Too quiet on the reviews & impressions front

It’s been too long since we’ve had some new reviews & user impressions!

I think it will be a number of weeks before I get to try the 8KX myself… (SO4610 on Oct 30, but made a change in January and got pushed back in the queue apparently, ahh well, life’s too short to sweat these things

So with all these 8KX’s in the mail now, due to arrive soon, give us poor waiting folk something to drool over! Looking forward to a new wave of impressions of the hardware. And heck, if those who already own one are willing to give some impressions after a few weeks of use, even better!

yes, lately there have only been unboxing videos. Who needs that?
Reviews, we want reviews! xD

Every time, if I search real infos about a product and find only UNBoXInG vids, I feel like …

Me too. I placed an upgrade order in January, so we both will have to wait about the same amount of time.

The anticipation is really getting to me. I haven’t been in VR in over a week, because my 8K just isn’t appealing anymore. All I see is SDE. The sad thing is that I recently got Index controllers and started playing Half-Life: Alex, but at this point, I’m probably going to wait until I get my 8KX, before I continue with the game.

I could give some impressions, but I am still working on getting the best fit to banish the convergence issue I perceive, and ideally get the left & right inner sweet spots to match better.

Hence no review from me because I feel it may see improvements over my current experience.

To just give a glimpse:

Pro‘s:

  • hardly any SDE (as I am now wearing my reading glasses (for working at my computer) with the 8KX I can actually see the pixel pattern if I look for it on uniform light patches but it‘s no comparison to e.g. the Index‘ SDE where it was pretty in your face when putting on the Index again)
  • Comfort
  • no glare

50/50:

  • colors, black: colors are not as vibrant as the Index‘, but for me good enough to not long for more; blacks are okay too but not OLED.
  • resolution: I need to properly test it but so far the fact that I can‘t focus with both eyes and see the same object through the inner sweet spot of the respective lens has given me a feeling of not being at 100% clarity/acuity. But I need to do more tweaking the fit, and await the PE IPD adjustment tools to find better settings.

Con‘s:

  • for me convergence is still an issue, but perhaps the above-mentioned tools will help.
  • sound (SMAS): Rift S quality, at least in terms of bass. Not worthy of an 800$ headset. Wait, the 8KX is even more expensive, isn‘t it…
  • Mura: even after applying the settings PimaxQuorra suggested, I still see some Mura. But is rather subtle due to the fine resolution so not a bigger issue. But ideally it just wouldn‘t be noticeable.

Well I’m in good company then

Interestingly, I’ve been in and out of that same loop probably a half dozen times. I don’t need to remind you it has been a pretty long wait from the late 2019 delivery Pimax initially expected for the 8K+ I originally ordered (I did eventually change to the 8KX). So I’ve had plenty of time to go through the loop of “I’ll wait, the new headset is just around the corner…”

Over time, I jump back in to my driving simulator, and just have a blast. I’m still saving some games like HL Alyx (I did play a few hours, couldn’t resist), and a few others like Lone Echo, although I read one impression saying it didn’t hold up as well as others to the 8KX’s high res. We’re on the home stretch now though :crossed_fingers:, so not long until I can see for myself. And hey, perhaps we’ll get to use the DMAS right out of the box by the time orders reach us. Glass half full :sunglasses:

To put it in perspective, I’m still rocking my original vive (jump back into that sweet wide-FOV 8k you have!) I’ve bought lots of expensive driving equipment since then, and been holding out for that special HMD to complete the setup. Really look forward to some sim driving perspectives on the 8KX as more people get theirs.

Cheers, thanks for taking the time to give some more impressions!

My expectations are tempered. I do think it will be very cool to see the inside of the car cockpits and into the distance finally. But I’m more excited perhaps for the sense of speed that peripheral vision brings to the table. I think that is likely an underappreciated aspect (at least in the masses) of these headsets for sim driving use.

