First Impressions of the X from a person that doesn't care about color and doesn't see distortion from the 5K+

That sounds like either minor mura or some dead pixels. Do they always show up in the same area?

@generic
I believe what you are seeing is the pattern of grainyness like what was in the 5k+ with the black dots. Seems every hmd has something similar. The index has black dots but not as bad as 5k+. For me once I have gotten used to the headset and I’m just using it and not trying to look for every little detail I don’t see it anymore. I have 8k+ waiting on the x.

I think there are 2 different 5k+ panels, first 5k+ I had had super obvious black dots on red color, 2nd 5k+ had no dots I could notice.

It’s not dead pixels I see it everywhere on my phone, my 4K TN panel monitor. It’s regardless of the position and always linked to color.

I’m wondering if it’s Mura but I need more people to get the X to confirm because it might just be my eyes being sensitive to thing.

If it’s white background, I can always tell I’m looking at a screen when I’m close. When there is a game playing and other colors in the mix it’s very very subtle. If it’s black background this effect is non-existent.

@quanentanglement luckily I do not see Black Dots on the 8KX. Can confirm from an OG 5K+ 202 owner there is no black dots.

This effect is very subtle. On a 4K monitor at usual monitor distance you don’t notice it all. But if you go in close you notice it. I notice it because on the X you’re far closer than you usually are for screen distance. It’s not an effect you notice in games. Although I do see some Chromatic Aberration Maybe it’s that but for whatever reason I can see it on White backgrounds. I only mention this because I do virtual desktop and type a lot there.

It might be very faint SDE and my brain interprets is that way I don’t actually know. Either ways it’s not really that bothersome although I might need to find a way to darktheme my desktop if I’m to do desktop work.

@mr.uu I tried the Lab for whatever reason even though the desktop part loads fine the VR part is in the infinite waiting menu. Same for Bigscreen VR. I’m using the 261 Pitool.

Have you tried changing the brightness and contrast with pitool?
Recently a Spanish backer made dissapear the sun in Alyx, because of too extreme a value of brightness and contrast.
It could be the result of the reduction of color gamma with a texture apparently of the same color.
That, or it’s Mura.

Generic, you must have a microscopic eye to see the separation of pixels. Especially on the X. Maybe you have a sensitivity to all three subpixles on full brightness. Possibly just a glitch in the Matrix!

I’m only saying what’ I’m seeing. For whatever reason my bigger problem is some VR games seem to launch 100% of the time but the Lab and bigscreen seem to only launch ‘Sometimes’ I did finally get The Lab to work. @mr.uu I have to say 8KX with ‘The Lab’ looks incredible. Especially the archery game and the Robot repair, the amount of detail is amazing.

It’s possibly nothing to do with your VR headset and you’re maybe experiencing a neurological phenomena of ‘after image’, which is where your brain reacts abnormally to a light source and won’t ‘forget’ what you just looked at.

To describe in simple terms: It’s rather like if you look at a very bright light and then away, it burns in your vision for a few seconds, then fades - which is normal, except this is more subtle and starts screwing up your vision like a filter effect.

People notice it because unlike a bright light, the vague over-layed image doesn’t fade within normal speed/time and it can appear in daylight too Vs a contrasting colour without any additional light source, and the last seen image overlays the new image.

Example 1: if you looked at a circular shaped clock on a kitchen wall and the clock is white and the wall is cream or a darker colour, you might see a ‘memory’ of a circle in your vision when you look away from the clock and it doesn’t go away.

Example 2: If you look at a person’s head when they’re talking to you, then away at a wall, you’ll see an imprint of the outline of their head, like a shadow when you look at the wall after looking at them. (Obviously when you look away it doesn’t have to be a wall, it might be another surface like a mirror or a door etc).

Example 3:
You look at your phone screen and look at a picture on your wall, and the outline of your phone shape is now superimposed on the picture hanging on your wall and everywhere you look.

Example 4:
You look at a VR image and everywhere you look, your brain subtly overlays what you looked at, meaning the image is crystal clear but also not, like a filter and the filter is the last image when you didn’t move your eyes. As you move you eyes constantly it’s impossible for your brain to not see something is wrong, even though you can’t determine what it is, as the ghost image dissapates and is replaced by a new one, endlessly.

Basically it’s a persistence of vision and this will appear the most if you use a PC monitor, phone, TV, or look at anything illuminated, but also in daylight or dimlight with contrasting colour as previously described.

It can last hours or days and is not uncommon in people experiencing severe headaches, migraine, epilepsy and neuroinflammation disorders.

It’s also more likely to happen if you’re tired or had a day of no sleep.

It really could be my chronic insomnia acting up. I’m just posting what I’m seeing.

I want more people to get the X soon so we can test a bunch more things since everyone’s eyes are different. That’s why I put the caveat that my perspective is from someone who doesn’t see distortion on the 5K+. I can’t tell if it’s solved for other people if I never saw it myself but I know others who are far more sensitive to such things.

Must be X ray Vision :sunglasses:

Yep I am going to update my gtx1080fe to Amd Big Navi or Rtx 3080 then save for a 8kx from my current 5k+.
The Hp G2 feels like a waste of cash as I would not be moving completely forwards imo.

I also like that Pimax improves things like hertz rate as things evolve and eye tracking.

However I do think the Hp G2 is a fantastic deal for folks who don’t have lighthouses and controllers etc.

Never saw it so far. Need to check when i am home end next week. You only see it on bright colors/white areas? Sounds really like an interpretation of sde unique to your eyes. As i said, i do see a faint sde net pattern (only at white/bright areas) but the fill rate of the pixels is really high so i never see it in game.
I best see sde in the big round white static Pi(max)- Stars logo.
Certainly no black dots problem as i had a unit with that laying around. It didn’t bother me, but i then sold it because a friend did want it so hard :joy:

Oooofff. Now we know why you were complaining so much about your 8KX delivery. You’re in a bad mood every day. You need to get that sorted out bro

Not yet tried bigscreen. But the lab always worked without a hitch.

I told you so  :+1:

Probably just need more shuteye. I have been sleeping better since I got my X though.

you can change brightness-cpntrast on the fly when running bigscreen. just change the sliders in pitools while watching the desktop,
with using bigscreen the contrast was kind of too nuch when i was looking at a bright white page. i dialed the brightnes down a notch and it was much better to look at for my eyes.

What’s your current Pitool settings for Brightness and contrast?

Thats not what I said - yes great for those of you who have received a working headset, some of us have never had a working headset from Pimax despite being original backers. Having never had one and considering the very real posibility that we never will, yes some of us are looking at other options.

Using words like “converts” is an obvious insult in order to discredit anyone who says they have a reason to not like pimax. If you keep trolling people like that then peoe are going to respond. You claim to want to read less of responses like this but then you deliberately use language that incites it.

I mean, we’ll just brush over the fact that yes, pimax started shipping headsets to backers in 2018 but I didn’t even get my loaner until April 2019 after having had to post on the forums for months and they were well in to pre-order customers before they even shipped mine.
