8k+ first user impressions by @neonrazor

So what is the physical size of the panel used in the 8k+ as we already know the panel sizes used in the 5k+ & 8k.

There would be as the 8k+ is a higher res panel even though it’s using the same input res as the 5k+.

Still doing some testing but getting, what I think, are some funky steamvr settings

Render Quality is set to 1 but Steam VR says the 100% resolution is 2562*2106.

Shouldnt it be 3840*2160 or am I getting confused?

They have cut the panel a bit too much

but at least now we have a trace on how to trasform your headset

in “the beast” we all hope IT IS…

If I up the Steam values to match the headset display then it makes no difference to the display.

If I up the render quality then the display becomes much clearer but the sacrifice is unplayable frame rates (4fps).

Think there must be something up with my setup and drivers etc.

That’s the panel res, which is not relevant. The video signal to the 8K is only 2560x1440, so the res you are seeing in SteamVR includes some super-sampling.

SteamVR reports the rendering area size. The rendering area is based on your FOV, vertical offset, and PiTool quality (and possibly other factors I’m not aware of).

ok well at that res setting far detail is not as clear as the index, which I dont think is correct

The blurriness could be due to the SteamVR “maxRecommendedResolution” setting. The limit is too low for Pimax headsets and is especially noticeable with Parallel Projection enabled or when using Wide FOV. Have you tweaked your steamvr.vrsettings file? If not, you should. I’ve set mine to 12288.

yeah I set that to 8122 or something, will try your setting and see how that changes things

yeah tried that, no difference, its basically looking from the glass doors into the steam VR home at the back wall tv that lists all the games. Just a little less clear than the index but could just be my eyes and the sweet spot in the lenses.

Still the headset of choice for me right now

That is intersting. When I tried 8K Plus Pioneer with same setting, rendering resolution was 3202 * 2???(can’t remember that, sorry!).

For Seinfeld fans this does not inspire much hope…

So does that mean the lenses have changed?

Or the display panels are smaller.

Just means the Panel is smaller or the case viewport has been made larger. See Sj’s teardown.

If the 8k+ Screen is same physical size as the 5k+ it will look much better. If mem serves from the fellow whom replaced 1 of the og 8k screens it was 5.5" and if mem serves from SJ’s teardown 5k+ has a 5" display.

It is also why the 5k+ has a sharper pic vs og 8k; higher panel utilization.

@neonrazor Strangely my 8K+ Steam VR value is 3082*2632 at 100% and Pitool at 1.0. It has more clarity than Index at this setting. My 8K+ is an engineering model though.
Edit: I am on normal FOV.

Yanfeng are you by chance maybe running a test release version of pitool?

No I am running the latest official version of pitool.

PP on or off…?

HAM on or off…?

Offset?

All of those settings will impact the rendering resolution.

Right. I’m also using Normal FOV, but my settings are quite different. I’ve got PiTool Quality at 0.75 and SteamVR at 100%. Notice my vertical res; it’s noticeably larger, probably because of my Vertical Offset. The horizontal res is larger too, possibly because I have PP enabled.

I’m pretty sure @SweViver and/or @PimaxUSA have also said that the render target is smaller on the new 8K+ compared to the old 8K.
