Steam Hardware Survey not recognising Pimax HMD

Just had Steam request participation in their hardware survey. Guess what was not listed in my hardware???

VR Hardware. It was determined non was detected. I ran it a few times going back with making sure my Pimax 8K was turned on and PiTool was running. Still nothing listed.

Do we have to have SteamVR running for it to be noticed? It picked up other hardware no problems except mis identifying my laptop but the CPU and all was correct.

Pity they don’t allow user input for the survey to correct detection issues.

I noticed the same thing.

Damn good point. That being said they don’t recognize the Rift S either. I SteamVr doesn’t recognize the Pimax how do we expect customers to.

Does anyone else find it disturbing that a headset branded as SteamVR compatible is NOT compatible with 100% of steamVR games?

The Valve index also isnt compatible with all games, btw it too does not show up in the survey.

I think this is just valve being lazy with adding the strings to their database.

I assume thats the main reason.
For some additional compatibility (if needed), try using the option Vive HMD mode in PiTool, that makes the Pimax appear as HTC Vive in Steam VR.

Thing is we want Steam Surveys to know what hardware we are using and for them to take note. Pimax is what I use and I will not spoof a Vive HMD for some HMD recognition.

P1ss Poor effort on the part of Steam Surveys.

According to Steam surveys there are 0 Pimax headsets being used.

Guess it’s “a niche of a niche in a niche”. *rolleyes

Point is, these polls are irrelevant. Yet, used by developers to determine what to adjust for. And a lot of the VR games still have too short object culling over the large FOV. Problematic.

you mean the option “compatible with Vive only game” ?

Good point…I asked myself what this is good for and what it actually does…

So they just added Rift S and Index headsets…still no Pimax…

Add more fuel to my fire about Pimax not being officially supported bt SteamVr. pitool is just a hack to make wide fov work.

not unlike how alvr or virtual desktop creates a fake HMD for purposes of streaming.

Official Pimax support would come with an icon on steamVR games announcing compatibility.

maybe we’ll get there if Pimax stops messing around release a million HMDs and just focuses and finishing one damned product.

where are my controllers and lighthouses!:rage:

Maybe the hardware visibility is not a free subscription.

Yes, exactly  sorry my incorrect naming of the option…

Its not a hack. Pimax is working closely with Valve on many SteamVR features. Im not aware of the reason why Pimax is not yet added as a supported device, but I assume its just a matter of time, especially since Rift S just got that “support” recently. I guess Valve is finally updating the Steam pages. Its about time…

You seem to be sure ^^ Is it just an impression or do you heard something?

Korgen, do a little search on SweViver and then you will know his relationship with Pimax.

SweViver now works for Pimax, but apparently has a deal that allows him to be independent, with regards to his YouTube videos.

@blitze no need to be patronizing.

@neal_white_iii I already know that, but it doesnt mean that Pimax tells everything to Martin and btw we talk about a potential Valve decision. If someone gave the info to him, it’s Valve and not Pimax, I guess…

@PimaxUSA stated recently that most of Pimax’s work with Valve is with their engineers, and not their sales/marketing people. Knowing that Valve’s corporate “structure” is held together with string, it’s not surprising that the engineers and marketers might not be in communication. It would still be good to have such a “simple” thing addressed to increase Pimax’s legitimacy.

@PimaxUSA - Something in the recent SteamVR update has not bode well for FFR in Il2 and SteamVR Home which I can’t run unless I bang PiTool render down to 1.

FFR was hit and miss with Il2 anyway but now, for high render resolution targets which were fairly playable when Il2 was stable - no longer. Instead we get studdering or flickering of the image. Similar issues with SteamVR Home but Virtual Desktop and Assetto Corsa seemed ok from my testing.

Just a heads up. I know the Il2 gang are doing some large work on the Graphics Engine for a big release late September if things go well. Hopefully they will also make things more friendly for Canted HMD’s and FFR.:anguished:

See below:

As Pimax and Valve engineers has a close communication from what I have heard as well, I assume the lack of “official support” on Steam is something being worked on already. I cant see any reason why Pimax wouldnt be added to the support list on Steam. The Parallell Projection (or canted displays) is not causing this as Index uses basically the same solution, a Parallell Projection mode which is enabled by default.

The team is aware of this problem already, thanks!
