STAR WARS: Squadrons Discussion

Theres almost no discernable difference from high to ultra by the way. You’re just pushing pc resources more.

My impression is that I get a clearer picture with higher in-game vr rendering resolution and lower steamvr settings. I’ve pushed my in-game rend.res to 140 and lowered steamvr to 40% which is 2064x2496 with small fov.

This is with lightning low, and most other settings at medium. Seems pretty much stable at 75 and GPU utilisation around 75 to 85, but with some rare spikes to 96 and fps drops to 70. Its a bit weird, as I would’ve thought it was enough headroom as I get 75-85 fps most of the time.

Ye i agree. Thats why I tried 60% and 120% in game. Except my 3090 is usually at 95-98% utilization so i think you have some more room unless cpu is bottlenecked?

I use normal fov though so that could make the difference

From what I can observe in FpsVR I do not seem to be cpu-limited, but there is something going on that I can’t figure out. In assetto Corsa competizione when I increase the resolution the increase in GPU utilization at 75hz seems pretty linear, but at when I increase resolution past a certain point it seems like the linearity goes out the window and GPU utilization jumps quite a bit more than I expect. When I monitor my CPU with another utility in the same session it shows the cpu cores highest utilisation which is at 100 percent even though that isn’t the reading I get in FpsVR. What driver version are you using Mike?

The latest nvidia driver

Hey Mike, just curious, have you been playing today? And if so any issues?
Yesterday evening I was playing fine with your settings, getting smooth 75 fps with the occasional dip here or there with 60% steamvr ss and 115 intake.
Today I boot the game up and… I’m not even getting getting 75 fps in the main menu with 100% in game ss.
I’ve reinstalled the game, pitool, steamvr…nothing. Questionning my sanity at this point…
According to FpsVr steam ss gets bumped to 100 as soon as I launch the game but no idea why or how to prevent it…

Not yet. Ill try later today

Someone else saw a change in iracing also. 75 down to 30’s but his issue sounds like SS value changed by itself. Check the resolution in steamVR. Maybe they changed the rendered resolution at 60% again?

Yeah with the kids and stuff I only had a few minutes at a time to look into it.
The settings in steamvr looked fine, I checked the settings file and the only thongs that moved were the gpuhorsepower and targetrenderscale (from 2700 to 2000 and 1.5 to 1.15 or so).
I only noticed the steamvr ss in fpsvr reading 60 in steam vs home then 100 when in game, so that might be it.
Anyway, we’ve got similar specs ( I have a r3900x and 3090) so I’m curious if you’re having it too. Either way could point me to the right direction.

Same here (with the kids) - i just tried 3 rounds and all is good here. same as i left it last week. Im using 50% steamVR SS and i believe 110% in game (on a 3090) - flat 75fps.

BTW Virpil is a relatively small company that is Based in Lithuania, Belarus. They are a startup from 2016, Like Pimax. I am very impressed with the quality and innovation of their products and customer service. From ordering to shipping was 1.5 months.

Besides VR, Space and Flightsims just got a huge immersion bump. Off the charts build quality.

Fantastic game now that most quirks has been sorted out ! But… 8KX does not fare very well in this title imho… I’m actually using my Odyssey+ instead and achieve a much better experience over all. Reason is the weight of the 8KX (It’s a brick!) My neck starts hurting after a couple of hours… Main reason I prefer the OD+ though is the 90Hz. 75Hz is not enough in this very (!!) high paced game. Visuals come second here. For story mode, the 8KX is great, but it’s way too chunky for online dog fighting.

Not sure i agree with that, but to each his own. I wear the 8k x for 1-1.5hrs at a time with no issues and i cant go back to the clarity and smaller fov, of previous generations.

Star wars squadrons isn’t fast paced action like call of duty, so i couldnt disagree more with that statement unfortunately.

But you can look at the pimax 5k super then. First vr panels to hit 180hz.

To each his own, of course. It’s fine until you get advanced behind the sticks. Then you move your head around the cockpit as fast as your neck allows you and the stick is all over the place. It really depends on your play style and skill level, for me, flying the X-Wing with main focus on maneuverability I notice screen tearing with the 75Hz. For bombers\slow play style and story I would agree 8KX is better.

I’m baffled every time I put the OD+ back on how good that HMD actually is…
