Word of advice: don’t share too much if anything on what you find here (not sure if there is an NDA in place or not).
During the 8K/5KS beta program the three ‘musketeers’ did eventually find themselves in a difficult spot where they wanted the HMD to finally release as much as anyone else on this forum (yes, history does repeat itself) and at some point were being faced with a similarlevel of vitriol as Pimax themselves were.
I can speak from personal experience during that time as I also received a 5KS in advance and had my man @Djonko call me ‘slack3r’ for not sharing as much as what he personally deemed sufficient
That would be the m1 which was very poorly setup. The m2 at the berlin backer meet was ready as the backers there green lit it with the 3 Musketeers as no other testers opted to goto the meet.
Though the m2 was modified prior to shipping as at the backer meet it had the presence sensor removed that sone games used.
Haha. I remember the discussions on the ‘closed forum’ (which was not so closed at all). And it seemed you didn’t really join the discussions back, I remember it was mostly the Spanish team that contributed back then. But let bygones be bygones, you’ve become one of my favorite posters here since then
Reminiscing on that by the way, I do see some parallels. Pimax essentially had promised us the 8kX from the beginning. And then they came up with the Pimax 5k/8k, devices that compared to the promised 8kX specs just had severe shortcomings. That’s why the Spanish Team gave the ‘red light’ for release, they just felt that the 5k/8K device didn’t really resemble what Pimax had promised (not 5k/8k specs, but 8kX were promised). If Pimax hadn’t hugely overpromised the specs, like always, then I’m sure the Spanish Team wouldn’t have given the red light. The 5k was not a bad device, it just didn’t live up to the promised 8kX specs. Although then we would have also missed those entertaining wars on the closed forums between sweviver and the Spanish team, lol.
Given that Pimax still haven’t released me from their NDA I STILL cannot fully explain my involvement at the time but it wasn’t as a hw tester. That’s why I didn’t chime in as much as the Spaniards and the rest.
I did end up using that 5K+ (absolutely correct dear @Heliosurge) for quite a while and actually had more fun with it than the 8KX years later.
But this is obviously all OffTopic, I just wanted to not see @SmallBaguette getting ripped to shreds here given his absence way back when.
Well I can’t speak for others. But my ‘hype’ for the Crystal is pretty low, way lower than back then for the 8kX. I’m somewhat hyped for the upcoming Apple headset but if they won’t even support Steam than that won’t be that interesting neither. Also the idea of the Deckard gets my hopes up, but well, we’ll see.
The 12k does feel like a cool device though but god knows how long this will take. Pretty safe to sure it won’t be out this year.
All Testers in the m1 gave the Red light on release. It was only at the Berlin Backer Meet to which only the 3 musketeers opted to going. The m2 impressed majority including the 3 testers. The 5k+ was unveiled. The release version omitted the proximity sensor.
The 5k was a nice device. But if you had the promised specs in mind, which I had and I think all spanish testers too, it was just disappointing. It’s just the ever lasting same with Pimax. If they had managed expectations, the 5k would have been awesome.
Pimax have already said as much themselves. They said CES next year is when the public will see the prototype, so I’m guessing a roadshow situation like the Crystal.
Also, testers are indeed under NDA. Not sure what detail I can go into on that etc, but figured I should set expectations appropriately. I’ll be reaching out to Pimax and seeing what all I can share but I guess don’t expect much at least initially but I will provide whatever insight I can.
I am REALLY excited to see the reveal of the Apple headset in June.
After all Apple generally know how to provide a good user experience, if you accept to be in a walled garden and are not keen on tweaking your settings all day long to squeeze the last extra punch out of the hardware. Just plug ‘n play.
Apart from the specs, which I expect to be good but not out of this world spectacular, it is the software, use case side I am really sort of hyped up but also deeply worried about. I would hope they show us how MR really can change the experience and give us a vision for the future, but some of the reports, including the hints at some Apple execs allegedly being slightly sceptical if it‘s not premature to release it could mean it could be pretty underwhelming, in particular for Apple‘s standards, and Tim Cook just feeling the pressure to release his own one more thing moment before the board replaces him for being too conservative (there were no big breakthroughs so far in terms of new products on his watch, right).
At least it should be very interesting as an event, but with uncertain result.
Apple likes to make gadgets as small as possible. They will even cut down the battery size to make the phone like 1mm slimmer. This will create a designer’s nightmare with MR headsets: it will require a lot of computational power to recognize the 3D space and all the objects around the user, yet at the same time it needs to be small enough to fit Apple’s design philosophy.
I wish they can really achieve the goal. Meanwhile it doesn’t matter to me, the price tag of $3000 is way out of my reach anyway.
Apple products can be great but they are often expensive. I doubt i’ll buy it if it’s ~$3000, no more than typical/average fov, and can’t be used with Steam games.
Not sure at all that I will consider buying it - but it‘s rumored to be this expensive b/c it‘s a devkit more than a true consumer product, and next years iteration wohld come at a significantly lower cost - and with more apps to use it with, thanks to this year‘s devkit release.
A lot of question marks, little certainty. But it seems most of the answers aren‘t that far away anymore.
It‘s more the anticipation of these answers which makes me excited - even if I wouldn‘t try to get this first version (may not be sold to Germany anyhow).
That they say the Wireless and Standalone mode will come later with an OTA update allways makes me “giggle” seeing you cannot make an Over The Air, in short OTA update without wireless or cellular capabilities
Sorry, just had to say it out loud, or write it actually
Just had a surreal encounter in the Pimax Discord - it’s quite heavily censored, it appears. Wasn’t really active on it before, but now I know why! Anyway, I left the server, so they get what their moderator wished for.