I do lie on the lower end of the IPD range, ~61mm, so I get that there is a risk here of not perfect sweet spot alignment with both eyes… but frankly, I already have that issue with my Vive, so if for me, if it is similar to that or better, I’m ok with that. Looking forward to the Pimax Experience to help dial that aspect in, right from the get-go.

I think the 8KX will be a big improvement for driving games. While I appreciated the wide FOV in Assetto Corsa, ultimately, the lack of clarity on the distant horizon sent me back to my 4K flat screen.

dstar, I hope you get over that very, very soon.

samyrden, I know exactly what you mean about saving some games. I have a whole library of games, a huge number, that I’m just not playing until I get my 8KX. Once it arrives, I imagine I’ll be something of a hermit. I may not come out of my cave for half a year.

Me too and I did the same thing after pre-ordering the 5K+ many moons ago… :slightly_smiling_face:

Some games, like SkyrimVR, I’ve never played yet even though I’ve had them a very long time…

This time, I won’t wait for the “next big thing”… :upside_down_face::wink:

 today I setup OG Vive & played coupled of hours just to remember how it looks. If all you see is SDE on 8K I guess OLED hmds aren’t for you  on Vive I guess your eyes would start bleeding

But actually it was nice experience, resolution is aweful, but feeling of presense, brightness & vibrant colours were good. I just reccommended my friend today as he couldn’t grab Quest (by my reccomendatino as well) to et 300$ preownsed og vive kit for 2 base stations & controllers, he will sell HMD later, but while he waits he can experience VR & play some games.

I almost bought 8k today but had bad luck on ebay. I want to compare 8k & 5k+ & sell of of those, I anticipate I will choose 8k due to more warm colour & pentile pattern which I appreciate in VR as i makes picture uniform & helps with aliasing. I guess I will wait for a while before buying 8kX, more chances that they will fix hardware bugs + prices may be cut.

I also played yesterday with index for 4hrs, even if I can tune gamma in some games & fine tune colour to be more warm & more bright, colours still look not enough good for me. I played pavolv & it feels wrong. Image is sharp, all is good, but aliasing, vertical lines & LCD (sighs …). I wonder whether 8k really so bad in terms of SDE, 5k+ looks more or less ok but I really don’t like it’s brick grid, it kills all RGB stripe benefits for me, it’s just too prominent.

@Teigue where do you live?
At eBay Germany is an 8K+ with DAS for a really fair price.

I don’t want 8+ I want original 8k, I got my paypall blocked due to new law in my couuntry & applying documents & checks still didn’t finish (already lasts 19 days) they say it won’t take more than 30days though & on ebay Visa cards unlikely almost not applicable without paypal. I saw 8k with das for good price but wasnt able to buy it due to this paypal mess

HAHAHA, I have SkyrimVR, and I also haven’t played it yet. Since it looks like the 8KX is really being shipped now, I think I’ll buy the vorpX app to try on my regular games. Have you heard of it, and have you tried it? There are so many games I’d like to see in VR. I don’t know where I’m going to start. One of the games I’d like to see the most, is one of the simplest ones, “Inside”. Just to see it as though I’m there will be quite amazing, I think.

I think it’s wise to wait until the bugs are fixed. That’s why I don’t get too terribly upset that I’m not the first to receive my 8KX.

Yes, I’ve played a few games through VorpX… :upside_down_face: :+1:

I’ve even made collections for them in Steam

Geo3D supported games are by far the best IMHO…

The list of vorpX supported games is to long to show as a screenshot

P.S. We should probably keep this in a separate thread as to not clutter this one. I can split the topics/threads if needed.

P.P.S. Haven’t played all of them either… I’m a collector of sorts

That’s a good idea to make a collection of them in Steam. Do you mind telling me what those thirty games are, and whether there are some that may not be worth the frustration?

I guess you were answering my question even before I asked it. It looks like you and I have the same taste in games.
