You’re amazing. I have a dongle coming this weekend, but I’d love to avoid using it. Thanks for listening to the community and working thru it. I’m very excited to begin using the 5k+ w. good controllers again.

Just keep in mind it’s an estimate and not a certainty. :beers::sunglasses::+1::sparkles:

For sure - the first stuttering fix didn’t work for me, but they eventually nailed it. I’m fine with waiting - all I was hoping to see was an official response like that! I’m confident they will sort it out. They’re bundling index controllers, it would be huge to recall so many HMDs.

That! would be awesome. I hope for the best. Thanks for answering to this post, i nearly lost my hope that we will sit on this problem without any solution except those workarounds.

Great to hear a fix is coming! I will post mine here as I haven’t posted yet but I am having the same issues as everyone else. Really noticeable in fast games like Beat Saber.

Issue Title: Tracking Issue with Index Controllers and Pimax headset
Description: Tracking loss with Index/Vive controllers on Pimax headset. I tested on Vive Pro/OG Vive and both the Index and Vive controllers have no tracking loss issues with those headsets.Big issue it causes a lot of games to be unplayable on Pimax headset.

Ok so I just updated to PiTool 259 and it seems to have fixed the tracking issue. I haven’t done extensive testing but I tested in Beat Saber just now and did not have the issue. (edit: other users did testing of tracking issue, result: not fully resolved just less frequent)

I couldn’t find a thread for the PT 259 release yet so I will just post here.

Good:
-Fixed controller tracking issues (apparently not fully fixed just much less frequent)
-Fixed IPD issues in 144hz mode

Bad
-Headset display seems to be dull/dim compared to before. I tried upping the brightness to +5 but it didn’t help. (roll back to previous PiTool doesn’t help still dim)

@Heliosurge any release notes for the new PiTool?

Edit: at this time I do not recommend update to PT:259/FW:264 due to dim display issue despite slightly better tracking.

Edit again: I am staying on 259/264 now as the tracking is definitely much better than before and also I got the backlight issue fixed using KingTodd’s fix here:

9 posts were split to a new topic: PiTool 1.0.1.259 discussion

Moved discussion about new PiTool version to new topic…

Left single post by @Eyeon.

Not sure which thread to respond to.

I have tracking issues about every 5 mins with the left vive wand on both my hmds 5k+ and 8k+. I also have the tracking issue on my Left index controller. This must be software being on so many devices. And the fact that it’s the left vive wand as that can be either controller on start up.

during the valve and pimax support tickets I went through all possible troubleshooting, like unplugging all not needed usb devices, sending steamvr report, Windows diagnostic report, trying all pitool versions, Uninstall USB devices in steamvr, complete win reinstall. Tried also original USB driver, all USB ports and newest Bios, tried different pcs, different rooms, changed ALL hardware, also the XR HMD and index controllers, see this https://community.openmr.ai/t/index-controller-use-with-pimax-discussion/19940/266?u=yxcxcv.

Only solutions: use cables for the controllers or flashed steam dongles.

Shame that this still seems to be an issue with .261.

I had the issue and downgraded the firmware to ,253 and no problems whatsoever.

can you downgrade to 253 and see if it works for you?

Issue Title: tracking issue index controllers and pimax

Description: tracking going in and out with one controller if I connect that controller directly to the headset tracking is 100%. This issue must be a direct issue with the wireless dongle in the headset since when bypassed via USB c cable everything works great. Pimax gave crazy solution to buy a dongle to fix this after I just paid 1000 dollars for this headset and have only had it for like 2 months.

If this is due to the steam dongles then pimax should have valve replace the dongles that are not working a quick check for these discontinued dongles are going for like 50 to 80 bucks for one when brand new they were 13 bucks.

Issue is that the receivers in the HMD aren’t USB dongles, but tiny surface mount radio chips. Disassembly and replacing that IC would be a net loss for Pimax (even with a 1,000 dollar hmd) so I don’t expect them to do that.

We still haven’t received a clear answer in confidence from Pimax on whether or not a software/firmware fix is possible. Being honest, your best bet is to buy a dongle. Is it ridiculous? Yes, I don’t plan on ever purchasing from Pimax again, the fact that they continue to sell index controllers borderlines illegality imo.

https://tundra-labs.com/shop/vive-dongle this is the cheapest option currently, and it looks way better than what I bought.

Well, apparently Pimax doesn’t want to assume this defect, there are some responses from the (helpful) support :

Hi XXXXX,

This problem is difficult to be solved by changing the software Settings. Our suggestion is to buy a Dongle (I have provided you with the picture) and install it on the helmet (I took the picture of the installation position for you). Its function is to enhance the signal, which may solve the problem of missing the handle

Miracle

Then after I ask why I have to buy a dongle (which is not sold anymore in europe) for a defective unit :

Hi XXXX,

It’s hard for me to confirm this is a pimax defects, because there is this problem is very rare, I give you is also a kind of by other tools to solve this problem, and I’m sorry, our company didn’t also not produce dongle, this problem I also feedback to development department, they give me a reply is also difficult to work out the problem of the rare, I’m sorry.

Miracle

Then after some insistance about the fact this is not rare, as seen in this forum, that I can’t buy a dongle, and strange that Pimax does’nt want to fix the issue :

Dear XXXX,

Firstly, we are sorry for the issue you have occurred. But I have checked your order and found it has passed the warranty period. We offer one year warranty. You received the item in March 2019, but you contacted us in June 2020. So I am really sorry we are unable to offer replacement. We really appreciate your understanding.

As our technical support told before, you can have a try to buy a Dongle and install it on the helmet . Its function is to enhance the signal, which may solve the problem of missing the handle. Thanks.

Best regards,

After that, there is nothing to add. Sadly. Even if in Europe the warranty have to be 2 years. 700€ for a defective headset. I didn’t see the problem before receiving my controllers.

Sry guys.

Could you send us the link to the dongle they gave you?

Thanks for sharing by the way.

They didn’t provide a link to buy a dongle, just pictures of what your headset looks like with :

I got the same email messages with the pictures of how I can pay extra to fix the issue that they should be resolving. but I just purchased mine so it is still under warranty. the best fix for Pimax is to mass order the dongles from the link that the guy above my post listed or directly from valve at a discount then they can provide the dongles to the customers with this issue and the fix wont cost them that much per customer. I will say this Pimax customer service has gotten way better in the ā€œtime to reply to a customerā€ catagory even though the replies are not making us happy.

Yes they are definitely improving. I’m sad to see their official stance is that they won’t be fixing this, but I bet it’s an impossible fix without proper dongles. It’s an absolute deal breaker for me ever considering another headset, and at this point I agree with you that they need to be doing more to fix the issue, even if it means including a steamvr tracking dongle (P.S Pimax, I’d be happy to design a dongle pcb and programming jig for you… you cannot keep relying on 3rd party solutions to YOUR problems. Dongle BOM is one active chip and ~10 passives, your engineers are certainly fully capable!)

Further, if I bought these controllers in a bundle with the HMD I would be demanding a refund, not an RMA. It’s defective out of the box and they are not fixing this problem. In fact, they removed the top USB-C port on the 8kx…
