Samsung Odyssey+ Discussion. Review - Through the lens comparison

Why do you need your monitor connected at all? I don’t even turn on my monitor most of the time. I know not a long term solution but at least till you get the adapter

Some parts of the setup only can be completed on the monitor. It even shows it inside the HMD “Take off your headset and follow instructions on your monitor” But yeah I guess once everything is setup correctly you might not need it indeed. Good point, will try that

I think you’ll be a lot happier with it once you figure out the comfort. For me, I just added an extra face cushion. Others wear the back further down and then use velcro to pull the bottom closer. Once you fix the comfort it mostly fixes the sweet spot issue as well. Still isn’t close to pimax 5k+ clarity and has blurriness on the edges of the lenses but it’s not terrible.

Yeah comfort definitely is the number 1 issue at the moment. I think the problem is that Samsung made the HMD for a certain width of faces. In my case (and much others) I think my face is not wide enough so the strap can’t distribute the weight and it presses just on my fore head. Kind of crazy that such a big company like Samsung couldn’t get it right on their V2 of their headset … I never really liked the Pimax 5k+ comfort but compared to the O+ its’ infinitely better.

You’re right. First mod I just tried, I replaced the foam with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0744B6PSQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and man that’s really a game changer already, it’s much easier to enjoy a HMD when you’re not in pain and agony  That Samsung foam is so damn hard, man what were they thinking …

It’s true, is incredible to make this big fail in confort by samsung, they didnt take this seriously at all…

But as I said, they are not bad at all, taking the price… once you fight the first days with mocosoft software…

You’ll need to check the HMD via steam, unfortunaly it doesn’t really shine in the WMR portal. You’ll get kinda grasp, when setting to beta, but it is not close as soon you have Steam SS applied. The comfort feels like a bitch at first but with a little routine + probably minor modifications like another facepad/cover it’s gonna be ok. If ur controllers get jumpy try to fiddle with ur lighting.WMR seem to be more sensitive than Vive.

Yeah i see it now, it works in steamVR (didnt work in the MS portal though). Anyway at least that helps with dialing in the right IPD. That MS portal is really really bad, man, it never stops to amaze me how one of the biggest and most valuable multi billion dollar companies can’t write decent software.

Do you have the 1809 version of Windows? It added a lot of WMR enhancements, the biggest that you can put links to SteamVR games in the Windows environment, and also when you press the windows button on the controller it brings up a menu instead of going straight back to the Windows environment

Oh… I never go to Cliff-House, I normally go straight into SteamVR. Cliff-House is really annoying. It’s like you’re being in VR house-arrest… you can’t leave your home. I agree, it’s a complete waste unless you really really want to use the MS-Store to buy a VR app for some strange reason.

You need to use the Odyssey a little while before you can really judge it. It was the same with the original. It takes time to know how to precisely place it on your head to get the best viewing… that sucks I know… but it is what is. With the Original it was made easier when VR-Cover made a custom face cushion for it. It really helped with the comfort. That VR-Cover face cushion however does not work well with the OD+ because it leaves a large gap on the sides amounting to a huge amount of light leaks. I’m hoping VR cover comes up with a new version for the OD+.

Thanks guys for all the tips and tricks, it really changes the game for me. Now I can at least enjoy the HMD comfortable (with the replacement foam) and SteamVR works (teamviewering into the PC), I’m actually starting to enjoy the HMD. One KEY point where this HMD easily beats all the competition (including pimax) is movies! Wow, if any of you guys bought the Pimax for watching porn, you bought the wrong HMD  It just looks SO much better on the O+. For games I still think I prefer the 5k+, for it’s quite a bit sharper (and wider of course). However objects nearby look much better on the O+.

All-in-all I’ve really changed my impression after the first deception  This HMD does own its place and brings some nice new things to the table for sure!

The Vive gives you the option. My Vive is run on DP to keep HDMI free for my display.

Please post a pic of your head lol

If it can alleviate your deception, I’m really glad because I’m hoping to have your impressions about the SDE of the 5K+ vs OD+. It will confirm or not my choice of the 5K+

Your comments are about right but you must respect that it’s only 2 cameras doing the tracking if you use the flashlight option you can see the field of view of those cameras and understand the limits no magic here.

The tracking work well inside those limits and not to close to the headset
but yes no comparison to valve tracking.

By the way would you be kind enough to give me the dimensions of the 5k+ lens?

This is the issue I mentioned in my review. Would the 5K+ serve as a better compliment to the O+ or the 8K? Use the 5K+ for gaming and the O+ for movies. If you don’t have an O+ then perhaps the 8K is better all round?

You can understand now why I see a real value in a diffusion filter for the 5k+.

The OD+ is the first headset that gives me a really nice immersion for applications like movies and Apollo 11, Titanic etc. .

SDE wise, the OD+ is better than the 5K+ or the 8K. Clarity wise, I think even the 8K is better than the OD+, but it’s close to the 8K.

is the screendoor much worse with the 5kplus versus the odyssey plus?
