Hi guys. Sorry Ive been a bit busy with things the last days… Im currently testing a 60Hz mode on 8KX. Will send it to Matthew later today!
Is this 60 hz DSC or is Native ? Do you know ?
DSC. The old 60Hz mode without DSC was never stable anyway.
@SweViver AWESOME! I have been hoping to hear back from you and its really great to hear 60Hz is available for the 8kX. It could really save the day when specific situations tun out to require it on any hardware, and I have long suspected 60Hz will work better than 64Hz.

As for turning off DSC, I for one also do not want any developer’s time or stability margins sacrificed for this. Anyone who does needs to read and understand how DSC works. DSC is an encoding scheme like color analog NTSC/PAL, not a lossy frequency-filtering scheme like JPEG or H.264. As I understand it, the purpose is to trade increased numbers of transistors for lower clock rates, which has more to do with the way modern silicon chips work, than any ‘bandwidth’ issue…
EDIT: To be clear, the study Fabrizio cites is indeed quite interesting. However, I would caution the flicker and panning protocols are obviously extremely demanding - any difference in the images will be visible. VR headsets are not used the same way as computer monitors - the rendering process will introduce similar ‘artifacts’ on a far worse scale, to the point that even trivial modifications (ie. smallest possible adjustments to VR app supersampling or quality settings) will make a much more significant difference. In the end, I can see how a high-quality psychometric study comparing VR headsets with all other variables countrolled could get participants to identify when DSC was used in a particular setup, or maybe DSC might slightly affect H.264 compression ratio if it were ever used in a way that could apply to, but otherwise, I don’t see this being relevant at all.
This is like using a translucent material for a matte finish computer monitor surface that has been completely sanded at 3000 grit, then partially sanded with 3005 grit. Yes, you might notice that, but are you really going to care if the whole thing is done with 3000 grit instead of 3005 grit?

so if 60 HZ is DSC it’s not the end of the world.

Yes, Pimax said they can do reviews (with certain restrictions) but I guess they prefer being better safe than sorry.
So as long we don‘t hear about FINAL
(and there‘s hardly anything final even if it‘s called final, since there will be improvements and step backs from batch to batch) + NDA lift off, we‘ll only get new info about the 8k from sweviver and mirage.
Still, those news are appreciated and cudos to their awesome work (really!) but I wouldn’t mind more voices of course as well.
