Finally Valve is moving forward with some tools to aid us in playing smoothly. I’m curious how this compares to ASW and how well it works. I wonder if it will work with Pimax consider their reprojection is different?
maybe currently only works on Vive, but the doc talks about it as a generic function
(i.e. “This means that the player is still experiencing full framerate (90 Hz for the Vive and Vive Pro)…”)
Since this is in SteamVR they are saying it should work with all steam compatible HMD’s. Can Pimax please confirm the 5k+ and 8k will work with it?
Article says any steamvr headset including WMR, etc…
Maybe we can have our resident testers give it a shot when they have some spare time. @SweViver @mixedrealityTV @VoodooDE what are your thoughts on this?
I’m so hyped for this! Can’t wait to go test it!
“Motion Smoothing is not enabled when using Oculus Rift or Windows Mixed Reality headsets with SteamVR, because their underlying display drivers use different techniques when applications miss framerate”
considering that the other reprojections were also deactivated on Pimax, so will this one, but perhaps Pimax should ask Valve to be included.
I’m very afraid you are correct. Pimax needs to do what they have to in order to be compatible. This frees them from having to develop “brain warp”.
they say that its in beta steamvr? but do not say if you need to enable it or if its enabled by default? I have win10 enterprise, with a Nvidia card and am in the steamvr beta, so i should be able to see if it works on the 4k? but how to enable it?

Great news, given the similarity with ASW it would make sense to assume it’s a kick-in kick-off feature too where consistently loosing frame make the game start to run at halfrate or lower for a while. They didn’t word it like this so I’m curious to see if they opted for a different way.
Really awesome news, gonna try asap! Thanks!
PLEASE TEST MARTIN!!
THIS CAN BE HUGE!
What it means for you
From the player’s perspective, what was previously a game that would hitch and drop frames producing judder is now a game that constantly runs smoothly at 90 Hz. SteamVR Motion Smoothing improves upon the previously released Asynchronous Reprojection to enhance the overall experience for customers across a wide variety of VR systems. Not only can lower-end GPUs now produce smooth frames in applications that were previously too expensive, higher-end GPUs can now render at an even higher resolution increasing the fidelity of all experiences on all VR systems.
higher-end Nvidia GPUs can now render at an even higher resolution increasing the fidelity of all experiences on all VR systems.
If you read the article all the way through, you would know how to enable it (and yes, it’s enabled by default, at least it was for me).
This could be what were looking for on the 4k to help ghosting.
here’s hoping! although if it is enabled by default, i was using the 4K last night and ghosting was still there on all the different pitool and piplay versions i tried. I will report back.
We all at times, just want the cliff notes as it saves time skimming.
Oh no, i read this bit. " if you prefer to run without this feature, just look under ‘Settings > Video’ or ‘Settings > Applications’ to control when it is enabled."
But as i was using 4k last night and this was text was posted yesterday, i would of expected it to have had some impact in games, didn’t notice anything then - unless it does not work for the pimax?, Also i never got a steamvr update last night either, so maybe i don’t have it yet? who knows… i will check again when i’m home later tonight.
