I tried both and they feel about the same to me.
I’m just leaving it at 1.0 now and waiting for the next Pitool.

Sure, but the fact is that the default setting is too low for wide fov headsets. 16k is for most practical purposes the same as removing the cap. If you prefer to set the cap smaller that is up to you.
In any case we can assume that if you’re in there messing with that setting you also know enough to not bother valve support if you manage to turn your game into slideshows.
In the end that is why the cap is there, to protect valve from users that turns their own experience into crap and flood the forums and their support with complaints.
I want to address my impressions of the ‘WOW factor’ with more up to date impressions.
The 8KX is a headset that can be ‘WOWed’ only in retrospect. Just like having a 2020 android phone vs a 2010 android phone. You are so used to the features you have you think that is how it should be from the beginning. Only when you have one side by side you know the massive difference between them.
In regards to the SMAS, I won’t praise the sound quality or whatever but it does have one advantage, you don’t notice it exist.
I’ve tried potato FOV, never again, Scuba mask, this is me being 100% honest I would never ever ever use it even if it could somehow do 200hz I won’t use it.
I somewhat agree with @RobCram there aren’t really enough ‘High Quality’ Assets to show off in VR. I think Elite is about it for me so far. Trying virtual desktop with MGSV godamn that game looks good in terms of it’s assets.
I think SDE has the dumb VHS filter where even though the image is absolutely terrible your brain fills in some of the blanks for you. Whereas if you watch Bluray you can tell the flaws of the image quality far more easily. That seems to be applying to me as I adjust.
VR games really need far more fidelity.
Haha so far most of your review is
Pimax 8kX its so good you wont even notice it
This is one area I really want to know about , playing pancake games in VD. Would you say that this has finally gotten to the fidelity level where there is no more advantage to playing on my 4k tv?
Or is it at least equivalent to playing on a 1080p tv?
In terms of resolution when reading text in notepad how much farther away can you place the virtual screen and still read clearly size 12px Arial Font?
I would say that Pancakes games at least to me when rendered at native 4K are about somewhere inbetween 1080p and native 4K. I need to test more games but I know it definitely looks great. Tbh I find Pancake games better looking that watching video. Watching video I can still see some flaws, with games its noticeably harder like really quite hard.
Honestly I wonder what is a fair test for text because text on my monitor is ‘pretty big’, I’m using a 4K monitor.
In terms of text, I’d say for the text to be readable, the ‘Bolder’ the text is, the easier it is to read. It’s definitely readable on the 8KX but Black or White text on the appropriate background is far easier to read than small grey text.
I’ve tried No Man’s Sky. That game even on Graphics all on ‘Standard’ for performance reasons looks pretty good, it’s best looking when you’re in space going fast. I’ve also tried skyrim VR. I will say that once you break past, it’s odd things look more ‘cartoony’ to you because you no longer have that vaseline or whatever filter protecting you from seeing stuff.
Hmmm, good to hear, I wonder if you could do the Real-o-virtual tests see what the results are?
Im guessing Vorpx works? Do you have it? I havent seen anyone with the X comment on Virpx support.
Considering the higher resolution. I will cry if Vorpx doesn’t work.
I don’t have Vorpx sadly. I remember the guy saying stuff like he doesn’t want to support Pimax (Could be wrong) and that’s why i didn’t get it cause I was using Pimax 4K at the moment.
I’m here and I’m clicking their latest Unreal Engine and it brings me to https://knob2001.itch.io/test-fov-rv-testsglare-readbility-lens which is a dead link
Should work:
“vorpX now officially supports Pimax 5K/8K headsets (vorpX 19.1.1 and above)”
I know the developer, I’ll check.
Here in the forum you have an entry with the links.
And the link to the Itch.io store.
Nice to see it finally got to your door! And thanks for the impressions!
The lens cloth was in a small pocket of the cartridge in the 8k+. I thing also a short how to and some pimax imfos where in there also
I only saw it when I already decided to park the box, now actually near my pc as the resting place for the 8k+.
Man I’m starting excited for my 8kx delivery. I ve been quite happy with 5k+ after having Vive. No problems at all. My son just graduated college and he is getting.my 5k+. I think he might be more antsy then me…lol
Me too. I had a bad cable and numerous cracks, but I’ve really enjoyed my 8K.
Since I don’t have kids, I either upgrade my wife’s PC or sell/give my old components to friends. My best friend’s adult son is likely going to get my 2080 at a serious discount. I might even just give it to him, since he’s been playing co-op games with me and his father. I’d like to encourage that, since he’s much better than me, which really helps us as a team. Plus, he’s fun to play with and has resurrected me more times than I’d care to admit.
I hear you Neal. I older 58. I m iracer mostly. Joined new league this year and payed forward t300 wheel and pedals… my original Vive hmd… fanatic v1 pedals and rs wheel…some younger racers that don’t have means to even have forcefeed back wheel…I still remember being young and broke…if all that makes sense?
This is why I grow weary of folk on here proclaiming they are Reverb G2 converts and waving goodbye to Pimax 8K-X before they even used it!
It seems so unlikely someone adjusted to 170 FOV (5K+/8K owners) would return to 114 FOV, just to protest against Pimax’s mistakes, knowing full well VR immersion is much worse in small FOV.
People are free to do what they wish, but still, to me it’s a bizarre claim of theirs.
I’m receiving my 8K-X next week and excited as nearly 3 years ago is a long time to finally see a finished project.
I sold my GPU though, so I’ll have to wait a few months to use my headset, unless I try and find a cheap GTX 1070 just to turn it on and see if the display works etc.
I agree!.. too much negative…so much positive to be had
@generic please try “the lab” from Valve.
I have it and used Vorpx with the 8kX.
All Pimax Kickstarter backers of 5K, 5K+ 8K, received their headsets before 2019 I believe.
I think I received my replacement 8K loaner in late 2018.
That might be how Pimax users adjusted to 170 FOV?
Does anyone else notice ‘Screeniness’(I need a word for it) I don’t see SDE as much as I see an artifact from a screen image. It’s not as bad as it sounds you notice it on solid color light backgrounds. I’ve noticed this on my monitor and my phones but I guess VR requires you to zoom in so much closer that you can see it closer.
Maybe it’s my eyes but try going in close to a solid color white background. The white has some micro elements of other colors in it. It’s not solid white IRL. I’m not knocking the 8KX. I just want to bring up an observation I see @mr.uu I’m curious if you see it or is it just me?
I am gestimating I would receive everything in August (maybe not dmas) , you could come over my place to try it out then David if you like.
Navi was just wondering if you sold your gpu s offset cost of new gpu coming out soon. ( Big Navi)
