Valve Index HMD announced

IIRC Valve used displays from BOE https://www.boe.com and JDI (Japan Display) https://www.j-display.com in their leaked prototypes. JDI announced a new 1001ppi 2160x2432 RGB 120hz panel especially made for VR…all speculation until we get official specs, but Valve could have a very hot iron in the fire

Ah yeah. I take your point now. I suspect you are right that it might not work perfectly with everygame.

I’m not chufed really… 140 FOV won’t do. But if this means they’re finally loosening the grip on those Lighthouses I’ll drink to this news.

I still haven’t found a reliable source to confirm that though. But I guess it does make sense since BOE is about to start mass production right now

Wild speculation but

2160*1.15=2484
110 *1.15 = 127 FOV
50mm Lens x 1.15 = 57.5mm

in contrario circular lens don’t help much for getting more horizontal FOV

i’m still thinking about eye tracking, there was enough room inside the hmd in the (pretty old) pictures of the prototypes and we did see ready made working products with Tobii eye tracking on last CES from htc and pimax
Croteam just released a eye tracking ready version of The Talos Principal, they can’t have done this for the Vive Pro Eye Version (that nearly no gamer will buy) - on the other hand i don’t see that much use for such a expensive extension, FFR as shown in pimax beta’s can do the trick without it and as input device its just to exotic and still needs hands for “normal” interaction
but maybe its optional with the Index, FFR for free and improved eye tracked FR and eye tracking as input when you see it as usefull

Very exciting news indeed, and a bit surprising they are aiming for a release (or pre-order?) already in May. Valve is going for wider FOV, which every other big company is ignoring. 135 degrees might not sound as a big leap compared to Pimax, but at least its a nice step forward in the right direction.

If they can make the headset plug and play and working as expected, within a reasonable price range and maybe bundled with some nice game(s), I think this might be a very big thing for VR in general, and could attract more new VR players than Oculus Quest will do in the long term. And Im talking about the mass of serious gamers on Steam, and not a random mother playing Beat Saber once a month because she had a glass of Wine.

I wouldnt say this is a bad thing for Pimax at all. More of the opposite actually. Most people still dont understand the power of wide FOV, and if Valve can make people to get convinced, then Im sure Pimax will benefit from this in the long term, as it still will have several advantages over the Valve Index, not only with the FOV but also higher resolution and other settings such as several Hz options, brightness adjust etc etc which we still dont know if Valve will implement. The full compatibility with Knuckles is going to help as well. Having that said, the Valve Index will indeed be the first real competitor and this will only make VR to develop in a faster pace from now on. One day, maybe even Oculus will understand…

Valve Knuckles has issues with A LOT of older wand games. You can set a profile with SteamVR Input interface, but due to the thumbstick / trackpad difference they are often not optimal

Only a massive knuckles spreading will fix the problem, but not for games where development has been abandoned

Perfect comment…

Are you reading this Pimax? Eyestrain? Cracks? Lack of controllers, lighthouses, handmotion units, and other accessories? How long do we have to wait as KS pledgers?

Another 1.5 years at the best???

No no no…

The biggest trick will be if Valve opens up LH v2.0 at reasonable prices. This demonstrates why Valve has had the strangle hold on supply. Stocking up for their own headset release.

Hopefully Valve will ensure supply at reasonable prices to help with adoption instead of making price a large barrier in LH tracking VR solutions.

Indeed & of course it didn’t help that Valved made changes messing up VR input emulator.

Hopefully pimax puts a cap sense on the stick controllers like oculus did on the touch so tge stick can act as a trackpad when needed.

I would take 140 FOV without distortions or eye strain any day !!

Main things I need are:-
Comfortable to wear
Clarity ( includes distortion, god rays, text etc )
Colours
FOV

If the colours, clarity or comfort are not there then the FOV doesn’t really matter …

If Index increases market adoption, that should only help VR in general. I’ll be happy with even more high quality games to play on my Pimax. Worst case for controllers now is that I have to buy a set of Valve knuckles as well as the Pimax ones.

It’s just a relief to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel for the releases of VR 1.5/2.0.

This seems like good news

140° horizontal is “Normal FOV” of Pimax, which was the only FOV I have been using so far and was happy. So 135° (or 140°) on Index will be on par for me.

What is still a big question is the panel resolutions and subpixel configuration.

Agreed, and lens config, if non-Fresnel lens are used, I will buy instantly ! I hate god rays !!

At best it will be hybrids lens, Valve dev kit lens are Fresnel lens, prototype was equipped with Fresnel lens, Fresnel are used now for some reasons and those reasons will remain until some very new technology emerge. large FOV headset are very susceptible to weight and cost of the lens

I made the exact same post but was moved to general… :stuck_out_tongue:

Only prey animals require larger than 140 fov , we have evolved
