HTC is back! Vive pro 2 with 2.5k * 2.5k per eye @ 120 hz

Depends on the scale you measure “best” by.

If best=more pixels sure.

if best = $/pixel then Quest 2

if best = FOV xtal

if best = $/FOV then Pimax

if best = mainstream acceptance then Quest 2

I hope not. I notice thrillseeker tried to make that happen in his last video. I’d prefer something that conveyed pixel density.

Let’s save megapixels for descriptions of phone cameras

Well then at least ditch the misleading k factor.

Okay i ordered the vive pro 2,now i hope its beats or has the same great screens as the hp reverb g2 but with a little bigger field off view…And ofcourse the lighthouse tracking what the g2 doesnt have…

Awesome! In a few weeks we’ll know if it really beats the G2 but I’d be highly surprised if it wouldn’t. Lighthouse tracking, reliability, bit higher FOV and resolution and better comfort, seems like a winner. And 120 hz is nice, I always used my index at 120 hz too (didn’t see any difference with 144, but did see an improvement over 90).

Also what I like about all this is that HTC is now forcing the hands of others. I’m pretty sure that if the others don’t release something competing soon, then HTC is going to gain back a lot of market share. So I’m hoping this makes for example Valve realize they need to hurry up with releasing even a better headset

@Djonko Good news!

The field off view is indeed 120 horizontal…!

That sounds good. Now somebody just need to field the related question: “…and what is the stereo overlap?”. :7

And lenses that have a sweet spot larger than 5mm.

Not a high bar, I’m pretty sure even the deca gear is going to trounce the G2

My biggest problem with the G2 is that it still has that WMR stench.

Also what i forgot to mention.

While i now use the 8kx again at the moment,i dont think the htc vive pro 2 will beat the G2 in glare or godrays… The pimax 8kx has also alot more glare then the hp reverb g2… Lets hope htc will fix that with their vive pro 2 and put it on the same level as the G2(here its almost gone)

HTC has finally achieved Small FOV mode on the Pimax. Made a quick video on it:

By the way, did anyone here get the $50 discount code working?

I received my code after few hours. It’s working, 50$ off in checkout.

Probably because you live in the U.S

@NextGenVR check your PM

especially with increased wireless resolution , hope it’s easy to reconnect the regular display cable for full res though
I still use the vive pro with wireless a hell of a lot despite having the g2
But why no reviews pre ordering becomes a £700 gamble

Pro 2 with probably look similar to the G2 but with 20% increased vert and Horizontal resolution
Sort of what the 5k+ should have been

Not everyone seems convinced

Hehe, that guy really is a hater. “it’s probably just like my Vive Pro so I don’t like it”, LOL. Only point he made I agree to is that the Vive Pro runs hot. But we still have to see if that goes for this new headset too. Hating it already because you THINK it’s going to run hot, just makes no sense if you ask me.

If FoV is your only parameter then better stick with Pimax of course. I’m buying this headset because I think/hope that:

  1. Comfort is going to be (much) better than the Pimax. Like just said I agree that the Vive Pro ran hot, but apart from that it was just the most comfortable headset I’ve ever used.
  2. Audio will be better. Enough said
  3. Will be distortion free just like all other HTC headsets
  4. Less SDE/higher resolution than the 8k-X. The G2 is already a good step up from the 8k-X here and this should be even better
  5. Higher refresh rate. 90 hz of the 8k-x is quite good but I always ran my index at 120, for me that was the sweet spot of refresh rates and an improvement over 90.
  6. HOPEFULLY the colors will be better but this is of course at this moment the biggest unknown. They could even be worse than the 8k-X, which would be a real bummer.
  7. No headset wobble. This really is one of the biggest downsides for me using the 8k-X. Because it’s so wide, inertia is an important factor and Pimax really didn’t think much about this when designing the headset.

The other big unknown but quite important factor will of course be godray’s … The 8k-X is quite good here. If this headset would have substantial godray’s then that definitely would be a big bummer.

So at this point we’ll just have to wait and see how it stacks up to other headsets.

It does indeed seem to be a winner. Though not really much to be likely noticed the ppd will be about 1ppd less than g2 and 8kX. So Clarity should be very similar close to g2/8kX.

With Square panels this suggests vertical and horizontal FoV should both be 120.

So an overall increase over the Index making this indeed an index Killer and much more of a base competitor to pimax by matching small FoV (horizontal) and if correct beating all consumer headsets atm in vertical FoV. (Advert Full 120 FoV likely = 120°×120°).

This honestly should improve immersion a lot.

The only hurdle maybe is some of the issues both pimax and hp are having with possible bandwidth limitations. But who knows.
