Why do I get the feeling that the Pimax 8KX has been rushed and unpolished?
I just got my Headset and It just feels like a children’s toy, but heavy and clunky.
The only good thing about it is the FOV. Everything else just feels cheap and not properly adjusted.
I do not like the Headstrap. Everytime I have it in my hand I am scared it is going to fall apart just by moving to fast in VR. The Headset Heats up while it is not turned on. The Cable too.
The Optical Clarity: I presume you are talking about how it looks while in VR?
If so. It doesn’t look much better then some other Headsets I have. I see God Rays, The Lens Distorts just about a Inch/20mm away from the Center, I see the LCD Dots just like my Other Headset. There is no Sweet Spot. I really wonder if this is really even a 4K Resolution Per Eye.
Playing Various Games Fast and slow Pasted even If I was trying to convince myself that I paid for a Budget Premium Product I really was expecting the best for what its worth. My Eyes felt Irritated and exhausted after being used for less then 30 min.
I was always trying to adjust, but It’s not just me… My friends with different Head sizes and some with Glasses. We had a Chill Party and we set it up together yet it turned into a nightmare with this Headset PIMAX 8KX. Also some games just do not even work. I got both the Valve Wands and Index I tried Both the Wands were working as expected, but the Index Controllers really just glitched everywhere.
Lucky someone took there Portable Quest with and that was Perfect for Casting to my Samsung Q80T QLED TV. Also what I found was amazing. Also They Used SideQuest and I was amazed at how good that was compared to my Valve/Pimax.
There I wrote a bit more. This is my Opinion and the Opinion of 5 Others. We did not like this Pimax 8KX at all.
I am even hesitant to get a Quest 1.0 until a better VR Headset comes out, but I regret buying this Headset and I can think of how others are doing that dreamt of a true amazing experience, but got this instead. @Pimax you betrayed my Trust and I am very Disappointed.
You mean the Valve Index right? I’m surprised you like the Quest better considering the Index has much higher resolution and less screen door effect. What do you like most about the Quest?
Bit skeptical if this is an actual P8kx user ot someone trying to diminish pimax’ image further by applying known negatives about the headset in this review.
All reviews and opinions and views are welcome of course but if this is all true it’s a bit worrying
Pimax Vision 8kX has the highest resolution available. It is indeed 4K per eye.
My guess is you do not know how to configure the resolution of a VR headset properly. Try adjusting ‘Render Quality’ under PiTool to 1.25, and SteamVR video resolution until the number is something like 5376x3024 . You may also have to adjust the ‘maxRenderResolution’ in the SteamVR settings file.
Pimax headsets produced by a small company using the latest technology for those who need the visual quality and field of view. Flight simulation and virtual desktop are some of the best use cases for these headsets.
Please keep in mind some tinkering is required, particularly with SteamVR software.
The modular audio strap (MAS) does not fit everyone equally well. Many users find this new strap offers the best experience. Some users find it is may be better to refit older Pimax straps to the 8kX, or to fit a Vive ‘Deluxe Audio Strap’ (DAS).
Also consider that your graphics card may need to be upgraded to get the full benefits of a Pimax 8kX. Normally, the superior physical resolution of the 8kX should make any rendered resolution look somewhat better - that you did not observe this suggests your computer’s performance is so slow the default resolutions were borderline on what many here would consider unusable. Fully overclocked 2100MHz RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards are almost the norm around here.
All that said, if you find the 8kX just does not work well for you, please sell it on eBay. You can definitely get ~$1500 for it, more than you paid for it, and will most likely be getting it into the hands of someone who can make good use of its full potential.
@Mikenz666 not that I need because you are just like everyone else a random and all I did was share my point of view. That is Pimax8kx is for me bad & we did not like it. Yet just because you are a special being https://ibb.co/fvn9pXy go figure.
not gonna chat no more if people start coming with conspiracies.
Good Day.
@mirage335 thx for the tip it seems you know more. This I am happy for have a great day
Sure. Please also keep in mind people like Mikenz666 are respected members of this forum. It is not that he had anything against you, rather, that this forum has seen its share of trolls too many times.
Now, I think it should go without saying that a ~$1300 VR headset is very nearly a product intended for professional users, and some research should be in order before buying. Pimax did not betray the intended market for this product in regards to the capabilities and quality you refer to.
@Mikenz666 I see you typing up a response. Keep in mind so far it seems like this may just be from someone relatively new to VR who just didn’t realize what they were getting into before buying the 8kX. And maybe can be a bit quick to judge. So, take it lightly.
Well ok, linking me to a stock image of an 8kx with a username “X isShit” takes away any non bias view you have and any credibility in what you say…
If you do own an x, sell it to someone who can appreciate it ( it’s obvious above your level) and go back to your more basic quest that better suits you…
Best case here is take what you say with a grain of salt
Wow at two other users also suggesting to sell the 8kX on eBay for someone who can make better use of it. I was worried I might have been borderline on too rude with that comment, but hey, it’s so true!
For me I have factors that I value the most, ranked in the following order of importance:
Resolution and SDE
Wide FOV
Comfort
Colors
Now it’s true, when I got the StarVR it took a while to get used to the lower resolution before I started appreciating the colors and benefits of the StarVR. And then eventually, one day, I realized I value resolution most. So despite Index looking grey at times, it is overall very clear and immersive. The clarity and resolution of the Index is perfect with 150% supersampling.
Also unlike the Quest, I’m not limited to a small library of games with poor graphics and low refresh rate in Facebook’s walled garden.
Dear OP, for people who are new to VR, the Quest will look like a fantastic user friendly headset and the 8KX will look complicated. Play with the Quest for a few months like I did, eventually you will yearn for better resolution and field of view. When you step up to a more advanced headset, you need to be prepared to do some tinkering for the best experience.
I had to do a lot of tinkering with my StarVR but it was worth it for me.
just FYI, steamvr perfectly works through the link with a bit more drab colours than native Quest but miles better than Index + it also available through virtual desktop with good dark blacks but not for all games (HL:A is perferct, Echo/Table tennis not so much), + of couse a sidequest with a lot of free cool applications
Based on these additional impressions it does indeed sound like your 8KX wasn’t configured properly. I say this just based on the many other hands on reports that we have now regarding the headset’s greatly improved resolution and clarity. There are many guides on this forum to help you with getting the headset dialed in properly if you are willing to give it a fair chance. However, if you don’t want to bother with that and are instead looking for an easier to configure experience then selling it on Ebay for profit is also a fair option.
Do be aware that Pimax is currently developing software that should make the configuration experience more automatic which may allow you to experience the real potential of the headset more easily. It is in closed beta testing right now but should go into open beta soon. Just wanted you to know that in case you want to wait before selling it off. I really do think you have just had a bad first impression due to improper setup. But as noted by others you haven’t lost anything because of the high resale value of the headset. Thanks for posting your thoughts and best of luck no matter what you decide to do.
