Quest 2 Discussion, will it beat the G2?

There’s no way I’d ever buy a Facebook headset…

Gotta hand it to them though, they’ve done a fine job with the quest creating a headset targeting the average Joe.

Only enthusiasts would invest in a high end HMD let alone a high end PC.

I’d guess that the Quest 2 will decrease image quality in untethered mode or run out of juice quickly.

Nice timing though. I sold my Quest a couple of hours before the leak. I will not buy Quest 2 but it’s good for VR getting more traction despite the “make a deal with the devil”-part.

G2 pre-ordered and that one is actually exciting.

I will get the G2, but the Quest 2 is intruiging and I will get one too. For me they don’t compete because my current Quest is a device I use where my PC VR headsets cannot go - outside of my PC space.

As for the G2, it will end up in a shoot-out with the Index and 8KX, last (possibly two) man/men standing…

Exciting news, and really great that they are pushing the envelope also on the most mainstream VR option we have today. Even if it is linked to Facebook, but still, this will help VR get into the heads of all the tech-loving geeks out there. And if they despise Facebook, but tried a Quest 2 and were impressed - they will start to look for alternatives. Win - win.

Current pricing leaks indicate a 300 dollar model at 64 gb, which is absolutely ridiculous if true. The plastic seems to be lower quality, tbh i hate the white coloring.

My replacement quest (post rma) has some nasty blurring/persistence. If this is still 72hz I’m not biting, but if its 90 at that resolution I will. I’d love some more details on link too.

My understanding is that link is inherently bottlenecked by the USB controllers in the HMD. Even with USB 2.0, link doesn’t push the bandwidth limitations, only using like 100 MB/s. There is a TON of room for improvement over a USB-C line, and I bet they’ve made those improvements, but I’m waiting to hear it.

There is an assumption on one of the German VR websites (VRLegion.de) which sees Facebook announce two lines of stand-alone headsets:

  • Quest Lite (starting at 299$)
  • Quest 2

That would make sense, because Facebook want to lure masses into VR too, which the cheaper Quest Lite version would relate to. And by the way, Palmer Luckey also issued a tweet about this being a ballpark week… remember, Rift CV1 was thought to be coming at around 350$…

I really like my Quest 1, but they have really tightened the Facebook links with Quest 2. IMHO it’s crossed the line from Oculus Quest to Facebook Quest. Whilst the new specs look very good - I will try hard to resist.

My understanding is (puts tin hat on and ducks) - Facebook openly admit they will constantly record everything you do and say on their new platform Horizon? I find that creepy and sadly with their track record just don’t trust them :pensive:

They’ve already changed it to facebook login being required with quest 1, I don’t know of any differences on new devices.

As far as being always recorded with Horizon, I’m sure that’s the case. It’s not that big of a deal imo as that is just a social app. It’s like “this phone call is being recorded for quality assurance purposes” - I quite highly doubt they’re spying on people, but they definitely will make models of human behavior, and have recordings to ensure people follow their rules. They constantly watch what you post on facebook, and I’m sure the AI can hear what you say. I’m okay with that, I don’t think 12 year olds should be hearing certain things :stuck_out_tongue:

I thought it was this below could be wrong…

“Anyone who purchases a new Oculus device after October 2020 will be required to log into the VR platform using Facebook , the social media giant announced on Tuesday. This consolidation won’t be forced on veteran VR -gamers immediately, who can continue using their existing Oculus accounts until January 1, 2023.”

I’m a veteran

Good catch, my brain perceived it as everyone with an oculus device after oct 2020, quite a difference from jan 2023. Doesn’t bother me, but I can see why it would bother others!

If this has 90Hz without Link and more FOV than Index I may just have to bite(especially at that $299 price if true)…I’d like to use mobile VR for quick sessions…and then use the 8KX for more fast-paced intense games/simracing where I wouldn’t trust Link/Wifi connectivity or the tracking.

I think the Quest has been an excellent entry point for those who want to try VR so I’m really excited to pick up a Quest 2 when it releases. For quick portable VR the Quest is just great.

Facebook login being mandatory makes this dead on arrival for me.

I just sold my Quest last week because of that decision. Looks like it was a good move.

wow, i wasn’t expecting this, yet another reason pimax needs to hurry the F up,

by the time 5k+ and 8k was in our hands their 1440p screens were already standard. And now it seems with HP and now oculus. 4k is the standard.

how does Pimax keep being beaten to the punch all the time.

if it has ipd adjustment ill be getting another quest

It seems to have three settings (like low, normal, wide IPD or 1,2,3) judging by the previously leaked images of it.
