CES 2018 V5 Road To Vr Review!

everyone having meltdowns about minor issues .

Ignoring there was no complaints about perception of framerate , the thing which the forum has been obsessing over solidly since before the kickstarter finished.

The headset is delayed a few months. please contain hysteria until there is a final product.

Yeah, that’s because refresh rate comes into attention only when basic functions of headset works normaly, like focalization, a clean display without distorsions, ipd adjustment, etc. Only then we can talk about finer things like refresh rate or even fov margin and so.

Truth is that this community has been focusing much time on refresh rate ignoring other flaws it didnt know about.

I would have communicated with my stakeholders, first and foremost.

I know this is said easily and in practice it takes quite a bit of humility to come forward and make clear that you hit some serious bumps on the road. Of course there would still have been an uproar within the community but most importantly, QUESTIONS would have been asked,by both community and press. The answer to those questions can be prepared professionally, and although you might end up having sunk costs into a show you didn’t attend, you could have still spun the narrative of an eager startup, tearing at the very limits of what is currently possible and add to that the public perception that you are in it for the long haul and refuse to associate your brand with a product that you KNOW isn’t up to your high standards.

Then do some invites for select opinion makers, have them try v3 to v5, do an interview on the challenges you are facing and play that content via youtube, facebook etc.

That’s what I would have done.

Fair enough, I still don’t agree that this is a total disaster, we will see by the end of the week.

I appreciate your candid and logical discussion, it’s quite refreshing.

The problem is that time does not seem to improve things, 3 months ago there were things that worked well that now work very badly.

Same, appreciate it!

BTW, even given that they went to CES and with the HMD in this sort of state, the minimum would have been to a) make the backers aware of what would undoubtedly be reported and b) make sure your staff on the actual show floor can answer questions competently.

Good news is we know the bad feedback and issues before the final product.

Do this effect to backer? No, because no option to refund.
Do this effect to consumer? No, because this is not consumer version.

Only one bad news for backer is may you get late for the final product, the great news is it don’t have the real dead line to launch the fail product.

ā€œHow to eat an elephant … one spoon at a timeā€, CES make the rushing product and don’t rush again.

I like the new big lenses so much and will wait for a better version soon.

So it seems Pimax took a gamble in ā€œoverclockingā€ the fov and it blow up.

Well, better just hone the last prototype then.

We fell from ā€œvery good with some minor annoyances to fixā€ to ā€œI immediatly regret my purchaseā€ opinions, and this is not good for anyone.

Well you’d be wrong to presume. I had hoped that with all the prep work put into CES that they would have been ahead of the 8 Ball instead of being under the gun.

That being said I still have confidence in there ability to deliver an amazing experience. As many have said Kickstarters are almost never on their estimated timelines. As @mirq said this is more good for the big players like htc that uptil PiMax blindsided them were content with their mediocre display res.

But end of the road? A bit dramatic. And no one in their right mind would want some big cpmpany to buy out. Maybe partner up; but otherwise the bigs would overinflate the price. See HeroVR price point.

Yes absolutely I agree.

Glad to be proven wrong.

I applaud your unwavering confidence and am convinced that it’s the healthiest position to take as we simply cannot do anything about the state Pimax appears to be in.

I’m not really a ā€˜hoping’ kinda guy and prefer to evauluate what I perceive and try to extrapolate on that to try and predict what will be the most likely outcome. Until this CES blunder I considered that most likely result to be a great HMD with possibly some industrial design/build quality issues that delivers on what was being proposed in its KS. This significantly changed today based on how they are being reported on at CES, but possibly only for me personally.

In other words, I now think that they are a bunch of super motivated and clever engineers that have no idea how to get this product actually on the road.

Regarding a potential buy-out by a bigger competitor: who cares what any customer thinks regarding price points and the likes. If the cheque is big enough you cash in.

Haven’t scared me and if you think any different please don’t ever back a kickstarter project again.

Well like others had a chance to demo the v2. & working for a braindead fortune 500 company i have seen worst missteps; but like Trump they have the money to say oops next project.

But yeah were on this road & have to accept the road is often not smooth.

Agreed and if you look at what I posted, that is exactly what I am saying.

They have one shot to cause serious disruption within an emergent technology sector. They worked their ass off to get into that position and we all backed them based on those achievements.

Why on earth risk that by poor communication and strategically unsound PR?

That is the only aspect I cannot get to grips with.

So the issues on the v5, which is supposed to be a near shipping product.

  • Running at 80Hz (not 82hz stable)
  • Tracking issues (this is a tried and tested SDK so it is odd to show up with tracking issues)
  • Vivid lens distortions in the peripheral
  • Artifacts and clarity issues with the panels
  • IPD not working?
  • Controllers?
  • Ergonomics in an alpha stage

This sounds more like an alpha DK1 than a DK2/CV1

I think Pimax need to invest some of that money on hiring a HTC engineer to fix the tracking as that should be the easy bit. And if covering up the sensors caused tracking issues then that would have been obvious the moment they tested it internally.

When people hear that you are asking what games should you test on, that you have a head strap and that the unit is now smooth without visible sensors, that gives the impression that you are ironing out the tiny details. Frankly I think the community is being taken for a ride. The booth wasn’t even half of what you wanted either.

But then we get very little information on what is going on so assume things are progressing nicely and have to wait for CES 2018 to be underwhelmed and worried that the backing is most likely going to be a flop, and even more important in that 8K 90Hz 200 Fov really is a pipe dream for 2018. There are too many issues to fix even in the 12 months.

Yes I am sceptical. Prove me wrong and I will buy you a pint.

A larger FOV? Who need? Make it a little tighter, to increase the perceived resolution (if lenses based) and reduce distortion. We are pleasantly using 110 degrees headsets 'till now

I’m sorry but I’m really doubting PIMAX words. You guys just don’t inspire confidence mainly because every time the community discovers an issue, the PIMAX answer is" Oh yes, you are right, that was the reason"

Why this was never reflected into the updates nor any communication? or is this a trick to divert the attention from the 90Hz issue so the community can lower standards/expectations?

I’m lost/confused/disappointed/frustrated. It’s one step froward and 10 backward

if i held shares in PIMAX I would have sold them all and then shorted the thing.

You are covering for glory at CES.
for now the few opinions on the people who have tried them at CES … are disappointing.

@deletedpimaxrep1 excuse me but are you serious right now??
why are you coming with new issues and what was the point of showing at CES 2018 and make us wait???
Very Very Very disappointing …!!!

Agreed this is where they need to push to get the matketing position filled.

But if you want to see an example of an established company trying to become big without good prep look at Target a US retailer that completely failed with their attempt to break into Canada.

From what I have seen the Team is trying hard but needs more Market research. Its hard to compete with local business & even crazier to try on an international scale.
