti with a bunch of apps, and reports distortion even in Potato setting (come on, Pimax has had best lenses with widest aperture since the 5k+).
I don’t need to do more than skim through this to despair that people who supposedly review such things semi-professionally for the YouTube masses are so casual they can’t even competently figure out how things work. Like having written software, or built an op-amp, or used ‘gdb’, should be things people understood before having a privileged position in a technology field.
All the more so when communicating with the public.
Hey everyone, that is really amazing actually. Pimax COO directly working with new users to make sure things work well for them, given issues that are often not at all on Pimax (ie. SteamVR). That is actually really amazing.
All the more so that PimaxUSA can say it’s 1% of the job. Those kind of setup calls are only easy when the person doing them actually knows how things work. @PimaxUSA You should be proud of that.
Well an official community guide as many whom need the Mic will benefit. If new customers are guided to things like this it may help improve pimax’s footing in the consumer space. Though many will still say it shouldn’t require a community fix like this out of the box at this price point. On that Matteo and others are absolutely correct.
Included Audio might be a highlight; though if they had at least the 3 complete MAS module available with a recommendations for each option, Highlighting DMAS module as for best recommended experience. It wouldn’t be so bad. The DMAS hardware is said to be mostly ready but the usb audio driver is said to be holding it back it seems. Which would make sense if your fixing the usb audio driver; that they should fix both Audio out and Audio In(Mic).
Of course ‘regular people’ should review VR headsets. Professional reviewers are also needed though, to tell people what is possible if they want to put in the effort, and maybe offer some advice for others to achieve similar goals.
Unfortunately, just pretending to be competent enough to say ‘this sucks’ is apparently too much easier than all of that. Unfortunately, such pretentiousness is deeply misleading!
Also, yeah, a high degree of technological competence is a prerequisite for a VR headset. Sorry, but we are all EARLY ADOPTERS, even of the Quest (which has its own problems). That, or the money, or the connections, to get help from someone at the nearest VR arcade, makerspace, etc.
Mmmm … I would suggest several people on this forum have ‘a high degree of technical competence’ but may still have encountered some of the problems described in the review. To dismiss them with ‘so casual they can’t even competently figure out how things work’ - is the epitome of pretentiousness
Well we know @OlivierJT conducted a professional technical review when the headsets first launched. Unfortunately the headset is not technically accurate enough for his project(just as per Xunshu statement Wide FoV comes with compromises).
All Pimax headset are meant to be Consumer grade. If you want pro grade you get the Xtal.
In the months i had both the 5k+ and the Index I had many of the problem the OPs review stated. So two years later the same problems persist. This is why Pimax need to get real and stop the denial. Or do we wait for another manufacturer who takes all the plus points of the Pimax and all the plus points of the Index and puts them together? Is this going to come from Apple next year? Valve? Even Oculus?
Who will Pimax blame then when they’ve blown over $40million and got nowhere? Internet trolls?
I don’t mind companies who get things wrong. I backed the Kickstarter and crossed my fingers. I routed for Pimax to be a success. But when you hear the denial over and over what can I guy on the internet do even when he wants to help Pimax produce a better product but gets ignored?
Don’t people at Pimax ask why people are buying Indexes, G2’s and Quests? Or do they kick back and laugh at such deluded fools?
Why would a VR headset reviewer need to use GDB exactly? I mean of course, when using a Pimax headset it’s a good feature if you know how to debug software But other than that i really don’t see why a VR headset reviewer would need that.
Actually when you buy high priced headsets like the Xtal your paying for in part high level tech support. The Xtals unfortunately even have a number of flaws other than price that do not make it a consumer friendly headset. In the high price zone the StarVR is more consumer friendly than Xtal in terms of weight and comfort(of course you sacrifice Resolution which is curious why they downgraded the res so much from previous model).
Xunshu was honest on that with her Statement that High FoV headsets come with compromises. Even Oculus has decreased the FoV from original advertised capabilities.
However I do think 140 (Pinax Normal) wide is quite doable as Wearality Sky had 150 Advertised wide FoV without Canting.
It is curious why non of the other players seem interested in pushing the FoV boundaries even by a small 10 to 15° wider than 120 wide. It was really disappointing with the Valve Index horizontal FoV being low; when you consider there VR DeV kits that never took off were spec’d. For up to 130(unless they were intending diagonal.
And to be clear the Index is no where near 130 wide as people deceived themselves to presume with the Eye Relief giving up to 20° perceived more FoV compared to other headsets.
Ease of use and price(at least with Quest 2 on price, though g2 is a complete set so price as well). Both are easier to setup then a a Steamvr tracked headset.
As for the 3rd reason for all 3? Known brands vs a new comer.
Pimax Technology was established in 2014 and consists of a group of engineers with many years of work experience in the VR/AR field. In 2016 its first product was released.
I mean they’ve been at it almost as long as anyone else.
At least ideally though, we do not claim that such things as >75Hz with an RTX 2080 Ti cannot be done with an unreasonably large variety of VR apps. That’s just false, and any reasonable amount of experience with other VR headsets should have been enough to know better.
Always easier to dismiss than to actually investigate.
@PimaxUSA By your continued silence on the supposed IPD setup “quick fix” solutions you’ve referred to and on the issue of panel misalignments in Pimax headsets, is it fair to now assume that there is no IPD setup guide which you keep alluding to, and that panel misalignment is still indeed an ongoing issue in Pimax headsets and Pimax has no plans to fix it? Silence is confirmation of the implied.
So many people have now asked you respectfully and nicely about it and you just continue to ignore them, it really doesn’t reflect well on you or on your company.
Isn’t this exactly how the Wearality headset sold to Lockheed martin managed to achieve 180-200 degrees of fov? It looks like the lenses and render were an enlarged 120 fov lense and display which allows for 180-200 degrees of perceived fov, with only 2 rendering viewports instead of up to 4 like StarVR can use.
Pimax is still a new comer when it comes to “known brands” though. Sure they’ve been doing VR for almost as long as the other three, but they have no where near the name brand recognition of a Valve, Facebook or HP.
An official Pimax IPD Setup guide should strongly be considered. It should have detailed information on Horizontal and Vertical adjustments when using Pitool, Pimax Experience and 3rd party software.
I’ve owned the 8K X for a few months now and struggled to overcome “double vision” which I still haven’t dealt with and setting up a Valve 2.0 Base Station which also has tracking issues and the jitters sometimes. I also have a motion simulator with produces EMI and affects the hmd while being touched in certain spots.
I think the community will have to end up providing the support needed through forums such as this due to @PimaxUSA@PimaxVR@PimaxQuorra reluctance to provide hard pdf documentation or detailed videos for issues like I’ve described above for Noobs like me.
Facebook had no brand recognition when they launched either. Look at them now. Come on stop making excuses for a company that lacks direction and has no morals.
Trust me, the last thing I would do is make excuses for Pimax. Their issues are well known and well documented at this point.
Still doesn’t change the fact that they don’t have the brand recognition of the others. And when I’m talking about Facebook brand recognition, I’m talking about them as a company in general, not specifically about their VR efforts.
