i think we would have to agree on the tags to use then we could all go in and tag them
i would tag the g3d and the z3d and immersive screen

That sounds good. Not that it matters because I trust that DrWilken is giving us good advice and would tag the correct games, but I will only have a Pimax 8KX HMD. I’m assuming that’s what p3d is indicating?
oh sorry i meant z3d
its like a kind of fake 3d mode that doesn’t look as good as G3d mode
Oh, now I get it. Yes, great idea!
Thanks cazman321! Great to read your detailed impressions. I play project cars 2 probably the most of all games (one day I want to visit the Nordschleife for real and rent a nice ride, the sim equipment is a nice training tool :))
Also very interesting to see you are running a 1080ti (which I have as well). You mentioned that you ran PC2 on small FOV. Did you attempt normal? Are you aiming for 75 FPS or using smartsmoothing/reprojection?
I’m not clear the best way to run Project Cars 2 on pimax hardware. I’ve seen people say it needs parallel projection enabled, and I’ve also seen reference to using a hack to launch the oculus version instead of steamVR version in order t skip PP. How do you do it?
I can try Normal, however, PC2 is terribly optimized when in the dark/rain/weather/clouds for any headset. Runs fine during the day with not many weather changes, so even large would probably work. Using PP.
With the Index I brought it down to 80Hz and subsampled to 90% SS…still tons of lag at night (especially the Nurburgring).
With the 8KX I brought it down to around 40% (around the resolution I used with the Index) But again, more detail in the distance, yet some aliasing. I’m sure I can bump that up to the SteamVR recommended setting of something in the 50’s, and would perform fine besides night time/rain/weather.
I tried the Oculus non-PP hack before and I don’t think it worked for me. Doing that for DiRT Rally didn’t let me reset my position correctly. I also saw threads where people said it didn’t save much performance that way anyway.
Cool, thanks for the info. Likely to upgrade to 3080 if the performance rumours are on point, hopefully that makes for a decent experience on PC2 with the 8KX.
Not sure if You’ve seen it but there’s some hints in this thread:

… and this specific post in that thread:

I’ve done most of those, but it’s really an issue with the game engine…probably my older CPU and DDR3 can’t handle it or something. Consoles couldn’t even handle the game very well.
I got my 8KX today but I won’t be opening it until I get a 3080 or better. I already liquidated my 1080 Ti and the old RX 580 I am using cannot be allowed to be my first experience. I will definitely provide a mini review, hopefully within the next month.
good call
looks like my 1080ti will be worthless with Ampere here so I may just pass down to my 7 year old to play his roblox with
yeah, up to this point my hope had been to sell my 1080ti for hopefully around 400 to help fund a new GPU purchase but the price/performance of the 3070 has totally tanked the market value for a used 1080ti now. I’d probably be lucky to get 200 for it.
Damn, I was too busy laughing at 2080ti owners to realize my 1080ti is next to worthless now too
If 2080ti owners are bothered by the price drop due to the 30 series, they shouldn’t have bought a 2080ti in the first place. Price/performance ratio is always terrible for the best cards, so only buy them if the price tag isn’t a big deal to you.
When I upgrade my gfx card I usually gift my old one to a good friend or family member who’s still on an older generation. So I’m really glad with the seemingly considerable jump in performance with the 30 series. I just hope I’ll be able to buy one before the supply runs out.
it could still happen that 2080ti owners laugh back (compared to the 3080 Power)
To add to my initial comments I posted neat the top of this thread:
I have improved the settings & fit a bit , they convergence issue is not gone 100% but less intrusive, and the sweet spots match a bit better now. And as I mentioned elsewhere, I need to wear my reading glasses as I would otherwise lose acuity due to my impaired eye-sight.
My following brief observations where made comparing the 8KX to the Index:
Virtual Desktop: on the 8KX, Virtual Desktop, when blown up to cover a FoV of roughly 140°, showing my monitor screen @4K with 150% Scope & Layout setting under Windows, lets me read the names under the icons easily, they appear crisp and sharp. If I use Desktop Viewer tool of SteamVR instead, it will be readible to some degree, but clearly poorer than on the former.
On the Index, Virtual Desktop resembles pretty much the impression I had of Desktop Viewer on the 8KX.
DCS: I am not familiar with DCS, so had no experience about the settings. Dstar kindly advised me to try PD1.3 in DCS/VR settings, 1.25-1.5 in PiTool and a lesser SS in SteamVR. I went with 60% in SteamVR, 1.5 Pitool. It resulted in 10 fps so clearly not yet there in terms of performance, but that wasn’t my focus. (for the record: i7-6700K, 2080Ti, none of them OC’ed).
With these settings I could read the gauges pretty well, and e.g. the greenly lit buttons on the left hand side (Nose, Left, Right, etc.) were readible (not super-crisp but you could read it with a bit of effort). On the right-hand side, where you have 7 settings to the right of the hook lever, it was crisp and perfectly readible. I will have to check the Index in DCS again because my attempt with it was still at PD1.0. But in any case, irrespective of the actual detail, the absence of SDE does help in this kind of
scenario because I found the SDE as such to be a distractive element when looking at specific gauges or buttons.
While these two surely are use cases which benefit a lot from the additional resolution of the 8KX, I would want to say for 80-90% of the use cases I would think the Index and probably also the Rift S & Odyssey already provide a level of detail which is okay and I am not yet convinced that it would be worth spending 1,300$ for an upgrade if you already own e.g. an Index. Unless of course you are going to use it mainly for Flight or Racing sims. And - for me personally - the G2 may be a true dark horse here because if that one is free of any convergence issues, much easier to handle in day2day operation (here’s hoping that PE will equal the playing field a bit) and offers the same or even better acuity, I might be willing to let go of the wide FoV in return.
Btw, the comparison of the sound when using the 8KX with SMAS and Index in short time-frame sure highlighted the dire need the 8KX has for a proper sound solution. I am curious to read how the KDMAS/DMAS will perform - we should hopefully see it being released soon. But I would want to read it from those who didn’t already tell me how great the SMAS was… because it simply isn’t. Just the same as the Rift S and Quest sound, they all simply suck.
I don’t understand people who receive an exciting new product after waiting several months for it and then have the patience to wait another 2 to 3 weeks or so for a 3080. Like wtf.
It’s almost like they’re bragging they have a toy that many others want, but they decided not to play with it…I mean what if something is wrong with the headset? They won’t even know it until weeks/months later, then they’ll have to wait for a replacement/support/etc. Oh well.
Impressions:
Got the headset yesterday, fired it up today in my spare time.
Tried 1.25 PiTool setting and noticed SteamVR recommending low SS value. Ran Il2 BoS with PiTool at 1, Normal FOV and 50% SteamVR SS.
Coming from a 8K it is nice. The comfort strap is nice but took a little to get used to after the basic head strap of the 8K. Main thing so far is clarity of image. I will experiment with PiTool 1.25 and SteamVR 50% and see how that looks.
Using no ingame AA - the VR world is crisp and frames on my 2080 are relatively decent.
Not sure if I like the nose bridge blockout cloth, although it does block out light, there is less space for the headset to breath and I didn’t mind the small light leakage with the 8K Have to see if it comes out easily or not.
Haven’t tried the built in speakers but noticed my AKG 712’s sit nicely and comfortably over the head strap. All good there. Also much less gyro drift. Still waiting on base stations to come in. Anyway - I am happy and will see how it beds in before giving any further appraisal. With the 4K native mode, in game AA should be reasonable unlike on the 8K and there will be / is much less shimmering which was due to the 8K up-scaler.
Thanks to the Pimax guys for bring this beauty to my hands.
