I would have considered buying it for like $50USD max, but $120USD is too much.
Aside from one less USB port and slightly longer cable, I don’t think people will notice the difference in performance or image quality, except maybe when 90Hz mode comes out.
Hm. Does it provide more bandwidth? I thought that was a function of the display port.
If it lets us get to 90hz or better, it might be worth some coin. But I agree, $120 usd? Good grief. IF they held up a gun I’d feel a lot better about it.
Seriously, $50? Why don’t you try and see if you can assemble a hybrid optical cable like that in only an hour or two - what $50 of your time might be worth. These things are not necessarily entirely machine assembled.
Advantage is durability. Twisted pairs can be crushed and untwisted, especially at roomscale, and this problem gets much worse as frequency gets above 1GHz, because wires cannot be made thin enough to stay twisted that tight - and this is physics going back to the periodic table here. Optical cables are basically a necessity if you want to do really heavy roomscale stuff with higher-resolution headsets like the 8kX.
Where you might have had a credible argument would have been suggesting a longer cable. But maybe the plastic optical fiber had too much attenuation or dispersion for that, and further away from the headset itself, more conventional cables can be used with much less risk of untwisting.
the cable is way too short for really heavy roomscale stuff. my vr room is small. 2.5x2.5 m. with ceiling mount it needs at least 7m. First of all, money is second. this is another pointless product. for seated players probably okay.
6m could be usable for Roomscale much like 5m is okayish. Both require though a more perm setup with a pc mounted close or a ceiling mount for the pc. Which of course for a multi use pc is not ideal.
The Reverb G1 cable length was more in line with a seated play.
if the cable is preinstalled on the hmd and included in the purchase price, okay. to offer the cable as an extra, which is not a solution, because in my opinion it is too short. I don’t see any incentive to buy it because, as you say, I would have to bring the PC to the ceiling or extend it again. which means to cost again.
Cable is an upgraded one that is longer than og 8kX cable and in theory should improve bandwidth and in theory be extendable.
If more time had been set aside from releasing the 8kX it likely would have only came with the Fiber cable. However the Fiber cable required more time testing and developing before being released. You could simply wait for a longer version of the fiber cable to possibly release later on.
You can likely use your current bought extensions possibly.
Much like folks have expressed interest in a new all in one with an additional usb3 cable for both 8kX and original headsets.
But now you can use a more conventional extension cable, and expect the result to be much more durable, because the higher-frequency twisted wires do not go all the way up to the headset itself, to be crushed or untwisted.
I suspect that is the case.
Moving to optical cable at all is a huge leap. AFAIK, the electronics industry has been putting out standards (eg. USB) with optical connector support, for higher bandwidth, but the Pimax Vision 8kX seems to be the first device to make optical cables enough of a necessity to actually do this.
I have to wonder if we will not be seeing a ‘Pimax Vision 16kX’ headset, until GPU display ports catch up.
I would appreciate having a new all in one cable for my 5K+. I think my power bank is going bad or the cable itself is bad. I get flashing pixels all the time in my HMD. Unpluging the power bank and re-inserting will make them go away, but they slowly start coming back. Sometimes when I first start the HMD there are hundreds of them and I have to unplug everything (DP, USB, & 12V) before it will clear up.
The new cable is also more flexible so that can be added to the list of improvements it has but as you all have surmised it’s a lot more expensive to manufacture.
The cable in the existing headsets has been improved numerous times. The cable included with the super is the latest and greatest edition of the standard cable.
Optical cables just cost a lot to make. The 3rd party optical extensions some are using to extend the 8KX go for around £100.
Having said that, it would be easier for me to justify the purchase of the Pimax one if it was 7+ meters rather than 6. Would be a shame to buy it and then still have to extend a final metre or two.
