Thanks for your review, really appreciate it!
How’s the sweetspot compared to the 8KX and G2?
Better than the 8KX about on par with the G2. But I didn’t have an issues with the g2 sweet spot as others have.
I don’t have the x to compare against directly but in Vive you only have 3 brightness options and they don’t vary by that much. Obviously on the x you have better control over the backlight. I’d say it’s as bright as the index for sure as Idot see a discernable difference going back and forth.
Do you have the Index in hand to test. Because the Index is quite bright
Awesome, good to see there are actual brightness settings!
This did the trick thx.
Tonight i am gonne test the unit!
Really well done review by Sebastian. Sectioned out nicely and I appreciate that in each section he compared the aspect with what he considers the benchmark. Demonstration of the fov mod was well done so users can quickly get an a/b.
Hopefully he uses this format going forward and keeps the hype down and focuses on data driven facts which he did a great job of here.
just to put some thoughts on why all the reviews about HTC bugged me (sorry but I just want to share this :DD)
Before having many HMDs I was relying on the reviews like this to understand key features of products, for sure I used multiple sources & tried to get an average experienced feedback. But the point is that I always treated it as VR reviews made by VR enthusiasts, not a common product review like a new iphone 12 pro by average Joe, and that’s very important. I believe Im not the one who is confused with all those reports. Because those as was turned out are lazy reports, done by ppl who has no passion/lost it to VR & just review it as a phone. IMO enthusiast VR review should be something like a video that describes all cons/pros but also lets you know what potential a device has, how it can be performed especially with low efforts like the foam swap.
After seeing all that stuff when people refuse to install new firmware, doom the Pro due only to that thick foam & constantly neglecting all the pros the HMD has, don’t want to setup resolution properly or miss it by some reason & review & compare clarity with not native res. I just got “WOW, how that could be, how could I rely on those reviews”
I didn’t anyway want to hurt somebody or force them to behave some other way, but realising that you yourself didn’t know the fact how the reviews are done & couldn’t check it yourself without having a HMD unit was like a cold shower. Ben despite testing it with standard foam did very good points about the HTC VP2 - he said that eye relief is bad & doesn’t let you to put your eyes close & there is big room to get it closer & get 120 FOV, so that was objective in my opinion & I may consider it’s as a good review even if it doesn’t tell much about potential of this explicit device (as you need to test it with crucial changes to make a truly enthusiast VR device review).
I understand that youtubers point to average consumer & try to address audience more widely, but they constantly told bla bla bla Im a VR enthusiast & I fall in love with VR, so it somehow makes you think that what they experience (apart of physiological differences) will be your experience as they try to max out the experience & fully utilise the device (not by soldering new chips or by changing displays) but by doing some minor, almost effortless adjustments that really drastically change the experience. But again, just wow. At least it really shows some reasons why HTC failed so big times with HTC Pro & has so small market share. It’s not the price (it plays a big role but I believe it’s not the main one). People spend money to buy index full kits (1000$) , buy 8kx 1300$ for HMD only, buy quest 1 for 400$ then DAS for 150 + battery for 100 + phones for 100 etc etc & now they spent 850$ but didn’t note it. But that overall HTC initial reviews & reputation just kill them. On Amazon for VP1 order ppl were very satisfied with the VP1 experience, by that time there were lot of reports about hardware failures & guarantee treatments problems, but the hardware experience itself was very positive. But those are minor % of users who went further & bought the HMD. As I said I didn’t buy the HMD until 2020 myself because of very bad reviews from all the sources (Linus, other guys - resolution bump is minor, no worth to upgrade, but it was index level quality HMD for that time & still is).
Oh wow, very well said sir, exactly my thoughts!!! It’s like these ‘enthusiasts’ reviewers are not interested to find out if you can get a good VR experience. Which is all I want to know of course. No, they just want to stab down a headset because the foam is too thick and they refuse to try it with a different foam. Like, how does that even help me? Luckily there are reviewers like Sebastian and tweakers.net otherwise we still wouldn’t have known if this is an interesting headset for us
Did somebody received tracking number from the Vive US website?
My local store B&H got pro 2 in stock and offers free delivery for tomorrow.
i did preorder on HTC off site with USA address 3 days after release & still don’t have any notifications, I know some ppl got their preorders shifted by 2 monts (e.g. Thrillsicker’s one is shifted). So no any clue here.
Regarding reviews, I think some of the negativity and stubbornness is because we don’t have a “perfect” headset yet. That plus the extra software needed for the headset, which no one asked for, is a bit annoying too.
Ordered on the 13th and it says order submitted and it seems they took my money, no tracking…I also see B&H for delivery for tomorrow, heh. No $50 coupon though. Also, Amazon has it for an extra $300, wtf.
On amazon it’s being sold by ‘Aventis System’ some 3rd party store, not HTC. They are scalpers.
Well If I won’t get tracking till tomorrow I’ll cancel my order and pickup pro 2 in B&H store.
I got mine for Adorama in the US…You could get it as soon as tomorrow if you do next day shipping. Fyi.
It’s still available to do pickup tomorrow but I’m waiting for vive website because of coupon. I’m ok to wait 2 days and save $50. But I’m not ok waiting a week or more
But but but they replaced the foam!!! That’s an invalid review then!! Hehe.
Glad to see these guys do a good review, thanks for posting
Can’t wait for your review. Please tell us is Motion Smoothing working correctly because I’ve read there is a big problem with it.
I am sure you would agree by now hmd manufacturers should include 2 thickness of foams to get a wider audience without needing to purchase extras. In this case Seb demonstrates as have others they would have had a better open box reviews.
