They did not have 200 fov at the earlier versions, they were making it 200 (probably) for v5
It’s not a change.

Good summary. Just on the point three I would like to comment:
“3. There are artifacts and blurred area’s at the very edge of the lenses top to bottom and at the far edges.
-This appears to have been introduced in the V5 prototype as this was not an issue in the V3 reviews.”
There were people addressing the sudden blurring at the very outskirts of the lenses, and I noticed them too during my hands-on at the time. I believe this is not software or distortion related, but simply the edge of the lens, where it is no longer even, but rounded, and this likely creates distorted light to emanate from it. You cannot really address this on the lenses side, unless you make sharp 90° edges, but they could simply hide the edges behind fabric. They would lose a tiny bit of FOV, but this FOV obviously is more irritating than helpful. Perhaps they thought it may work out positively like the ambilight effect of Philipps TV’s, by emulating the general colour of that area without reporducing any correct picture extension. Well, apparently doesn’t work, so get rid off it.
Otherwise, well, I still see light at the end of the tunnel as some issues were not there with V3, so should be easily resolved while others may not all be big issues at all - but when reading reports from the CES 2017 presentation of the 8K, it seems that other than introducing positional tracking and adding the IPD they did not really have to do a lot. But the two additions still seem to be unstable, especially the IPD adjustment as this has not worked properly with any prototype so far. And the list of issues on features already present one year ago seemingly has gotten longer rather than shorter. I am sure there was a lot of refinement on areas not highlighted, but looking at the progress over one year my general optimism is taking a bit of a hit here.
One of the reasons why things are getting out of control may simply be overload in tasks at hand. If they would focus entirely on the HMD, they may resolve the issues within reasonable time and come up with a quality product.
But if they try to tackle in parallel all of the following:
Get real, @deletedpimaxrep1, @Matthew.Xu and Co., you have more on your plate than you can eat. Stall the works on anything but the 8K HMD, and focus your efforts ! Nobody will ever care about a decent controller, if your 8K sucks. Nobody will ever care about the eye-tracking or the wireless modules if the 8K sucks.
You have exhausted yourselves running the KS campaign. You have spent time hunting for Series A funding. All of that is accomplished.
The 8K is the starting point of it all, and it will be the ending point of your 2018/2019 generation of VR products, if it is messed up. Nothing good will come from any of your efforts if you do not get the 8K right.
I suspect you are not that far away from a good 8K as it may seem today - but you need to show some focus and determination at this stage, because the approach of the past months apparently did not work well.
Focus !
At this point we are well beyond what you would sanction or accept.
Just pray that they can cobble something together that you actually might want to use. And maybe you’ll get that by January 2019.
This whole campaign has really quickly shifted from a community based small group of enthusiasts that want to push the envelope to a situation where all the community can do is watch and pray.
Wouldn‘t mind a FoV reduction at all - imho more details is a better use of the high resolution anyways.
Please take your time to get it right - a rushed product won‘t help anybody.
If that is true tell them to stop doing that during CES. Back down the settings for the rest of the show to what you ran with V2/3 and finish up the rest of the CES at those settings that don’t screw what already has been demonstrated.
Man the investors of that 15m funding round would be pissed if your conspiracy theory was true.
But of course if pimax got 30 million from HTC, then maybe they would not be so mad. /S
I don’t know for sure.
Anything is possible.
Maybe HTC will sell better if a 200 FOV headset will not be on the market.
Maybe Pimax would have earned less than 15 mil dollars if they launched the headset on the market.
Maybe everybody is happy with the things as they are now.
Except me. I was burnt once , and I was burnt twice. By Pimax. Dunno what that means , maybe I am stupid.
While I appreciate what you are saying, I choose to feel otherwise. As for myself, I have never, and would never, presume to speak for anyone else here - it is neither my right nor function to do so. I therefore respectfully ask the same of others - please stop throwing around “we” like it is within your rights to do so - for it most certainly is not.
As for the performance of the Pimax 8K VR units at CES, I am waiting for my own reconnaissance reports as I have friends that were already scheduled to be there for work, and family that is there on vacation. I trust their information more than anyone else.
With respect to the product itself, I will accept nothing less than a unit that performs to the advertised specifications - I am willing to wait as long as it takes. Since this is a Kickstarter project I am well aware that I may be waiting a long time, but I am a patient person and am willing to wait as long as it takes to do this right.
