CES 2018 - 8K Prototype details

Why would we be concerned? Anyone that has supported a kickstarter and/or looked at what the deadlines proposed were didn’t think a January release was feasible.

You should open a vote for the best forum beta testers?

I would vote

@Heliosurge
@Sjef
@crony

Of course only if they want to recieve an early unit

It would be fair if you offer a small group of beta testers to return their unit for the final model

Will do, thanks for your suggestion!

Is @Sjef a backer anymore ? I saw somewhere that he pulled his pledge.

Also, @industria should be included here.

It would interesting to know if 80Hz makes people motion sick, they need to get some head sets out to as many testers as posible.
Dose anyone know who or how it was discovered that above 90Hz was the magic number ?
I used a DK1 when it first came out and it made me very very motion sick running at 60Hz.

DK1 had no low-persistence display. This combined with the 60 Hz was a motion sickness recipe.
However with the Pimax 8k we have to consider the 200° FOV. Humans are more sensitive to flickering in their peripheral vision. So even the 90 Hz might not be enough for longer usage of sensitive people.

I was just fine with DK1 60hz after two weeks. Now reading about 90 is a must, well, if bigger is better - then yes please.

Hi, @deletedpimaxrep1:

I can’t think of a better beta tester than @SweViver; although he makes his reviews fun, is known for studying the topics in depth and with great seriousness. He’s also a great connoisseur of everything related to VR in general and SteamVR in particular,and is one of the first sponsors of the Pimax 8K and Pimax 8K X models.

Of course, I highly also recommend the “Tested” guys; I’m sure they will also go to the CES and give a first look at the prototype.

Thanks for your attention.

I sugest sending to some people with glasses. because v2 and v3 where not so great for them, and they can help to fix this in beta.

The biggest problem I see is not the delay, but we arrive in March and then we really see that the maximum refresh rate is going to be 80 Hz. What I would really like to know now is if 80 Hz is enough for a good experience with the Pimax. Whoever is testing should really focus on this.

Having enough space for glasses is absolutely essential for situations where it has to be used by multiple users.
Situations such as showing it in CES, for example, @xunshu.:slight_smile:

Yes, pimax said that they will pay attention, but i think they should send betas to glasses users like VR Kommando where the vr /fov experience was not so good.

They can give good feedback. If glasses users cannot use pimax at all, the refresh rate is not very important.

I remember that pimax ever said “will send the prototype to doc_ok” when we discuss about stretching of image, not sure ever done or not. Another choice.

The fact that they are considering an alternate hardware solution is fantastic, and i would guess only possible due to the backer and investor funding. Im more than happy to wait till march if it means a better product, more in line with initial expectation. .

“our Pimax community marketing team arrange close demos with VR enthusiasts, and ship a very small batch to the leaders in Pimax community and volunteers before shipping larger volume” … This is not what we agreed in the kickstarter founding … now what ??? I had to wait till mass production … march, may, june … when ?? When you were supposed to ship in January or at least Feb … Please respect what we agreed.

Why would you claim that such people cannot use the 8k at all ? They are going to deliver frames for subscription lenses as one of the stretch goals - so who-ever finds wearing their glasses uncomfortable with the 8k clearly has an alternative. If that is too much to ask from them - well, then they should not even bother about buying the goggles in the first place. I am wearing glasses myself and bought addon lenses for my Rift and Vive. So what.

So you would prefer to get a unit right away that is likely to not be as good as the march delay?

Now I am sure if you want to be part of the small batch testers it will likely be possible. However we need to see how the team sets this up.

In one respect any 8k-X backer that is willing & understands these 8k will still not be the Final Kickstarter release. & will need to provide regular feedback & log files where needed.

The 8k-X backers makes sense as there is already a system in place to exchange the 8k for the 8k-X. As folks will likely want to exchange the beta 8k for the kickstarter final release.

Of course my friend I want the first units, as i said before , Time is Gold !!! My Pimax 4K is falling apart everyday :sweat_smile: And of course if there going to be a group of tester count with me.

Glasses can be quite expensive. While the VR Frames are a great idea some may find the cost to fit their prescription too high just for gaming.

Yes i agree its a leap to say it would be unusuable. Especially if it came down to it. Thicker face foam could allow the xtra space needed; unless of course your glasses are out of a steam punk story. Lol
