CES 2018 V5 Road To Vr Review!

Hehe I do kind of understand the ‘always stay positive’ people but come on, the excuses you guys are throwing in are just ridiculous. Anyway one thing is correct, nothing we say or do will change anything. We now have to accept reality. 2018 is not going to bring us the Pimax 8k, at least not beyond a half baked product. Reality needs to sink in, I think I’ll go with a Vive pro then to bridge 2018.

I see I still have a little bit of work to do on you sjefdeklerk

You mean other presenters with beta products besides Pimax, as if Pimax had a beta product ? What did you smoke ?

“Projects” showcased at CES today. Or if you’re a n00b, products ready to purchase?

Excellent points! They are over extending themselves. Imho even though maybe costly would be to hire a marketing firm to help lighten the load.

And like with Immersed reach out to the community for help.

I haven’t had time yet to examine the reviews so to speak as of yet (work). But if they are still using the Vive Wands; that means they are demoing with lighthouse v1.0.

V1.0 can be problematic as the Lighthouse needs to see one another if using more than 1. I did a bunch of reading on the v1.0.

  • if 1 ir led fails it is a show stopper & can be hard to identify.

Lighthouse is also affected by ir light intetference (should be fine in CES) however at Immersed we ran into this problem due to a large window with sunlight.

Now i would grab a Valve Tech as they are listed as partners of sorts & they are the creators of lighthouse tracking not to nr confused with HTC

Who would accept the “X” version at 80hz in June-July? and who of the “X” backers would accept a wireless module (and some candies) as compensation on the same date?

In exchange, not one more protest here and a new piece of news that says that Pimax loves its backers.

Yeah that is bad that a team member has maybe missed a memo telling you 5k in Jan.

Trump though is a character & does operate with the idea all press can be spun even if unfavourable.

Mirq @denali is correct. They first showcased the idea of the 8k in January 2017 & due to the feedback did a tremendous amount of work on the v2 as stated by one who tried the v1. It was at Jan 2017 which helped boost the 4k.

“8k not ready for primetime but 4k impresses.”

Well in truth save those of us who bought a 4k or BE model; we are backers & not technically as others have said customers.

Meaning while we can “request” updates on our 4k/BE headsets as they did commit to improving this consumer product.

The 5k/8k if all performed by the componets’ advertised optimal specs we’d all have our backer reward as estimated.

Truth we should keep calm & wait for an update instead of running with tidbits of information. Being a kickstarter we have no guarantees & there are old ks projects where folks are waiting for reward or have had to accept there gamble lost.

I personally don’t beleive PiMax will not deliver. Though specs may not be at optimal levels much like a video card almost never reaches optimal output as advertised by Theorectical performance.

I asked pimax that question on KS and they explicitly stated the FOV was horizontal.

“Q: PIMAX… Can you please confirm the horizontal and vertical FOV? I’ve seen mention the 200 refers to diagonal FOV and not horizontal. Thanks A: The FOV of Pimax 8K is around horizontally 200 degrees, and vertically 120 degrees.”

OMG denali, you really want to compare Razer and MSI with Pimax. What the heck man ? Your really prove yourself without common sense, I wont answer your posts anymore, it’s a waste of time.

Of course I believe like almost everybody that Pimax lied to us, commited big mistakes, tricked us, etc.

But I am saying that what the reality showed us today was what is normal to be, with or without Pimax lying us.
So if they were honest with us , this result maybe werent so shoking to us, or maybe they wouldnt have gone to CES.

Then that is something for them to work out. As the animated pic clearly shows Diagonal top left to bottom right.

Now is it ppssible the pic was wrong? Certainly the same with the Pimax collaborator might have misinformation.

In a post i recall i think here in the forums thry said the vertical was 100°

So it appears info is not being passed via 1 memo to all. :disappointed:

“Q: What are the monocular horizontal FOV and the vertical FOV of your headsets? Monocular horizontal FOV is no less than 150 degrees, and we are still optimizing now. Vertical FOV is 120 degrees. (150? is this a different figure to the 200? Is it possible to clarify exactly what this means to avoid confusion?) A: Horizontal FOV: 200 degrees, and monocular horizontal FOV: 150 degrees.”

@Pillai, Vertical fov = 120, horizontal fov = 200”

Other KS quotes… Yes I’m still bracing for a ‘mis-communication’ on FOV and other things. We shall see

I think they will deliver at some point 2019. Getting the IPD mechanism correct is far from trivial, this is going to cost them some time since lenses move but the display doesnt. That equals difficult modelling I think. Tracking should be easier, I’m really amazed they couldn’t get the lighthouse tracking correct, this is just standard Vive stuff ! Optics I think is going to be difficult, each time they try a new optical lense they need to change their code too, I think it’s a lot of work to get it right. The mura, not sure what to think about that. Getting ergonomics right, I’m really amazed they haven’t gotten that right just yet. The refresh rate issue/stability, I think this is going to be hard, not sure if they should even put time/energy in it, I’d personally say, keep it at 80 hz and focus on the rest.

All-in-all I really doubt that we’ll see this release this year.

monocular means single-eye

One eye has 150 degrees, both eyes together have 200 degrees, because there is 100 degrees of overlap ( what both eyes see )

Somebody said that companies don’t bring unfinished products to CES. And I just showed that that is Not True. In fact it’s very common.

Probably but even you have to admit that demo-ing a less than half-baked product that doesn’t barely even work at a $200.000 exhibition fee is not a really good idea, right? For that $200.000 you could have bought yourself a LOT of technical expertise en engineering hours in China.
