Valve Index HMD announced

looks like the plot thickens?

so we have double lens (explains the oddly protruding lens of the leaked photos from last year) for micro displays (the patent explicitly mentions micro displays - so BOE’s secret customer for dedicated VR micro displays they mentioned was indeed valve)

so the real secret will be the field of vision, as this is a new thing any earlier estimates (like the 135°) might be way off as they where expecting a conventional arrangement

any earlier rumors on ties from valve to a eye tracking company?

All aboard the hype train!! Give me a 1st class ticket please :joy::joy:.

Speculating wildly: If we are talking lenses with the properties suggested by the patent, coupled with a microdisplay expanded to the full FOV by the optics, two of the interesting things that could (could!) mean, are: Reduced, or even entirely eliminated field curvature falloff (clear image across the entire field of view); And no longer needing to have the left and right eye image truncate one another, so no more black cutout in the FOV toward the nose, like with the Vive.

yeah, and don’t take a seat, standing is the best position to keep a lookout in every direction

Hum, please find me wrong, only 50mm diameter lens, I think I will side with Tyriel Wood

Wrong about what?
….

Only 50mm diameter lens ;-(…

Could a higher magnification lens, closer to the eyes, on a smaller display lead to an increased FOV?

I fail to see where I made any statement about the size of the lenses…(?)

EDIT: Ah! I see you added some to your previous post; My question stands. :7

Your too accustom to by challenged here  The please is really a invitation really hoping to have a larger lens on the Valve index. indicating probably a larger FOV

Well there’s also this quote from Kopin’s conference call from march 12:

BOE’s factory is actually finished. The equipments are in. They are at this moment test running now. I think I will be there hopefully in 10 days to hopefully celebrate the first run to coming out

https://seekingalpha.com/article/4248124-kopin-corporation-kopn-ceo-john-fan-q4-2018-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=single

So one could speculate that the test runs have been successful and Valve now feels confident that they can ship with BOE’s (2k * 2k RGB OLED) panels in May… I mean the timing with what Kopin said about Boe’s test runs and the reveal now by Valve coincide.

Well, I haven’t read any of the text in the patent application, but the pictures show a display that is smaller on the side, than the diameter of the lens, being bent toward the eye by the two-element lens train.

A quick bit of protractor work seems to suggest that to see 70° to the left and the right (EDIT2: I.e. 140 in total), through a 45mm diameter hole, one would need to be (EDIT; …about…) 8mm from it…

Hard to say pimax 4k had 53mm lenses with no increase in fov.

Does my response to mmorselli help any?

(EDIT: 22.5/tan(70)=8.19, and if we are magnifying a stamp-sized display, there is no need for the eye-tube to flare out a whole lot.)

Yes but I’m skeptic this optical apparatus will possibly have a critical sweep spot, and this 8mm doesn’t give much room for glasses, plus the dimension showed in my picture are very close to the original VIVE design. maybe a new iteration of the prototype was done…

yes, but single lens on bigger display.

patent says:

… An optical system for a micro display is provided which utilizes double Fresnel lenses on curved surfaces to shorten the focal length while maintaining a good shape factor for moldability and aberration control…

…The lens element may have a focal length which may be less than 25 mm . The lens element may provide a field of view which may be at least 85 degrees…

85 degrees… per eye?

We are only speculating, after all. Come May, hopefully we will know.

The rumored JDI display is about a 3.25 inch LCD display

So not the microdisplay we see mentioned… Time will tell, I suppose. :7

Really hard to say. Now @crony would be a goid one to ask as he has studied & played with a multi stacked lens from Infinitieye which evolved to StarVR. And they used a stacked lens setup in the begining to achieve a wide fov.
