been flicking through the catalog of games available as of late and none bearing in mind that vr has been here a number of years now and when i say none, im talking about new release games like tomb raider ,exodus ect are implementing vr support ? it seems we are going the Na not really road as far as big dev company’s are concerned .
Even bethesda has drooped support and is just doing stand alone theater nothing hard built at all ,weave seen it can be done ,its just not being done, you could argue there are lots of games being released but to me there are three categorizes ,cash crop short quick demo types and lots of them ,old games redeveloped fair optimization which are few and of course paid support games mainly oculus as cant say ive heard of any steam developed ones .
Are we falling into the after thought categorizes as far as AAA game makers are concerned or is the early talks years ago about adopting vr into games as they are made a dream only
Will we just have to wait for them to do quick ports when sales need a boost for a game or will we just have to wait wait wait?
I have not heard any new for a long time now
My guess is players like Bethesda are so money hungry, they, for now, have little interest to push VR forward. When headsets, GPU’s and content grows into something at least twice what we have now, then the fidelity of watching games in a VR screen will make them want to stand out, maybe. For now we need smaller companies and maybe even more porn to get this VR thing into the hands of many more people
Playstation VR content library expansion would indicate the opposite.
still only what i would call mostly short titles
VR may take a while longer to become widely accepted. Better headsets (like the 8K) and more powerful GPUs (like the 2080) will help. In the short term, games which can really benefit from VR might be mostly limited to flight and driving games, where there is a real payoff. Also, those are the sort of games which have a loyal following, who are willing to spend money on peripherals (like HOTAS and steering wheels). There are a lot of VR enthusiasts for games like that.
I partially blame HTC for that.
Some rambling opinions…
HTC who have gained the premium name tag in the industry are killing momentum by launching the Vive Pro at $$$ so anybody new that wants to get into VR either buys the perceived cheapo options for $200 - $500 or the option everybody else raves about which costs >$1000. There really is no middle ground when everybody talks about the Vive Pro being the one you need to really experience VR at its best.
I really really dislike HTC for doing this in such an emerging industry where cost is the one major factor that will make it or break it. Oculus knows this but HTC went ahead with their premium offering regardless. Not only that but they made it confusing with the HMD only path. They do not have a great track record in the mobile sector and now I know why.
Also, there is now a lull in adoption as people wait for ver 2.0. Will it be the Santa Cruz or the Pimax, I think they will both occupy the gaping hole in the middle, or at least I hope they do.
WMR do not even come into it for me. Inside out tracking is not comparable yet so many games struggle with it, a step backwards. 3DOF controllers are also a step backwards. These cost cutting features are essential parts of what makes VR fun but cutting them out of the hardware means the software has to cope with that too.
As soon as the Pimax is launched the industry will level out the costs no doubt. I just hope we don’t get a race to the bottom scenario.
Then, hopefully more devs will invest in it as it is another HMD that supports the accepted standard (good tracking + 6DOF).
Every single non-tech person that has tried Beat Saber at my house has flatly said they want to buy VR just for that game. No it doesn’t work on the Oculus Go, No the WMR headsets are not ideal either, getting there but you will lose tracking when extending your arms about. You need a Rift/Vive and a gaming pc as a minimum…oh right. Never mind then.
TL;DR
VR is slow moving due to being a brand new (<5 years) medium and all over the place with different technologies battling for acceptance on the different platforms. it is expensive too. But there is a clear benefit to it, VR is amazing, we early adopters know that and until something can replace it, it is here to stay.
I think we have come to the phase where indie VR developers have realized there is no point pushing half-baked asset flips to Steam anymore. They won’t sell much.
The larger developers are slowly starting to adopt VR but its of course very time consuming to port existing games to VR, maybe even more time consuming than doing new VR games. And developing AAA VR games is still not profitable.
Also, it’s been summertime. Not the best season for VR and gaming in general.
Im sure we have lots of great releases coming up this fall and winter. Personally, I prefer 10 quality games more than 300 asset flips as we have seen in the past (especially in late 2016 and beginning of 2017).
By the way.
Once you get the 8K, a lot of old VR games will feel like new again! So dont worry
I hope so. I backed the 8K for Skyrim VR but now I already played a bit with just my Pimax 4K without 6dof.
