@cmm posted how to remove the hmd by null settings. I know before controllers & trackers were able to be used without a headset.
not possible.
SteamVR will not allow this.
Problem you described is also affecting some vive users in the steam discussion your in
I would also compare with @Genesis as his post indicates he is having some kind of success though running pitool 121.
could the issue be related to this windows update?
CMM’s fix fixed my issue with Vive Trackers not pairing with Pimax.
The only difference is my steamvr settings file was in the Appdata and not in the Steam folder.
Much thanks.
If anybody needs help getting their vive trackers to pair just shoot me a message.
Happens to me too, I have to turn on the controllers to get the LHs detected.
I tried uninstalling / reinstalling PiTool and SteamVR,
while deleting PiTool’s AppData - Local, LocalLow & Roaming folders as well as anything “pitool” related.
While my 3 Trackers (version 1.0) are working beautifully with the Vive, the Pimax only remembers & allows one of them
I can’t pair the Trackers, because no HMD is found…
I tried @CMM 's script approach, but the .vrsettings files seem to be overwritten as soon as SteamVR complains about the missing HMD with an error message.
Also, as soon as I run the Pimax, bluetooth is broken in SteamVR (while it works fine with the Vive).
What a puzzle!! Thanks a million in advance for any updates on this
The Pimax view is really worth it
I will like to update and say me using knuckles controllers does infact not allow me to pair any more trackers so its just 2 controllers. I really would hope pimax gets in on fixing this issue?
Enabling the null driver should have removed the need for a physical HMD, thereby allowing the Trackers to pair.
Also verify that PiServiceLauncher is not running using Task Manager/Services
If .vrsettings files are being recreated, chances are high that the formatting was rejected.
Mind the commas and proper quotes.
Sometimes the vrsettings file is somewhere else instead of in the Steam folder.
Thank you so much for the detailed instructions!
I followed them accurately, but unfortunately I’m still out of luck…
-
As soon as the Vive is disconnected, SteamVR only identifies one of my three Trackers (i.e. its LED turns green & it shows up in the SteamVR panel).
-
The other two Trackers only light up in permanent blue.
-
I can get them to show up in the SteamVR panel by connecting/disconnecting them via cable, but if I intend to pair them, SteamVR’s “Pair Tracker” menu doesn’t open without the Vive connected (neither does the “Manage Vive Trackers” menu).
Sorry for spamming this thread!
It’s just driving me crazy that I now have to choose between the Pimax’ fantastic FOV and the bodily immersion of the Trackers which only seems possible using the Vive
It’s not hard just message me and I can help you out over teamspeak.
Hoooray - it’s working
I’m not sure if this is thanks to the new PiTool or a different order of installation, so - just to be sure / for the record - here’s what I did:
- I uninstalled the (old) PiTool and deleted all folders / files containing the search terms “pimax” and “pitool” from my harddrive.
- I verified the integrity of SteamVR’s local tool files.
- Using @CMM’s default.vrsettings / steamvr.vrsettings editing approach, I paired my two controllors & three trackers in SteamVR while the Pimax was plugged in but not yet set up.
- I installed the new PiTool & adjusted my personal settings.
- Now I always use SteamVR to control the HMD, controllers & trackers and only start the PiTool if I have to change settings.
This is how my working steamvr.vrsettings file looks like:

Thank you so much @bwinters89, @CMM, @SweViver for your advice on this as well as @TheExistedHim for the fantastic live walkthrough
I don’t know what I would have done without you, and now I’m so happy that I even did a video:
Pimax5K+ & HTC Vive Trackers in High Fidelity VR
Thanks for this! I wonder if this would also work for converting vive wands to trackers for NatLo, with Index controllers as controllers. The Pimax headset steals control of devices from the watchman dongles as soon as I turn it on.
Hi
Did anyone managed to connect index controllers + vive wands for feet tracking?
I can have only 2 controller at the same time…
Thanks!
FYI: PiTool beta 144 (better Vive Index Controller support) will lose one or more of your tracker pairings and this procedure no longer seems to work to re-connect them. If anyone finds a way, let us know.
I have the same problem, I thot it was only me, I notice if I have both trackers on, one of the vive wand will lose connection also
I restored my backup from before I had installed Pitool 144 and lost the vive trackers, but that also didn’t work! I’ve tried unplugging the Pimax and following the pairing instructions a million times in varying ways and cannot get it to work. If anyone knows how, please leave precise step by step instructions. My guess is Pimax with vive trackers is not compatible with the latest SteamVR but I don’t really know. It’s very frustrating as it use to work fine earlier this month.
Umfortunately may need to also rollback steam maybe as well?
How would I “rollback” steam? I can do a restore from backup, and I see ways to disable game updates, but how do you prevent the Steam CLIENT from updating itself?