Guys from a E3, rift, vive owner… The wearality sky sucks regards image quality on a phone but the 150 fov is brilliant.
Pimax… Focus on about 170-185 fov
I can’t help but think they have pushed things to far regards what the lenses are capable of especially at 200 fov and with some backlash of not hitting 90hz
Pimax we or I will be more than happy with lower fov for the sake of a better image @deletedpimaxrep1
Imho it would be preferable if they try to deliver the best product they can given the financial constraints.
Which optimally means they deliver (or even overdeliver) what they told us in the Kickstarter. But if there are the two options
a) continue aiming for the promised feature set until it is done or the money is gone (whatever comes first)
b) spend at least a few more months to see what can still be improved and then spend the rest of the money producing that
I personally would chose b) in a heartbeat.
Have pledged for too many Kickstarters that were not able to deliver at all to “request” perfection. (Requesting won’t help you anything anyways at the end - “being able to document that all money was spent trying to achieve the goal” is a perfectly valid outcome according to Kickstarter terms. But not optimal if you more want the product than “investing in raising the bar or fail trying”. (I know “the spirit” of Kickstarter is more along the lines of a) - but 800$+ is a lot of money for that, so I am in the group of people who prefer something good to perfect or nothing)
Well yes and no. If it won’t be ready this year, will it still be worth it ? Won’t Oculus/HTC be releasing their 2x4k headsets by then ? So sure, they should focus on quality but time is of essence too, if they take too long the market will be taken by others.
The amount of people asking for Pimax to simply lower the final specs of this thing is ridiculous… are you guys really this impatient? I’m not ok with less than 200 degrees, that was a huge selling point of this headset for me because I feel that looking through a scuba mask kills the immersion in a ton in games where peripheral vision would otherwise be extremely useful for observing your surroundings.
While I think we can all agree the lack of communication, and lack of progress is discouraging, I don’t think its time to start crying like a bunch of babies and accepting a lower quality/spec product. They have millions in investments… they just need to spend more time to make the product right. If it isn’t, I can assure you I, and many other backers will join in on roasting the ever loving shit out of this company so they don’t see any more business in the future.
TL/DR: Chill out until you receive a bad product, if its as bad as the reviews are making it out to be then we respond loudly on the forums/reddit and make the company look as bad as they really are.
I get your point, and I appreciate tha you continue to keep it as your own opinion.
I am coming at this from a slightly different perspective (YMMV). Having investeed the money in the Kickstarter, I am honestly fully prepared to end up with nothing (Don’t gamble what you cannot afford to loose - and Kickstarter is Gambling twice over). As we already had communication that the results for CES would be considerd and baked into further estimates in March of what was achievable, as well as the fact that CES is still going on, I am prepared to wait. Once CES is done, all the results are in and analyzed, and development priorities can be set and addressed by the Engineers I will then be able to give informed, reasoned, and thoughtful feedback - but again my feedback is only my personal opinion and I would not presume to speak on behalf of others.
Right now I think the community is getting quite a bit ahead of themselves in making suggestions while data gathering is still ongoing and no thoughtful introspection has taken place.
I insist that they need to have full-time beta testers if they want to bring this to a successful conclusion, or if they already have them, change them.
They have not listened to the community, it is as if the R & D team lived on another planet.
Seen the results of CES, they live is another planet
Something is definitely wrong. How could they take these V5 prototypes with so many problems, to be demonstrated.
They need better internal beta testers.
A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process or to act as a thing to be replicated or learned from.[1] It is a term used in a variety of contexts, including semantics, design, electronics, and software programming. A prototype is generally used to evaluate a new design to enhance precision by system analysts and users.[2] Prototyping serves to provide specifications for a real, working system rather than a theoretical one.[3] In some design workflow models, creating a prototype (a process sometimes called materialization) is the step between the formalization and the evaluation of an idea.[4]
Can everyone relax for a moment. This is a prototype. It’s not the final product. They are still working on some of the issue. They did delay the launch for a reason. It’s fine. No need to be a drama queen. This is a kickstarter project. If you wanted a sure thing, you can go buy a HDM at best buy.
Everybody, CHILL and happy face!
Just keep in mind the FoV is diagonal not horizontal (see animate pic on KS).
Problem is that they were talking about jan 2018 delivery. Now jan 2019 seems more probable given the huge ranges of current issue’s. If that doesn’t frustrate you to at least some extent, what does? It just s*cks, plain and simple.