I quit playing and am still waiting for a tracked 8K for a new Skyrim VR experience.
There has been always a SIM game scene that got largely decoupled from the mainstream some 10yrs ago. What once was among the top rated games is not really AAA today. But sure they will push things forward over time, they just have their own pace. And are largely seated experiences.
For room scale experiences I have many doubts. For one also on game consoles the mainstream kept sofa bound, and secondly the tethered hmd keeps room scale in the geeky corner. And then there is space constraints and such… so …
Hope is large FoV kicks some excitement back into software development and the second wave might come with untethered hmds. Good chances for Elder Scrolls and FallOut VR every now and then. But surely no real FPS, too much work out involved.
In case Facebook doesn’t succeed with the inter social strategy they might pull the plug in a few years.
But seated sims will prevail as they always did…
Room scale games is one of the main reasons why VR is so “big” today.
The added immersion by playing freely in a 360 environment with precise tracking is the most impressive thing about VR for most people. Of course some people will never leave their sofa, but if they try once, they will never enjoy the seated experiences again - unless its seated VR simulators.
If every PSVR user had the chance to try real 360 tracking, he/she would never go back to 180.
Having that said, room scale gaming will never be the same once you go wireless.
There is practically no way back. Its painful to play with cords again…
Yea, I hear what you’re saying… but I really don’t think going wireless is the true BEST solution! I think a better solution is the development of systems like the Katwalk mini… a 360-degree treadmill kinda of device where you can move endlessly in a VR app but not really go anywhere in the physical world. We’ll probably have really good wireless VR before that treadmill exist where it feels natural… but with a treadmill device… the wire is no longer an issue. I finally cleaned out an entire room in my house for VR and damn… I still run into the walls playing GORN!
KatWalk-mini
BTW… have you tested Subnautica on the M1 yet??? was it a or a
???
Defiantly would expect most backers to already have a favorite game drawing them to 8k and and a whole new experience but still worry at the lack of (Where going to do somthing soon ) rather than the demos the AAA guys have thrown out although it might show willing it dosnt show there interest in vr unlike the makers of Hellblade who made a crackin job of porting it over for free !!
Yes you guys are right its a big expense and it only seems to be getting more expensive as if somone wants vr to fade away ,well at lest the newer tec is (apart from pimax ,got it at a bargain price )
This is a point I actually disagree with. Roomscale is great, no doubt, and one of the eye openers when you experience VR for the first time. But on games which you play for hours at a time, say Skyrim, Fallout 4, I noticed that I found it tiring to stand all the time. So I began to sit down while standing up for fights. Nowadays I just play seated almost all the time. It may be due to my age and lazyness, but I believe that seated VR is something we need to consider as a major use of VR even with those who have roomscale VR at their disposal.
I can’t reaslly enjoy immersion when I sit down while my player height is standing. Somehow not aligning with the game height from the ground breaks immersion for me.
I agree with that.
Room scale is great for short experiences & party style games, but any proper full length game which I want to spend large amounts of time in ie… fallout, Skyrim, ai & so on imo need to be seated.
Give me a well developed vr treadmill & I’m sure I’ll never sit on the sofa again for fallout, but in a square with boundaries where I still need to move using controllers. I might as well be sat down comfortably instead.
It’s really great to read threads like this, It highlights how everyone is different and we all evolve to be individuals. I myself think roomscale is without a doubt the #1 reason I keep playing in vr. As for the Kat Walk vs Wireless thing Wireless wins hands down in my eyes. There’s no way I could enjoy Onward as much as I do if I couldn’t get down on the floor roll around and snipe ppl. or play golf club vr, or table tennis, there’s no way you could move fast enough on that device. There is a place for the Kat Walk and I would love to have one but wireless improves everything, even the Kat Walk.
thats fixable n steam setup
For you maybe but I play skyrim for several hours and alot of that time is spent on a treadmill so I’m physically walking while playing. Everybody is different. I have never once sat down in a roomscale game.
Onward is definitely an exception.
Great game for playing in Room scale.
I’ve had my misses walk in on me lying on the floor in that one lol
