Pimax 8K VR Frequent Asked Questions

Thanks, this is very important info, good to know. So we can cancel until the campaign ends. Hmm… that kinda sucks then if you’re pledging to something that SUPPOSEDLY is due for May. What do you do then when in July there’s still nothing ? You don’t have any options other than to wait ?

We haven’t got explicit confirmation, but I suspect that even if it can upscale, the X model won’t be able to connect with just one DP. Each port drives only one eye.

The default option is already lower resolution, what would make that not have artifacts over another lower resolution than native?

one bridge chip can support one 4K panel, two 4K panel need two bridge chip, that’s why 8K X need 2*DP1.4 (two chips). we do such comparative test base on our internal 4K plus headset prototype.

Agreed. But this shouldn’t matter in terms of performance as long as your card has 2 dp ports. In that case you could run the X version using upscaling from 1440p.

But how did you get it working without the chip ?

You didn’t understand clearly. the bridge has some limitation on driving two 4K panel simultaneously. but it’s sufficient to drive one 4K panel.

Does Steamvr currently support an HMD with 2 DP? I say it because it would not make sense a device that can not be used in almost any game today, I see more logical a future update that allows us to save money

On my CV1 with 3gb 1060 with bigscreen, I run max settings in the void environment without issues. So, its up to Pimax if they will let low end systems choose higher modes.

This is why I probably wont back their KS. We are right back to where we were a year ago with questions about capability.

I am actually very disappointed, because up until the FAQ got posted I was ready to back it.

I was sure this HMD would support native 4k from launch. Its why I asked them so many times about displayport. I wanted to avoid this problem of “what will be supported”?

Now we are back at square 1 with uncertainty.

SteamVR with our driver Could support 2 DP. Actually our first stage 8K prototypes use 2*HDMI drive two panels. they work well with all steamVR contents.

Quick Question, are we sure the 8K X backer will get an 8K in January? I wish they would post this on the kickstarter. I don’t want to wait till end of next year. I have no problem trading it back in for the X when it’s available.

FYI, I noticed they moved the dates from Dec to Jan (will they move again?)

Can we request a refund if they don’t ship by March?

Thanks!

thanks for the clarification :+1:, one more question, have we all misinterpreted something or the campaign will be launched today? someone yesterday said that on a Tuesday but … today is Tuesday :fearful:

Pacific time today, so within the next few hours I’d imagine.

we already work on 5K/8K version around 14 months. up to now, Hardware/Mechanics/Optics/Laser Tracking/SW Firmware validation is close to be locked down. So the headset itself is ready for tooling and mass production. the wands and basestation will come later on. then the 8K X version.

Hmm that doesn’t make any sense … You just said that for 2 4k panels you need two chips. So how do you drive 1 panel then ? You still need one chip. THanks.

we do the comparison test test base on 4K mode, not 8K mode. one bridge chip drive one 4K panel in our 4K headset.

Keeping it real:

If Kickstarting for the 8K X only nets you the non-8K X, Pimax does not have to honor the 8K X if they can’t get it functioning properly.

In short, Kickstarting is a gamble, you hope things go as planned but things can change not in your favor & all one would get is delays followed by apologies and eventually, even those may stop.

I get that. But the whole issue was that you guys don’t have a bridge chip to drive a 4k panel at native resolution. So how do you do it then ? I’m lost here.

According to Xunshu, The PiMax founder said there will definitely be an 8k x with 2 DP ports and 4k input. A Founder of a company would not risk a lie this big. His reputation and that of PiMax as a whole is at risk.
