Digital Foundry had a development team on the other day, by the way, who had updated their older game for the PSVR2, and they swore by the foveated rendering, which gives me hope for that feature for the future. :7
They had also updated their gaze event triggers to take the eyetracking into account, and not just head pose, as well as used it as a guide when grabbing ledges, supplementing the hand tracking…
(EDIT: …but no dynamic depth of field. (EDIT3: Oh, and, uhm - just to be clear: When I write that, I do not mean actual DOF – just a plain bokeh effect, whose focal plane is governed by the user’s convergence (not accomodation)))
MRTV just confirmed he would choose PSVR2 over the crystal. Figured PSVR2 would be a much better headset overall. Pimax still has a lot of learning to do! It will likely be impossible for a company like Pimax to ever compete with the build quality, research and delivery of someone like Sony.
It really validates my thoughts that Pimax has bitten off way more than they should with this array of products they are developing in parallel. Sony themselves basically focused HARD on a few key things and got them ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. Pimax should be doing the same in my opinion.
The PSVR2 sounds fine, but I’m having trouble seeing a strong appeal.
Sebastian’s praise basically comes down to it having pretty colors and being comfortable. If I was to extrapolate and add my own inferences, it’s a better Index. Something that feels polished and pleasant (at the expense of potential and the ‘ceiling’ of the experience).
I’m sure it will do well and I’m hopeful it will move VR in a positive direction. But for me personally, there’s no competition between what Sony is doing and what Pimax are attempting.
Like many enthusiasts, I want immersive FOV, to run on high end hardware, and I want godrays to die in a fire. If I want a pleasant experience, I can pick up a Pico.
If I want an awesome experience, I have to go with a product that takes a few chances. In an ideal world we would get the holy union of these two concepts, something with polished and perfected technology that also delivers exceptional results. Maybe in 5-10 years, we’ll finally get both.
Do they need to? From what I read Sony has no intentions much like there PSVR1 to support it as a PCVR device. So unless it is hacked into pc space the PSVR2 is not a threat to pcvr companies. It is too bad Sony seems to be so shortsighted.
I wonder whether the PSVR2 lenses have the treatment Sony had a patent filed for, whereby the “tips” of all the the frensel lens segments would be dabbed with black paint, to dampen the glare… -Seb’s talk of such glare makes me think they don’t, but that’s almost entirely unsubstantiated guesswork.
I always figured that for such a solution to work satisfactorily, it would be the whole fault line wall between segments that would need to be blackened (likely resulting in occasionally visible black circles, where the glare used to be, as a side effect), and not the crests, but what the heck do I know – I think the optics experts at one of the world’s largest camera developers/manufacturers juuust may grok a bit more than some random loudmouth nobody on an obscure internet forum…
Either way, it is promising to hear there is finally a decently bright HMD again… :7
Sony is not short-sighted LOL. They simply just put out top-tier quality products and fund top-tier software for their platform. Worked with PSVR1 and it’s going to work even better this time. They will do this ad-nauseam. There is nothing short sighted about it (from a corporate perspective anyway).
So like Apple no threat to PC. So yes since Sony ditched pc support it is short sighted as the psvr1 once ppl hacked support for it was quite decent when powered by a good pc. But too late to be of real use.
MS at least released a pc version of the Kinect. If Sony delayed pc support for 1 year for ps5 exclusive they could make a mint on pc as well.
i hate to say this but he over hypes things too fast(i bought some headsets because of his reviews, but they werent that great at all!)
I will get my psr2 today or tommorow so i can do a good comparison with the crystal when i get mine to test.
One thing i realy like is about the psvr2 that it is almost plug and play…No more playing with pc settings or pitool settings to get a good performance.
All the futures together eyetracking, headsetrumble, haptik feedback are nice to have so its a realy nice package together.
But one thing i know i will going to hate is the mura, ghosting because the reprojection, and seeing pixels on the psvr 2…
But i hope there are coming some realy great games for the psvr2 because on the pc there is almost nothing like a good AA title(except halflife alex ofcourse)
So i got the psvr2 today i tried it with grand turismo, horizon call off the mountain and resident evil village…
And just what i thought its overhyped again!
I dont get it why people can stand that much MURA its destroys the picture to much for me…Also the reprojection when moving hands etc and look at them they are ghosting, for me immersion breaking!
What i did realy liked is the eyetracking that works great and very fast, you wont see it.Also the setup was very easy and plug and play…
The tracking was okay, but only if you enable in the menu when the psvr2 is connected enable tracking support…(its under accesoires under psvr2) before that i was loosing tracking with the controllers…
The brightness i also realy loved and the blacks(wow this i realy miss in the current headsets) But again it get completly destroyed by the mura !
Grand turismo was great with all the details on the car,it would be my number one vr driving game…But again destroyed by the mura for me…
The headset rumble is also a nice addon…And the field off view is okay, better then the quest for my headshape.
I am gonna test it some more, but i think i sell my complete ps5,psvr2 kit…Its not that sharp (even in the sweetspot) i think its because off the mura…
the mura is insane honestly i cant believe they shipped it like that,i go back and forth with my 8kx and its soo much more clear, shame on those blacks but they are also ruined beacause the mura.
